Abstract

This qualittaive research is about flouting maxim in Need for Speed movie. Flouting maxim was an action where the participants disobeyed the rule of cooperative principle in conversation. In this research, the researcher focused his research to analyze flouting maxims in Need for Speed movie and their effects in conversation. The research was conducted by accomodating one theory: flouting maxim by Herbert Paul Grice (1975). Grice’s theory determined flouting maxim as follow: flouting maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of quality, flouting maxim of relevant, flouting maxim of manner. Techniques of data collection: downloading Need for Speed movie, watching Need for Speed flouting maxim utterances. The finding of the data analysis showed that there were fifteen data found in Need for Speed movie. From the data, the researcher found flouting maxim of quality (four data), flouting maxim of quantity (two data), flouting maxim of relevant (seven data), and flouting maxim of manner (two data). In addition, the effects of flouting maxim are angry (five data), disappointed (one data), normal (four data), confusion (one data), offense (one data), surprised (one data), suspicious (one data), and disappointed (one data). The researcher expected the next researchers to conduct analysis on conversational maxim with other objectives of research. And different theories.

Abstract

Self-deception was deceivers make themselves to believe something which they knew it was false, while hypocrisy was the practice of pretending to be different from what one really. Self-deception and hypocrisy were the core of this research in the filmBoss Baby. There were four research problems in this research; what were self-deception found in thefilmBoss Baby, what kinds of hypocrisy in the film Boss Baby, what were the factors of hypocrisy found in the film Boss Baby, and what were the revelation of main characters self-deception to raise his hypocrisy. The data in this research were in the form of utterances and situations that referred to self-deception and hypocrisy in Boss Baby. This research was done by analyzing the data qualitatively. There were some steps in analyzing the data; identifying, classifying, describing, and analyzing the data. The researchers also used theory of self-deception from Mele, theory of kinds of hypocrisy from Spiegel and theory factors of hypocrisy from Lonnie Lee Best. The findings of the analysis were eleven data found by the researchers; five self-deception, four kinds of hypocrisy (hypocrisy of pretense, hypocrisy of blame, hypocrisy inconsistency and hypocrisy of complacency), a factor of hypocrisy (carnal desires), and a datum of self-deceptionrevelation to raise hypocrisy,the boss baby actually wants a family not a position.

Abstract

Teaching strategy and media are two important factors that influence the success of teaching and learning process. The implementation of Buzz group method that are integrated with audio visual media is one example of the effective teaching strategies that can be used to teach speaking. Students taking ESP class at UNARS had difficulties with speaking skill because of their limited vocabularies. Thus, this research tried to see how if Buzz group implemented with audio visual media implemented to the students to mprove their speaking skill. This CAR was held in one cycle. The result showed that the strategy was effective in improving the students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

This research is entitled A Morphological Study of Affixes Used by Major and Minor Characters in the Novel Through the Looking Glass. The objectives of this research are to identify the affixes, to find out the derivation and inflection changes used by characters in the novel Through the Looking Glass and to find out the most dominant affixes. The method of this research is qualitative research. The results of this research are: (1) affixes found at major characters are suffix, prefix, and confix. Afterward, affixes found at minor characters are suffix and prefix, (2) this research found 40 derivations and 85 inflection used by major characters. Besides, this research found six derivations and 17 inflections used by minor characters, and (3) the most dominant affix found at characters are suffix. In total of suffixes used by major character, there were 31 –ing, 10 –ly, 42 –s, 3 –y, 3 –able, 2 –ation, - -d, 15 –ed, 4 –er, 3 –es, 1-est, 2 –ful, 1 –ination, 1 –ish, 3 –ment, 1 –ness, 1 –or, 1 –ous, 1 –t, and 1 -th. Afterward, suffix found at minor characters there were 1 –ance, 4 –ing, 2 –es, 10 –s, 1 –ly, and 1 –ed.

