Abstract

A Real Durwan is a short story collection by Jhumpa Lahiri. The story chronicles Boori Ma, a sixty-four-year-old woman who works as Durwan, the gatekeeper and sweeper in an old building. She is a refugee from the 1947 Partition between India and Pakistan. It also portrays the condition of a woman who is ‘naturally’ considered a second-class citizen in a patriarchal society. This paper uses qualitative research method to support the analysis. Gayatri Spivak, a prominent scholar, and critic in Postcolonial studies, describes the woman as a subaltern. The subaltern refers to a person who is excluded and silenced in society. Spivak concludes that subalterns cannot speak because of repressive power and domination. Boori Ma is the portrayal of a subaltern woman. She is the main female character who experiences quadruple discrimination in relation to her gender, age, capital, and identity. Ultimately, she remains voiceless and has no choice but to leave her house due to hatred and defamation from an elite group. This paper is expected to examine four categories of discrimination: socioeconomic, ageism, gender, ethnic, and culture, and its relation to injustice towards a subaltern woman. In conclusion, it is proved that the subaltern cannot speak due to the never-ending discrimination.

Abstract

Based on observations made in one of many existing senior high specialized government schools specifically in SMAN 20 Batam where English is a compulsory subject, the writer found that speaking motivation and confidence is still lacking, as well as a lack of technology exploration. By combining technology and face-to-face instruction, the method of blended learning (BL) used in this study utilizes Classroom Action Research (CAR) method. In addition to the pre-test and scoring rubric of the CAR cycle, Live Worksheet is provided as a breakthrough to solve the shortcoming by executing the online interactive platform as a post-test (final evaluation). As a result, of the Live Worksheet implementation of the blended learning CAR method, 90% of students of a representative 10th senior grade class have increased their speaking motivation and confidence, with 3 out of 5 speaking skill elements such as grammar structures, fluency, and pronunciation showing improvement skyrocketed to 80 points, contrast to the low pre-test result of 60 points for each element.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to ascertain the impact of the RAP reading strategy on the academic progress of pupils in vocabulary and reading comprehension. The sample for this study comprised 45 pupils (22 females and 23 males) from Sriwijaya State Polytechnic who were in their second semester during the 2022-2023 academic year. This research was conducted using a quasi-experimental approach. The study employed a vocabulary test, a reading comprehension test, and the RAP reading strategy. The data analysis used mean, standard deviation, standard error mean, and t-tests for both the vocabulary test and the reading comprehension achievement test. The statistical significance level was set at .05. The study demonstrated that there were significant differences in reading comprehension achievement and vocabulary mastery between the experimental group and the control group. However, the RAP reading strategy was found to be more effective in enhancing reading comprehension achievement and vocabulary mastery than the traditional reading strategy. Overall, the RAP reading strategy can be a valuable tool for improving students' vocabulary and reading comprehension.
