SULUK: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, dan Budaya is a half-yearly journal published by the literary studies program of Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Ampel Surabaya. Suluk provides a forum for the scholar of literary studies, with special reference to linguistics, literature, and culture. The journal publishes articles on literature, language, philology, and culture of Indonesia with a special interest in the study of literature/language from different geographical areas such as Arabic, Indonesian, Javanese, etc. Suluk is accredited by Crossref, Google Scholar, Garuda, Indonesia Onesearch, Dimensions, Microsoft Academic, Index Copernicus International, Research Bible, and ROAD. Suluk uses the Open Journal System and email. It is a double-blind peer-reviewed by the international and national reviewers. This journal is an open-access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. Abstract

This study aims to describe the process of Islamization of Gresik in the 14th century brought by Shaykh Maulana Malik Ibrahim and recorded in the Babad Gresik I. This study uses the qualitative research method based on the study of literature of Babad Gresik I manuscript which has been in the form of Indonesian translation book written by Soekarman (1990). The results of this study are (1) The profile of Shaykh Maulana Malik Ibrahim, including: (a) The arrival of Shaykh Maulana Malik Ibrahim in Gresik region recorded in Babad Gresik I and (b) The death of Shaykh Maulana Malik Ibrahim recorded in Babad Gresik I as well as (2) The methods of da'wah conducted by Shaykh Maulana Malik Ibrahim in the process of Islamization of Gresik in the 14th century including two methods, namely: (a) Da'wah methods through the trade/commerce routes recorded in Babad Gresik I and (2) Da'wah methods through education Islamic boarding schools recorded in Babad Gresik I. Overall, it can be seen that there were some contributions of Syaykh Maulana Malik Ibrahim in the process of Islamization in the 14th century in Gresik that was recorded in Babad Gresik I.

Abstract

The story of Ramayana has been deeply rooted in the community and is a material for literary studies that has never completed for discussion. In Java the epic, Ramayana first fully appeared in the form of a relief at the Lara Jonggrang Temple which was built around the year 782 to 872.The other emergence about the Ramayana story was in the composition which was in the form ofRamayana kakawin in Old Javanese. The Ramayana story begins with a blessing and a preface including a summary of the story which then contains verses of poetry. This study aims to convey the social messages contained in the Ramayana story to the public. This study uses qualitative research method based on the study of literature in the book of P. Lal (1981) which has been translated into Indonesian. The results of this study are (1) Explaining the social messages contained in the Ramayana story, (2) Explaining the exemplary wisdom of the character Rama, (3) Explaining the exemplary loyalty of the character Sita, (4) Explaining the example of Rahwana's character in the form of perseverance and sincerity in loving Sit, (5) Explaining ibrah (lessons) from the Ramayana story so that it can be used as the life learning. Overall, it can be understood that in the Ramayana there are many social messages that can be used as the exemplary life.

Abstract

Oral stories in the form of legend which spread in Mojokerto, is one form of oral literature which is inherited from generation to generation. The study of the Legend of Kolam Petirtaan in Mojokerto includes three objects, namely: (1) Kolam Segaran, (2) Kolam Candi Tikus, (3) Kolam Candi Jalatunda. This study aims to find (1) the structure of the Legend of Kolam Petirtaan; Kolam Candi Tikus; and Kolam Candi Jalatunda, (2) the social function of the Legend of Kolam Segaran; Kolam Candi Tikus; and Kolam Candi Jalatunda, and (3) the public trust towards the Legend of Kolam Segaran; Kolam Candi Tikus; and Kolam Candi Jalatunda. This study uses qualitative research methods based on literature and field data. Field data were obtained from data sources in Trowulan Village, Trowulan District, Mojokerto Regency and Seloliman Village, Trawas District, Mojokerto Regency. The location is a legacy of the kingdom of Majapahit and the Kingdom of Kahuripan. Data collection of this study was obtained through observation techniques, interviews, recording, writing, documentation, and transcription. Overall, it can be seen that, the Legend of Kolam Segaran; Kolam Candi Tikus; and Kolam Candi Jalatunda has the structure, social function and valuable public trust and are still trusted by the local community.

Abstract

Kakawin Arjunawiwaha is the first milestone of literature in East Java, in which there is a perfection of life as explained in other stories of wayang. Arjuna as the most handsome puppet play is an ideal illustration of Javanese culture about the image of a knight. This study aims to find out the story of Kakawin Arjuna Wiwaha in the Javanese puppet play of Arjuna Wiwaha. This study uses a qualitative research method based on a literature review of Kakawin Arjuna Wiwaha Wiryamartana (1987) which has been translated into Indonesian. The results of the study include: (1) Describing the story of Kakawin Arjuna Wiwaha in the Javanese puppet story Arjuna Wiwaha, (2) The characters in Kakawin Arjuna Wiwaha used in Javanese puppets of Kakawin Arjuna Wiwaha, (3) The response of the Javanese community towards Javanese puppets Arjuna Wiwaha adapted from the story of Kakawin Arjuna Wiwaha, especially on the characteristics of Arjuna as a person who is knighted, powerful and exemplary. Overall, it can be seen that there is a connection between the story of Kakawin Arjuna Wiwaha and the Javanese puppet play of Arjuna Wiwaha.

