Abstract

In a film production, production design is an important aspect that supports the narrative or story. In production design visual metaphors are often used as concepts for sets and props which have the ability to transform a long text into a shorter visual. Visual metaphor itself is a representation of a place, person, nature, and object that can be a tool to build a narrative as well as describe the nature of a character in a film. The use of visual metaphors can be done by understanding the characters in the film, because each have different characteristics and its own uniqueness. By understanding and using the 3-dimensional aspect of the character as the basis for the design of sets and props, production designers can apply visual metaphors in the design of sets and properties that are suitable for the needs of characters and narratives in films. This paper uses a qualitative approach which elaborates the process of applying visual metaphors into the set and properties design, by using the 3-dimensional character theory as the base for producing the short film trailer entitled Setengah Nada Bergeming. This research finds that by dissecting each element of the 3-dimensional character, production designer can intensify not only how a character is represented and how its contributes in building the entire narrative of the story. Keyword: visual metaphors, 3-D characters, sets, properties, short film, trailer.

Abstract

Humor language is verbal humor created through words, the meaning of words, and jargon. Directors use language humor to build comedy scenes, introduce the characters, or give the impression of a scene. However, sometimes, excessive techniques will be insufficient for the scene itself. Therefore, this study aims to find how language humor in comedy scenes in a film is overused and eventually dries the comedy. Research material was selected from a comedy movie entitled "Ngenest," produced in 2015, directed by Ernest Prakasa, who has a comical background and often uses comedic techniques in his films. The research method chosen is qualitative, with content analysis to identify the value of integrated humor and scenes in the movie "Ngenest.” Keywords: humor, humor language, scene, comedy

Abstract

Malang is a city in East Java. Malang offers not only natural resources as tourist attractions, but also many others, one of which is pottery. Pottery is the art of crafting and shaping clay as desired. Pottery craftsmen who are still active in Malang reside in Pottery Village (Kampung Gerabah). There is a decline in the region’s pottery production center during the crisis. In fact, many pottery businesses went bankrupt; some residents left the profession and searched for new livelihoods. But lately the craftsmen who are still active produce pottery only by order, such as small pots, souvenirs, and wall decorations. The solution offered in this research is a documentary video to educate the audience, since the visual and audio elements of video can convey information such that it can easily be accepted by the audience. The research method used is observation, namely direct observation of the intended location and by conducting interviews with the craftsmen, which were then supported by literature studies sourced from books and journals. The process of designing this documentary video began with pre-production including concepts, storylines, storyboards, and continued with the shooting and editing production stages. The editing stage combined visual and audio elements including text, images, and backsound. Finally, post-production is the process of rendering, whereby all elements are converted into one format, a video form, so that it can be played on several media.
