Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic is arguably the most severe pandemic of the last century and has completely transformed how people go about their lives. With a high infection rate and no known cure yet, different countries have had to adopt extraordinary measures to curtail the spread of the virus. In particular, multiple countries have imposed lockdowns. The lockdowns have inadvertently interfered with human rights previously enjoyed by people, such as freedom of movement and the right to food, water and sanitation. We conducted an exploratory, non-systemic review of peer-reviewed journal articles, published between 2015 and 2020. The explored databases included: Ebscohost, Google Scholar, Wiley, JAMA, Elsevier, Oxford, CDC and Medline/PubMed.Our review of the literature highlighted the importance of states adopting a human-rights-centric approach in their responses to the Covid-19 pandemic. Three main thematic dimensions of various nations’ responses to the Covid-19 were constructed to represent this review. The three are human rights, gender inequality and social stigma. Some of the reactions to the Covid-19 pandemic have brought about the infringement of human rights. While some of the measures are justified, there is a need to ensure that human rights are protected to prevent states of the world abusing executive orders and emergency powers. This need set aside, crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, usually affect men and women differently. Such crises may even exacerbate the existing gender inequalities in society. Therefore, this calls for governments to devise measures to protect vulnerable populations such as women and children during the pandemic.

Abstract

Since the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, announced the first positive case of COVID-19 in Indonesia, the government officially created the COVID-19 Handling Task Force on March 4, 2020. The government has appointed Achmad Yurianto as the Spokesperson for the COVID-19 Handling Task Force. As a spokesperson, Achmad Yurianto conveyed the development of the status issue through the media. However, information ambiguity still arises, creating discretion and negative images of the government’s communication style. This research aims to describe how Kompas.com, Republika.co.id, and Detik.com, pioneers of online journalism in Indonesia, framed the news delivered by Achmad Yurianto. In this constructivist paradigm research, the researchers analyzed 28 news samples using the framing model of Pan and Kosicki, then related them to the theory of Social Reality Construction from Berger and Luckmann.  At the syntactic structure, the researcher analyzes the facts on the news scheme in the form of headlines, leads, background information, quotes, sources, statements, closings. At the script level, the researcher analyzes the completeness of the news which includes elements of 5W+1H. Furthermore, at the thematic level, the elements of pre-paragraphs and news prepositions. Finally, the researcher looks at the emphasis on facts through grammar, idioms, pictures, graphics in the news. The results disclosed that Kompas.com, Republika.co.id, and Detik.com actively reports the development of information about COVID-19 in Indonesia, including framing the COVID-19 Task Force Handling Spokesperson, Achmad Yurianto. Kompas.com could direct public opinion to see Achmad Yurianto as an arrogant and authoritarian person. Conversely, Detik.com always framed him as a competent and proportionate person in conveying information.

Abstract

Since COVID-19 is a global epidemic that threatens the safety of mankind, reducing the risk of transmitting the virus is an important issue in the implementation of elections in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to describe the impact of the use of social and mass media on the implementation of elections. This research was conducted in Malang Regency using a qualitative descriptive approach. Data collection was carried out through limited interviews, observation, and document analysis gathered from books, journals, and election documents. The results of the study show that (1) election information and campaigns are mostly done through social and mass media; (2) most of the public can receive information and campaign issues conveyed through the mass media; (3) elections can run well and smoothly. These findings indicate that the use of social and mass media for socialization and campaigning during a pandemic is quite effective. This finding is very important to reduce the spread of COVID-19, as well as to encourage the implementation of a more modern election.

Abstract

This study examined the continued relevance of Magic Bullet Theory, also called Hypodermic Needle Theory. It adopted the applied and survey research methods. The sample had 1,265 respondents. Qualitative analytical approach was used to discuss how the Magic Bullet Theory has remained a relevant interpretative tool for assessing the behaviour of media audiences during election period. Theoretical framework was anchored on Tichenor, Donohue and Olien’s Knowledge Gap Theory. The paper argued that the impactful use of media propaganda (particularly fake news on social media) during Nigeria’s 2019 elections has demonstrated the continued relevance of the theory in media studies, especially as it was observed that members of the main competing parties and aides of election contestants used fake news on social media to influence voters’ electoral judgments. Internet-based rumours of President Muhammadu Buhari’s demise and his “Islamisation” agenda, for instance, created such great concern that his party, the All Progressive Congress, exerted much efforts during its campaigns to debunk these allegations. Findings from the study led to the conclusion that media content substantially influenced the voters’ choice on who to support; and this vividly showed in the party’s dismal electoral performance in the Christian-dominated South-East, South-South and North-Central geo-political zones.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has drastically disrupted all business sectors in Indonesia such as the arts, cultural, and entertainment industries. This circumstance necessitated the conversion of numerous conventional movie theatres and online streaming providers. This scientific article examined the impact of the pandemic on the entertainment industry, specifically theatres of XXI and CGV and movie streaming; Disney+Hotstar and Netflix.  The qualitative method was used to develop this research. The dataset was taken from the survey taken from McKinsey Company website in 2020 and articles. The authors conducted an analysis of the changes based on two theories; New Media from  Martin Lister, Jon Dovey, Seth Giddings and Kieran Kelly and Uses and Gratification Theory from Katz, Blumler, and Gurevitch. The research findings demonstrate that internet streaming services can meet the entertainment needs of lonely individuals at home and result in a paradigm shift away from the belief that new films are only released in theatres.

This research seeks to provide answers to cultural shock events that arise from a process of cross-cultural communication. The data were obtained by conducting an in-depth interview process and then processed optimally using the Speech Codes Theory (SCT) initiated by Gerry Philipsen. This study shows that Indonesian students tend to cope with cultural shock events from cross-cultural communication processes when mingling with other community members.
