Abstract

Character education is the main basis for complete human development. For the Indonesian people, character education is a manifestation of the nation's conscience that must be understood through the existence of daily life experiences. In the repertoire of Javanese literature there is a genre of piwulang literature that was born because of the practical need for character education in the Javanese court environment in the 19th century. The values of character education that were built at that time continue to be embedded in the life of the Javanese people to this day. This fact would be a strong reason for the effort to reformulate piwulang literature as a new alternative model of character education in Indonesia. The approach used in this research is a text phenomenological approach with van Dijk's theory of critical discourse analysis about discourse and its social cognition relations. From the results of a study of piwulang literary texts, it is concluded that the syntactic structure of didactic texts leads to strengthening the sense of taste which in Javanese terms is referred to as "rasa sejati". The essence of taste values include: bekti (respect), tresna (love), and andhap asor (polite). The teaching formulation is in the knowledge of things related to ala-becik, adat-waton, and manners. These three are the essence of character education that is very relevant to be applied today. Keywords: Character education; Serat Wulangreh; critical discourse

Abstract

This research discusses how the Javanese novelist, Ardini Pangastuti, uses her work Lakon to inculcate and reinvigorate wayang in the young generation. In this work, the pragmatic perspective is applied based on linguistic concepts. The pragmatic point of view assumes that the language (form of speech, literary work) is an expression that suggests the speaker's intentions and the context of the speech. Meanwhile, qualitative data analysis was carried out utilizing interpretation-interactive and inductive methods. All of the results are provided in a verbal-descriptive style. The following are the study's findings. First, Lakon expresses a strong deliberate interaction (intention) between the author and the novel's characters in instilling and reviving wayang to the young generation. Second, the Lakon novel does not transform wayang characters into characters so that the novel tends to be reportative due to the dominant description of wayang stories obtained from observations and interviews. Third, the author and novel's characters succeeded in instilling and reviving wayang in the young generation through the narrative structure by combining traditional concepts with modern tools, includding technical innovations in performances, communicative language, and wayang performing management, despite the fact that these methods are common in the context of wayang development. Keywords: a novel; wayang; Ardini Pangastuti; pragmatic; young generation

Abstract

Serat Baron Sakendher (SBS) is one of the classic Javanese works that narrates the relationship between the Javanese and the Belanda. The SBS script was written in the post-Java war of 1830, when the south-central part of Java was politically completely controlled by the Belanda. The kings and aristocrats in the four Javanese palaces were very submissive to the authority of the VOC as well as being an extension of the power to suppress and explore the population. SBS became the legitimacy of the Javanese king's power over his people as well as the history of the presence of white people. SBS was written by Ngabei Yudasara and later developed by Carik Sasanapustaka. In four Javanese courts, the SBS script was rewritten by different authors during the reign of the same king and duke. Until now, through catalog searches, 21 SBS scripts were found with different panedhak and in different years. It is narrated that at first the presence of Baron Sakendher (BS) to Java was to trade and expand the territory. But when he arrived in the Mataram area, he lost to Panembahan Senopati, the first Mataram King. Finally, BS and his brother made up their mind to serve the Javanese rulers by changing their form into subtle creatures who served and protected the King of Mataram. This narrative reverses with the orientalism narrative which is echoed by the west against the east. West as the ocean and east as the other. Javanese poets view the presence of westerners on the contrary from the discourse of orientalism. West was seen by Javanese poets as someone who came to serve the Javanese rulers.