Abstract

In this qualitative research, the researcher only focused on the event or situation in the novel depicting lesbians and gays sigs. The researcher used The Great Gatsby novel as an object in this research. This research was aimed at one main purpose it was to depict the sign of lesbians and gays in the story of The Great Gatsby. The utterances in the dialogue of The Great Gatsby were used as the main data. All of the data were analyzed by using Lois Tyson’s theory. The results revealed that there were eight lesbian signs and seven signs of gay. In addition, the researcher got that there were consious type was dominated sign in this novel. The researcher expected to the next researcher could be did research on the lesbian and gay signs with the different types of this research.

Abstract

Internationalization has been done in some Indonesian universities, including University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The program has opened a wider opportunity for foreign lecturers to share their experiences with the students within the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. In addition to that, this program has also provided a greater chance for international students to enroll at the university. The number of International students in the University of Muhamadiyah Malang indeed has increased over the years. In regards to that, this present study identified challenges faced by the international students in the multicultural classroom. In doing so, the study involved six international students from two different countries; China and Thailand. The students studied at English Language Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. Using questionnaires and a semi-structured interview, this study analyzed the result thematically. The research findings revealed five areas of challenges that the International students experienced in the university.

Abstract

This research is purposed to analyze the structure groups of hegemony and the types of hegemony that happen in Zootopia movie. This research was done using qualitative method. The data were gained by watching the movie, paying attention to the statement and conversation and then analyzed the structures group and the types of hegemony. The data were analyzed by; data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing based on Miles and Huberman‟s theory. The findings of this research reveal that there are two structure gorups of hegemony in Zootopia movie. The first is dominant group that have two parts, civil society and the state. The civil society in Zootopia is the common citizen who did the hegemony toward the weak characters. The state is people who living under system of government who has a power to do hegemony toward the civil society. The second is the subordinate group, the group that dominated by the dominant group. This research also reveals that hegemony in Zootopia movie has two types; coercive control and consensual control. In coercive control, the dominant force the subordinate group to agree and follow their rule while in the consensual control, the dominant influence the subordinate group by their thought to make them follow their rule. In Zootopia movie, coercive power is the dominant and commonly used by the charaters.

Abstract

The study identifies appropriate Mind Mapping techniques to enhance the Tourism and Business Management Students’ writing ability. This particular research was categorized as action research which consists of some steps namely: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. There were two kinds of data used in this research, qualitative data and quantitative data. The qualitative data were gained from classroom observation and interview and transformed into field notes and interview transcripts by using qualitative data analysis. The implementation of mind mapping as one of techniques successfully improved students’ ability and motivation in learning writing. Mind mapping helped the students in generating and developing their ideas and help them easily in way of collecting information in writing descriptive text about tourism destination.

Abstract

This research analyzed metaphor translation in the novel of Angels and Demons with the purposes to analyzing the technique of translation and to know the quality of metaphor translation found in the novel Angels and Demons. The data were analyzed by using the theory of metaphor by Larson (1998), technique of translation used theory of Molina and Albir (2002) and quality of translation used Translation Quality Assessment theory by Nababan (2012). The analysis started by analyzing metaphorical expression, classifying the technique of translation and identifying the quality of translation based on the theory that was use for this research. The findings revealed that there were 119 metaphor expressions with 84 live metaphors and 35 dead metaphors. The metaphor translation used nine techniques of translation and the quality of metaphor translation was qualified by the assessment 2.90.

Abstract

This study disscused the irony in memes on Instagram. The memes were selected by selecting some accounts on Instagram. The aims of this study are to identify the types of irony in meme and to describe the meaning of irony used in memes on Instagram. In conducting this research, the methodology used is descriptive method by Creswell (2008). Theory of types of irony by Perrine (1966) and theory of meaning by Leech (1981) are used to do the analysis. The result of this research shows that there are twenty six verbal irony and four situational irony. Verbal irony in memes can attract the readers interest , and situational irony gives funny effects because of discrepancy between appearance and reality, or between expectation and fulfillment. Verbal irony and situational irony found on the Instagram are illustrated through the utterances in memes, and these memes have implicit meaning (non-literal meaning). How the readers understand the memes depends on their culture, time, and individual experience. Besides, the readers can get the meaning of memes if they compare the memes with the topic that has been viral their life.
