Abstract

Fandom culture has emerged a new culture called fanfictions where fans create a fictional story based on the popular culture they like. An example of the most common cultures being made into fanfictions is K-pop. Nowadays, K-pop fanfictions can be seen almost everywhere, especially in digital platforms, like Wattpad and Twitter. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the motivations of the digital authors in writing fanfictions on Wattpad and Twitter through structuralist approach. After interviewing the authors and analyzing those interviews, the finding shows that the biggest motivation came from the love of K-pop culture itself, specifically idol culture as through writing fanfictions, they feel to have a special relation with the idols. Meanwhile, digital platforms here also have an important role in giving feedbacks to the author which also give them a boost of motivation.

Abstract

In trying to integrate science into the policy-making process, authorities and the public commonly overlook the essential role of literature in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. A close examination of the topic shows that it is more complex than the authorities’ commitment to science. “We follow the science” is a way of communicating rather than implementing. Since other articulations are excluded in the articulation of “we follow science,” cultural and critical studies become crucial. Arguably, literature communicates science better than the strategy adopted by the ruling elites.

Abstract

Gender basically gives distinction to males and females, where our public domain is inseparable from this social construction. This study aimed to identify the language use of the Middle Eastern freedom activists’ speeches based on gender perspective. The data source was from male and female Middle Eastern freedom activists’ speech videos. A number of participants were also involved to measure the powerful voice in the speech. The results showed that male and female speakers produced a set of spoken language differences, which differed by form, topic, content, and purpose. In using the language for speech, both male and female speakers produced some elements in random frequency. To conclude, one gender could not be considered more potential than the other to influence the audience when delivering the speech. Other factors, particularly non-verbal ones, exist to give impacts on the speech performance so that it has a certain degree to influence the audience.

Abstract

This research is aimed to prove that old literature helps the creation of modern literary works, such as providing inspiration, assisting authors in making themes, characterizations, motives, and so on. One of the modern literary works inspired by old literary works is the novel titled Sang Keris. Reading this 107 pages novel, we will feel a very thick Javanese nuance. By using the intertextual approach, this paper will focus on discussing the "novelty" contained in the novel Sang Keris, in the sense that "novelty " is a form of deviation, transformation, or rebellion against old literary works that existed far before. The results of this study prove that there are six novelties in the novel Sang Keris, in relation to old literary works. First, the novelty in the character of Patih Lokajaya. Second, the novelty in the Pulanggeni figure. Third, the novelty in the Lembu Peteng character. Fourth, the novelty in Larung Manah ritual. Fifth, the novelty in Raden Katong character. Abstract

Individuals produce speech to communicate that can lead to an action, which is referred to as a speech act. This study aimed to examine one type of speech act, the illocutionary act, as portrayed by the main character in the Split movie who suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder. The problems of this study covered: (1) the types of illocutionary acts found in the main character, (2) the perlocutionary effect related to illocutionary in the utterance produced by the main character, and (3) the reason for the main character of demonstrating the speech accommodation when he acts like an adult or kid to the addressee. The method used to conduct this study was a qualitative approach using document analysis. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the theory of the illocutionary act proposed by Searle (1976), the perlocutionary act by Austin (1962), and communication accommodation by Holmes (2013). The results showed that the main character demonstrated five types of illocutionary acts. In this movie, the perlocutionary effect was the listener’s action that the speaker wanted, or it might be unexpected. Besides, most of the accommodation used by the main character was speech convergence.

Abstract

Individual actions will usually be motivated by a symbolic structure in accordance with the society in where the subject lives. This makes certain individuals and their behavior never be liberated from the symbolic order appliedin their society. In other words, these individuals can never be authentic because all actions must be under the control of appropriate laws and regulations. This certainly controls the pattern of life sincethe individual’s mindset is subject to the ideology that hegemonies them. In the Zizekian perspective, the subject is always in a lacking condition in their symbolic order, so that they continue to desire the Real. When their desire for the Real is fulfilled through concrete actions that go beyond symbolic laws, authentic subjectivity is formed. This studyanalyzed two main problems: (1) the actions or behavior of the main female characters (Anne and Mary) which were assumed to be radical behavior, and (2) a comparison of the chances to become a radical subject in “The Other Boleyn Girl” novel by using the concept of a radical subject proposed by Zizek.

Abstract

Iksaka Banu’s “Di Ujung Belati is a short story set in the colonial era. The social class system established by the Dutch government at that time makes the natives difficult to speak in various spheres of life. In this study, the short story was discussed using the perspective of subalternity introduced by Spivak. The method used was the literature review method. Based on the discussion, it can be seen that the Dutch put the natives in a subaltern position in terms of gender, economy, and culture. The oppression perceived by the subaltern gives rise to resistance in the form of rebellion and betrayal towards the Dutch government. That rebellion and betrayal is the way the subaltern speaks. Even though they have succeeded in overthrowing the Dutch, the natives are under the domination of another Western power, which is Britain. This shows that the natives are not completely successful in fighting Western hegemony. In relation to the current context of globalization, “Di Ujung Belati” short story can be a form of raising public awareness of the existence of neocolonialism after colonialism is abolished.
