This study investigates the existence aspect of Sikh followers in Jabodetabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi) regions. It aims to provide data and information regarding the government services to all religious communities including minorities, such as Sikh. The existence aspects under study include the short history, the basic teachings, rituals, institutions, and social interaction. This study utilizes qualitative research using postcolonial and subaltern perspective from Gayatri C Spivak’s view. Theologically, Sikh believes in monotheism that was mentioned by Waheguru and Guru Nanank (1469-1539). Sikh has a holy book named Guru Granth Sahib. Sikh temple is called Gurdwara or the “gateway to the Guru”. Sikh followers came to Indonesia from Amritsar, Punjab, India, (now Pakistan territory) through Aceh, North Sumatra and Jakarta. Sikh followers are managed under the Hindu Guidance Directorate. They do not have a national organization that accommodates Sikh community in Indonesia. It can be concluded that the existence of the Sikh in Jabodetabek area is somewhat subaltern.

Abstract

Tasharruful Fatihah is one of religious rituals growing in Nahdatul Ulama (NU) surroundings at Bantul regency as a means of devotion, worship, and reverence to Allah the Almighty. This ritual recites al-Fatihah as the primary reading. This ritual procession is barely seen as a symbol of belief that it is a different method to be closer to the Almighty. The series of this ritual becomes one encouraging source for a worship movement towards Allah. This study recommends that Tasharruful Fatihah initiated by some NU leaders is an attempt of dialoguing Islam with the local culture as an inseparable unity. Nevertheless, there are fundamental differences in the source of Islamic teachings versus the source of social traditions.

Abstract

UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta is an institution representing Islam as values, religion, ideology, rituals, and symbols. With these characters, Islamic political parties gain a high sympathy in this institution. Having approximately 25,000 students, 1000 academic and administrative staffs, UIN should have been a mass basis for Islamic political parties. Despite the assumption that Islamic community is a potential vote raiser for Islamic political parties, the parties were not significantly considered by the UIN Jakarta academicians. This study focuses on the students’ acceptance on political parties by their party affiliations. 450 respondents were questioned on this matter and 51,1% of them stated that they are not affiliated or a part of Islamic political parties (while the 48,9% stated that they are). Only 42% of respondents (140 students) are affiliated to Islamic parties, while 58% are not.

Abstract

The Indonesian fiqh schools in Indonesia become unique as it relies on the national cultures as the colors of fiqh. Diverse cultural factors and the vast number of Muslim population around 80% out of 235 millions of the population account for the Indonesian fiqh to be considered among the Islamic fiqh schools. Some fiqh innovations were produced due to legal collaboration between fiqh legal and Indonesian culture. The development of fiqh schools has been clearly demonstrated in the Sabilul Muhtadin book, a work of Muhammad Arsyad al-Banjari (1710-1812 AD), which continues today in the hands of Gus Dur, Ali Yafie, and others. Harmonious collaboration between Indonesian customs and Islam becomes a positive and progressive synergy in developing.

Abstract

Religious broadcasting remains one of the most crucial topics in inter-religious relationship. When Islamic dawah and Christian missionary share the same fields, a potential conflict and competition occurs. Indonesian government regulates this issue by issuing The Joint Decree of the Minister of Religious Affairs and the Minister of Home Affairs No.1 year 1979 on the Procedures of Religious Propagation and Foreign Aids to Religious-based Organization in Indonesia. This decree, which was regarded as outdated by some parties, is facing the challenges of the more dynamic society. Thus, it needs some updates or revisions for the decree. This study attempts to explore the implementation of this joint decree by collecting the responses from the society. By employing literature review, interviews, and observations, this study takes form of descriptive analytical method. It is found that there are no more religious conversion tricks by offering incentives such as: money, gifts, or clothing in Makassar. Meanwhile, foreign aids or facilities are not detected and recorded by the local authorities therefore they are out of control.

Abstract

The accusation against the authenticity of tasawuf (Islamic mysticism or Sufism) teachings still lingers on in this contemporary era. This article contributes on answering this accusation by revisiting the nature and the origin of tasawuf. By examining the history of tasawuf, this article argues that the accusation is not true and cannot be proven. Though there is some evidence that external influence occurs, this only touches the surface (in the form of zuhud movement) not in the essence of the Sufism teaching. Therefore it can be concluded that Sufism is authentically Islamic teaching originally from Quran and hadiths, thus it is not transferred to Islam.
