Abstract

TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) is widely used to measure one’s ability in English. In fact, learning TOEFL is always by answering questions. Whatever the subjects (listening, structure, error analysis or reading), students will be faced on a lot of questions. In many cases, students were tired and bored of answering questions. They even did not comprehend the subjects. To solve that problem, applying question-making task can be a solution. This study explained how the task improved students’ comprehension on TOEFL subjects. Furthermore, the task would build students’ motivation to involve in teaching-learning process. This study was also focused on exploring the result of applying question-making task as a TOEFL teaching tool. The aim of this study is to introduce TOEFL teaching technique that could enable students to comprehend TOEFL subjects. In addition, by making their own questions would motivate them to be involved in learning process.

Abstract

This study aims to know the student’s ability in writing narrative text in terms of content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics mastery at the eightth grade of SMP Negeri  2 Tambangan and to know why the students’ ability in writing narrative text in terms of content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics mastery are low at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Tambangan. The research was conducted by using mix method(quantitative and qualitative research) with 9 students as the informants. The documentation and interview were used in collecting the data. Based on data analysis, it could be found (a)the result of the from their ability in writing narrative text in terms of content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics still below the criteria minimum (KKM). The average all of the participants just on average 65 while the KKM value demanded that they must except to get the score on the average of criteria minimum at 75. and b) The result of the data finding showed that most of the students are unable in writing narrative text includes in content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. It is proved from their score n writing narrative text are still below the KKM.  and c)Based on the writer’s interview to the 9 informants, most of students  think writing is difficult skill for them because they have limited understanding in vocabulary, grammar and tenses mastery.

Abstract

This study attempted to describe an analysis of phonology in Minangkabau Language. The purpose of the study was to describe the phonology in Minangkabau Language, types and distribution of diphthong and consonants and phonology form on the oral text of speakers in Padang and other regions such as Padang Panjang, Bukit Tinggi, and Sawah Lunto. The method of this study was library research by selecting and collecting some materials which were relevant to the subject matter. The data source of this study was oral text from speakers who lived in Padang and other places such as Padang Panjang, Bukit Tinggi and Sawah Lunto.

Abstract

Content-Based Instruction (CBI) is a very good concept to apply in any class including English Language Education class. Teaching language skills by having certain content is one of what CBI does. This research aims at developing Reading I materials by integrating reading skill and pedagogical knowledge for English Language Education students of University of Potensi Utama. It applied Research and Development (R&D) which dealt with some stages: needs analysis, review of literature, product development, expert validation, try out and dissemination. The result of this research is a set of text book of Reading I Materials containing pedagogical content which can be used in English Language Education of University of Potensi Utama. After try out, students who were respondents of this research said that Reading I materials developed by integrating reading and pedagogical skills are very interesting and useful because it relates to their interests and add their knowledge on English language teaching.

Abstract

The results of preliminary study in the eighth grade of SMPN 3 Pasuruan show that the junior high school students face some problems in speaking. Most of the students had low motivation to speak because they were afraid of making grammatical mistakes. To overcome the problems, the researcher implemented the information gap technique. This study adopted the Classroom Action Research (CAR) design proposed by Kemmis and Mc Taggart (1988). The results of the study show that the information gap technique met the criteria of success. The students’ level of motivation increased from low to fair. And 58% of students show an increase in the frequency of speaking from passive to active and 8.4% of students show an increase in the frequency of speaking from passive to very active. In this study, the researcher used real life materials, gave examples to clarify the instructions, informed the students of the learning objectives, and used group work instead of pair work.

Abstract

Randai is indigeneous oral literature that performed and seen as an interaction medium that has been rooted in Minangkabau society from generation to generation. The purpose of the study was to describe the local wisdom values of Minangkabau in performance of randai. The instrument used for collecting data was written test. The method of the study used library research by Miles Huberman (2014). These data were analysed applying qualitative descriptive method to find out and describe the local wisdom values of Minangkabau in performance of Randai based on antropolinguistics study. The results of the study showed that there can be found the local wisdom values of minangkabau culture from performance of randai. Hence, it was concluded that randai should be revitalised and inventorised not for the Minangkabau society but also for Indonesian culture.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out how the application of the Magnetic Board Media to improve students’ English vocabulary achievement. This is a Classroom Action Research which used the Kemmis & Mc. Taggart Model in two cycles. Each cycle consists of four stages: plans, actions, observations, and reflections. The subjects in this study were students of Grade IV-A of The State Elementary School No. 104202 Bandar Setia Percut Sei Tuan. The object of this study was the application of Magnetic Board Media to improve the students’ vocabulary achievement. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the percentage of completeness from pre-action, Cycle-I and Cycle-II increased. The percentage of student’s completeness in pre-action was 18%, in the Cycle-I was 53%, and in the Cycle-II was 87%. There was a significant increase 69% from pre-action to cycle-II. Thus, this study was successful and can be said that the use of the magnetic board media can improve students' vocabulary achievement, long term memory, and motivation.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the factors influenced language shift of Mandailingnese in Bandar Selamat. Mandailingnese language is one of the vernaculars or Regional Languages in Indonesia that some of the society in Bandar Selamat. People are influenced by another language, because of several factors that people would not use their own language purely anymore. They would shift from their own language to another, which was known as language shift. Siregar (1998) found that language shift happen in the youth generation bilingual in Medan. According to Fasold (1984), language shift refers to changes in language use among a community of speakers such as when a community started to use on language in domain and functions in which its members had previously used another language and shift in the number of speakers of a language. In general, Mandailingnese Language shift in Bandar Selamat was influenced by bilingualism factors, economic factors, social factor, political factor, demographic factor, value and attitude factor, and the lack of Mandailingnese language competence factor. However, there are few different factors between the second and the third generation. Unlike the second generation, bilingual and economic factor are not significant factors for the third generation which influence them to shift from Mandailingnese language to Indonesian language since most of the subjects of the third generation are monolinguals.

Abstract

This study details about verb phrase in English and Minang Language. The objective of this research is to find the similarities and differences of verb phrase in English and Minang Language by using tree diagrams structures in Syntax. The research analyze about the formation and function of verb phrase in both languages. The data to support this study were collected by reading references books and the Minang’s poem. The findings showed the similarities of verb phrase in English and Minang language based on forms and functions. The similarities of both languages could be formed by adding Verb + Noun, Verb + Adjective, Verb + Adverb, and Numeral Phrase. While, verb phrase in English could be formed by Prepositional Phrase.

Abstract

This study was intended to find out the effect of using cooperative learning strategy on students’ speaking ability of SMA Mardi Lestari. The research was conducted by quantitative research that used experimental group and control group. The population of this study was all the second year students of SMA Mardi Lestari Medan. 49 students were taken as the sample of this research. The sample was divided into two groups: the first group (25 students) as the experimental group and the second group (24 students) as the control group. The writer used t-test formula to analyze the data. The data were calculated by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis shows that t-observed (6.13) is higher than t-table (3.551) at the level of significance 0.01 and the degree of freedom (df) 47. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that Cooperative Learning Strategy affects the students’ speaking ability.
