Abstract

Tourist destination must have four components which include tourist attractions, good accessibility, availability of various facilities, such as accommodation, restaurants, shopping and other services and tourism organizations. This study specifically focuses on an emerging tourist destination named Tamansari Ciapus in the city of Bogor, West Java. It aims to examine the roles of a resort accommodation, located in the area, in supporting the new destination. The study also wants to look at the roles and potential of local village communities in developing community-based tourism destination. It uses descriptive qualitative method of data collection through surveys, field observations and interviews. This study reveals that the role of resort accommodation, in this case the Highland Park Hotel, is quite important in the development of Tamansari Ciapus as a new destinaton. In many case, the resort is the very reason the visitors come to the area. However, such a role is not yet optimum as there is not yet a cooperation between the resort, other attraction owners in the area (silk, mushroom cultivation, and other home industries) and also the local community. The resort guests, for instance, seldom visit areas outside the resort. The role of the community is also quite significant in developing the area as a village tourism destination. Community organizations has been formed and tour packages have been developed although the market is still limited. Other issues that need to be addressed includes the lack of tour guides, integrated souvenir centers and professionally-managed homestay.

Abstract

Sustainable tourism development guidelines and management practices are applicable to all forms of tourism in all types of destinations, and all types of tourism, whether it is ‘mass tourism’ or ‘niche tourism’. Sustainable ways of managing destinations can be defined by considering their competitive position and their stage in the destination life cycle in the interest of achieving sustainable tourism outcomes. This paper discusses factors that could ensure the sustainability of tourism and appropriate policy that needed to be implemented in order to prevent tourism from creating negative environmental and socio-cultural impacts in the respective tourist destinations. Within the discussion, reference is made to several tourism destinations. Towards the end of the paper, planning approaches that are needed to conserve the intrinsic qualities of selected tourism destination are suggested.

Abstract

The number of tourists to Bogor has been increasing in recent years. Competition among tourists’ destinations within the region cannot be avoided. To face the great competition, tourism destination requires a good marketing mix to attract tourists. This study, conducted in Taman Wisata Mekarsari, aims to investigate the impact of marketing mix on destination choice by travelers to Mekarsari. Researchers used the 7P's of marketing mix as the independent variable (pull factors) consisting product, price, place, promotion, people, process and physical evidence and 2 push factors, i.e. socio-demography and motivation. The dependent variable is the destination choice by tourists to visit Mekarsari. By using convenience sampling technique, 100 respondents were sampled in this study. Multiple regression analysis was performed to determine whether the marketing mix components influence the destination choice. The results show that the marketing mix component simultaneously affects the destination choice to Mekarsari. Product, process, physical evidence and promotion have a significant influence on the destination choice, while the remaining price, place and people do not have a significant influence. Among the socio-demographic factors only gender and occupation have discriminant function on the destination choice, whereas for the motivational factors only education motivation show discriminant function on the destination choice Taman Wisata Mekarsari. This study recommends the management of Taman Wisata Mekarsari to optimize products, promotion, process and physical evidence in an effort to increase the number of visits.
