Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the errors made and to describe the causes of errors in students with field-dependent and field-independent cognitive styles in solving social arithmetic problems based on Newman's error analysis method. The subjects of this study were 3 subjects taken from class VII SMP Negeri 4 Kuala Tungkal, where 1 student had a field-independent cognitive style and 2 students had a field-dependent cognitive style. The instruments in this study were GEFT test question sheets, social arithmetic question sheets, and interview guidelines. The results of the study showed that there were errors made by subjects with field-independent cognitive style based on Newman's error analysis. Transformation error, where the subject does not write the approach model or mathematical arithmetic operation model on the given task sheet. Process skill errors and conclusions writing errors. The 2 subjects with field-dependent cognitive style also met several indicators of Newman's error in solving social arithmetic problems. Misunderstood the problem, transformation error, skill error and conclusion writing error. The causes of errors made by subjects with field-independent and field-dependent cognitive styles are almost the same, namely being less thorough, not knowing the steps used to solve problems, rushing in solving problems, and students' habits in solving story problems, for example students not writing conclusions.

Abstract

Misconceptions are misunderstandings of concepts that students have that conflict with concepts that have been agreed upon by experts, misunderstandings of this concept can occur due to the learning methods used in this Covid-19 era, namely limited online and face-to-face methods. The limited interaction between teachers and students can lead to misconceptions, where the concepts given by the teacher and those received by students can have different meanings. Differences in the cognitive style of students in working on math problems can also be the cause of students experiencing misconceptions. The purpose of this study was to identify the misconceptions that occur in students who are cognitively impulsive and reflective in solving math problems. The type of research used is qualitative research, which uses a descriptive research methodology. The research subjects were students of class XII MIPA 2 SMAN 3 Jambi City. The data collection methods used in this study were tests and interviews, where the test consisted of MFFT (Matching Familiar Figures Test) to classify students' cognitive styles, after which two people were selected from impulsive and reflective cognitive styles. Furthermore, the selected students were given a test about the distribution of material and the binomial probability function, as well as interviews with students. The results showed that impulsive students were identified as having misconceptions of translation, systematic, concepts and signs. Meanwhile, reflective students were identified as having misconceptions of strategies, concepts, signs and systematics. The cause of the misconceptions experienced by students is the lack of preconceptions that students have so that in understanding new concepts students become wrong and also students are still in a hurry to solve problems. The results of this study also show the types of misconceptions that occur in all subjects, both impulsive and reflective, namely conceptual misconceptions.

Abstract

Percentage is one of the basic mathematical material that often appears in human life. Especially in the economic and educational aspects, the word percent is often associated with finance. So, as early as possible students should understand the meaning of percentages in mathematics lessons. This strong understanding of the material will encourage students to be able to solve percent problems in mathematics. However, in reality, student learning outcomes at SD Negeri 117 Palembang are relatively low because more than 50% of students get scores below the KKM. One of the causes is the students' lack of understanding of the percent material and the less effective learning process. The learning process using the PMRI approach is one method to bridge the problems of the conventional teaching and learning process. This study used a pre-experimental design method which was carried out on 40 fifth grade students at SD Negeri 117 Palembang. The data used in this study is using the results of students' ability tests pre-test (before being treated) and post-test (after being given treatment). The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was an effect of learning outcomes in SD Negeri 117 using the PMRI approach. The results showed that there was an effect of student learning outcomes using the PMRI approach on the percent material. Based on the results of statistical testing using SPSS that the value of tcount > ttable  value, where the value of t count is 10,673 and t table is 2,306. Student learning outcomes also increased, namely by 85% of students getting scores above the KKM.

Abstract

This research is motivated because students' ability to master mathematical concepts cannot be measured only from student learning outcomes, but in students' thinking processes in solving problems. One way can be analyzed through solving math problems. Because, in solving problems it is impossible for students' minds to be exactly the same as other students because each individual has a different thinking style, these differences can be expressed through cognitive styles. The thinking process indicators used in this study are 1) understanding formation 2) opinion formation 3) decision formation 4) drawing conclusions. This type of research is a descriptive qualitative research that aims to describe the thinking process of Field Independent (FI)-Field Dependent (FD) students in solving math problems. This research was conducted in class XII MIPA SMA N 3 Jambi city in the even semester of the 2021/2022 academic year. The method used for data collection in this study is the method of tests and interviews. The main instrument in this study was the researcher himself and other instruments, namely the GEFT test, math test question sheets, and interview guidelines. The results of this study indicate that: 1) Students with the FI cognitive style fulfill all stages of the thinking process well in solving math problems and can develop their own structure on different questions. 2) Students with FD cognitive style can only fulfill the stages of opinion formation and decision formation for questions that have been done frequently and have difficulty solving different questions from before. That way, teachers need to adapt learning to students' cognitive styles and need to train students with questions that improve students' thinking processes.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the difficulties of seventh grade students in junior high school in mathematical critical thinking when solving line and angle problems. The subjects used in this study were 28 students of class VII.2 in one of the junior high schools in Bekasi City. To measure students' critical thinking skills, researchers used a description test instrument as many as 4 questions. This article is studied descriptively with a qualitative method. Aspects of critical thinking skills are measured based on how students are able to (1) interpret conjectures (2) evaluate, (3) solve problems, and (4) conclude. Technical data analysis includes data collection, data presentation, data reduction, and drawing conclusions. The calculation results show that students' critical thinking skills on the interpretation indicator get a percentage of 70.54% in the good category, the analysis gets a percentage of 68.75% in the good category, the evaluation gets a percentage of 26.48% with the less category, and inference gets a percentage of 40.48 % with sufficient category. These results show that the factors causing the difficulty experienced are thought to be because students do not understand simple concepts, are unable to translate questions into mathematical sentences, do not know the meaning of the problems presented as work steps.