Abstract

Kitab Musarar is one of the famous works of Syaikh Subakir described the condition of Java both before and after the arrival of Syaikh Subakir in the 13th century in Java on the mission of Islamization. This study uses a qualitative research method based on the Kitab Musarar which has been rewritten in an old spelling Indonesian translation printed book titled Kitab Musarar Syaikh Subakir-Asal Muasal Tanah Jawa karya Sukri (2011) and the book of Melacak Jejak Syaikh Subakir: Riwayat Penumbalan Tanah Jawa dan Walisanga Generasi Pertama written by Romadhon (2017). The results of this study are: (1) The existence of the early history of the world until the entry of Islam in Java in the 13th century in the Kitab Musarar by Syaikh Subakir, (2) The existence of figures who played a role of rukyat in Java in the 13th century based on the Kitab Musarar by Syaikh Subakir, and (3) The story of sangsara era and Ratu Adil profil in the Kitab Musarar by Syaikh Subakir. Overall, it can be seen that there are traces of Javanese Islamization brought by Syaikh Subakir in the 13th century based on the Kitab Musarar.

Abstract

Raden Jaka Prabangkara was the son of Brawijaya V, the last king of the Majapahit Kingdom. He was the king's son of an ordinary woman or concubine. During the reign of his father, which was around the 15th century, Raden Jaka Prabangkara had the role as a village chief in Sungging area. Besides, he was also given the task to become a palace painter because of his expertise in painting. This study aims to describe the traces of Raden Jaka Prabangkara's life during the reign of Majapahit Kingdom in the 15th century and the lessons that can be learned from the stories in Babad Jaka Tingkir. This study uses qualitative research method based on the literature review in the book of Babad Jaka Tingkir: Babad Pajang written by Sastronaryatmo (2011) which has been translated into Indonesian. The results of this study are (1) The background story of the birth of Raden Jaka Prabangkara in Babad Jaka Tingkir, (2) The role of Raden Jaka Prabangkara in the 15th century during the reign of Majapahit Kingdom in Babad Jaka Tingkir, (3) The chronology of the seclusion of Raden Jaka Prabangkara to China in Babad Jaka Tingkir, (4) The wisdom that can be learned from Raden Jaka Prabangkara's life. Overall, it can be seen that there are traces of Raden Jaka Prabangkara's life journey during the reign of Majapahit kingdom in 15th century based on the book of Babad Jaka Tingkir.

Abstract

Babad Trunajaya-Surapati tells about the life journey of a character named Untung, a child who came from Bali. This study aims to determine the role of Untung Surapati in Mataram based on Babad Trunajaya-Surapati. This study uses qualitative method based on the main literature of which has been rewritten in Indonesian as well as the delicate Javanese language written by Sudibjo Z. H. and translated by Soeparmo (2011). The results of this study are (1) The story of Untung Surapati, (2) The background of the arrival of Untung Surapati to Mataram, and (3) The role of Untung Surapati in Mataram based on Babad Trunajaya-Surapati. Overall, it can be seen that the role of Untung Surapati in the Mataram was recorded in Babad Trunajaya-Surapati.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the identity that emerges through language in Indonesian language major in tertiary engineering concentration. The research was conducted in the Department of Marine Engineering, Sepuluh November Institute of Technology Surabaya. The method used is descriptive qualitative with Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis. Van Dijk's three models are macrostructure, social cognition, and microstructure. The results of the study show that identity does not only emerge from a person's psychological background but is also seen from the language used. most students try to use mimicry in using language, that is, students outside Surabaya try to use Suroboyoan as the language of instruction in discussions in the Indonesian class as an effort to bring out their identity as suroboyo architects, no longer their origin areas to be socially acceptable. Other findings, Indonesian language classes bring up the identity associated with the understanding adopted by students.

Abstract

This study aims to determine (1) typology of the tomb of Sunan Ampel and (2) tombstone ornaments on the tomb of X in the tomb complex of Sunan Ampel. This study uses qualitative research methods through techniques (1) observation, (2) interviews, (3) and literature studies. Those data obtained are analyzed using archeological theory and the approach to artistic values. The results of this study are (1) typology of the tomb of Sunan Ampel, consisting of three elements: (a) sepulchre; (b) tombstone; and (b) the grave cupola, while (2) the tombstone ornaments on the tomb of X in the Sunan Ampel tomb complex are: (a) curly motifs, (b) vine decorations, and (c) stump decorations. Overall, it can be seen that the tomb complex of Sunan Ampel has the typology of tombs and tombstone ornaments that have characteristics and meanings in it.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the potential of the Syuhada Mosque as a cultural heritage building in Yogyakarta. This study uses a qualitative research method based on a literature review on the History of the Syuhada Mosque by Kumoro (2019), Constitution Number 11 of 2010 concerning Cultural Heritage and Regional Regulations of the Special Province of Yogyakarta, especially Number 6 of 2012 concerning Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Cultural Heritage. The results of this study are (1) The history of the construction of the Mosque of Syuhada in 1950-1952 is closely related to the location and history of the struggle of Indonesia in maintaining independence after the relocation of the capital to Yogyakarta, (2) The Syuhada Mosque has the potential to be a cultural heritage building in Yogyakarta because it is in accordance with the contents of (a) Constitution Number 11 of 2010 concerning Cultural Heritage: Article 1 (number 1), Article 1 (number 3), Article 1 (number 18), and Article 5 and (b) Regional Regulation of the Special Province of Yogyakarta Number 6 of 2012 concerning Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Cultural Heritage: Article 12. Overall, it can be seen that the establishment of the Syuhada Mosque building in Yogyakarta Mayor Decree Number 297 of 2019 related to the Cultural Heritage of the City of Yogyakarta means that the status of the Syuhada Mosque as a list of the Cultural Heritage of the Special Region of Yogyakarta deserves to be upgraded to the Cultural Heritage Building.
