Abstract

This paper examines, describes, and analyzes the types of metaphor used in Tribunnews.com headlines particularly Corona issues. The data were taken from March 2nd 2020 until July 14th 2020 with keywords Corona and Covid-19 and, were analyzed in the frame of qualitative method. The data taken were analyzed by using conceptual metaphor proposed by Lakof and Johnson. The analysis deals with the types of metaphor called structural metaphor, ontological metaphor, and orientational metaphor. The result shows how Corona was mapped into other domain in order to simplify and attract reader’s attention.

Abstract

This study is aimed at knowing the types of cohesion and coherence uses in writing a descriptive text by English Education Program students. The researcher focused on lexical cohesion, repeated key nouns, and consistent pronouns. The method used in this study is a qualitative. The data were collected by using a test and documentation. Participants of the research were twenty two students. The finding showed that nine students used fifteen items of reiteration and one student used collocation. In coherence, the researcher found that all students used repeated key nouns in their writing with 131 items used. Then, fifteen students used sixteenitems of consistent pronouns. From the research, it can be concluded that the students used cohesion and coherence well in their writing.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has an impact on education. It has changed the learning system, from conventional interaction into digital interaction. The lecturers and students in Malaysia and Indonesia are required to master online learning to conduct the teaching and learning processes. However, not many lecturers apply it maximally. This study aims to find out the comparison of online learning effectiveness in English Language Education (ELE) in Malaysia and in Indonesia. This quantitative research used a questionnaire survey to collect data. The data were analyzed descriptively with tabulations and distributions of empirical data. The result reveals that 75% of Malaysian lecturers and 83% of Indonesian lecturers prefer to use synchronous learning; 25% of Malaysian lecturers and 17% of Indonesian lecturers prefer to use asynchronous learning; 65% of Malaysian students and 71% of Indonesian students prefer to use synchronous learning; 35% of Malaysian students and 29% of Indonesian students prefer to use asynchronous learning. For synchronous learning, 58% of the total respondents in Malaysia like virtual meeting as an online learning tool. In Indonesia, 59% of the total respondents like phone call as an online learning tool. For asynchronous learning, 54% of the total respondents in Malaysia and Indonesia like blog as an online learning tool. Online learning has good effects on the English learning skills, especially listening. Academics in both countries agree that online learning is beneficial in the ELE learning and teaching process. It can be generally concluded that the use of online learning and teaching is effective in ELE.

Abstract

This research explores how language mediates Corona or Covid-19. To find out this phenomenon, a few Corona-related words, phrases, and structures are put into discussion. The paper, also, draws on the languaging of Corona, as a global disaster, with a highlight of the practices, attitudes, and discourses expressed over this disaster. First, the paper introduces a generic exposition on the various aspects of global disasters in terms of linguistic structures, which are all supported by some previous researches. Then, a broader interpretation of how language mediates Corona is elaborated. Finally, the paper states a few findings, conclusions, and further areas of research. Language plays a significant role in shaping disasters, and in this concern, the paper revealed that Corona pandemic is highly mediated at the lexical, meta-linguistic, and conceptual levels. Additionally, relating Corona to meta-linguistic aspects can underline a media-catastrophe link, one that may be worth a broader and further investigation.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the linguistic compression in the film Saving Private Ryan in the Indonesian subtitle on the speech acts. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The source of data is the conversation among characters in the film Saving Private Ryan. Meanwhile, data of this research are the utterances or sentences in the subtitle of the movie which involve two different languages; English (Source Language) and Indonesian (Target Language). The finding shows that there are 22 data of illocutionary speech acts which are translated by using linguistic compression technique and categorized into three types of illocutionary acts. The quality of the subtitles translated by that technique is very good because it translated accurately, the meaning or intention in words can be accurately delivered into the target language.

Abstract

Based on Indonesia’s current curriculum, English is no longer compulsory for primary school subject; it is only required to be taught starting at the secondary school level. However, in Batu city, the local government treats English as compulsory local content subject for their area development, which certainly raises several challenges for English teachers in Batu due to the lack of supplementary books and other supporting activities. Since 2019, the supplementary book writing project has been initiated, however, the draft still needs to be evaluated before being published, and this is the focus of this project. The study was projected to describe the development process of the Bright English textbook. This study employed a descriptive-analytical approach, involving primary school teachers, students, and an expert. Questionnaires were distributed to teachers and students to evaluate the overall display and content of the book, whereas an evaluation sheet was delivered to the expert to rate the language level and content. Adapting Richards (2001)’s material development theory, three stages of development were present; training, implementation, and evaluation-publication. The training stage facilitated teachers to better comprehend the textbook structures and varied activities relevant to Batu's wisdom and values, while the implementation stage encouraged more interactive and fun collaborative learning plans through synchronous offline and online meetings. The evaluation and publication phase perfected the textbook in various aspects such as its layout, font style selection, picture, instructions, number of pages, language mechanics, uniformity of graphic design, and placement inconsistency.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries that have ethnic and cultural diversity. One such culture is a culture of Aceh in Aceh province where the origin of Acehnesse inhabit in this province. They use Aceh language and Bahasa Indonesia in their daily communication. The aim of this study was to find out the reason of switching in Aceh traditional market. This is a descriptive qualitative research which implemented purposive sampling. The researchers took five informants (orange sellers) in one of traditional markets in Aceh. The data of this research were in the form of phrases, sentences, and paragraph from the orange sellers’ utterances. The researchers gained the data through recording the conversation between the orange sellers and the buyers in traditional market. The researchers focused on the code switching made by the orange sellers as the data. Then, researchers analyzed the data by applying the thematic analysis. The finding was code switching used by bilingualism such as in the traditional market, they were for: (1) repetitive and (2) relationship-building.

Abstract

The advantages of collaborative writing and peer feedback have contributed to give significant effect to the writing ability of L1 (first language) learners, L2 (second language) learners, and FL (foreign language) learners. The objective of this study was to find out the strengths and weaknesses of collaborative writing and peer feedback in an EFL intensive reading and writing coursework classroom especially in English education department students of Hasyim Asy’ari University. This study used a qualitative method where the data were described qualitatively. As this study used a qualitative approach, therefore observation and interview were used as instruments to collect the data. The result showed that collaborative writing and peer feedback strategies were not easy to be implemented in an EFL classroom. There were some strengths and weaknesses found during the observation. The strengths of these strategies showed that students could share ideas, improve grammar and vocabulary, make students more active, have good cooperation among peers, build self-confidence and make students happy. However, the strategies may not give any significant effect on the students’ cognitive ability in writing skills if most of the students have the low ability in mastering English. In addition, a smart student would prefer to write individually than in collaborative writing.

Abstract

This article aims at describing the social life of the American people in several places that made the adventures of John Steinbeck as the author of the novel Travels with Charley in Search of America around the 1960s. American people’s lives are a part of world civilizations that literary readers need to know. This adventure was preceded by an author’s trip in New York City, then to California, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, New Jersey, Saint Lawrence, Quebec, Niagara Falls, Ohio, Chicago, Illinois, Michigan, North Dakota, the Rocky Mountains, Washington, the West Coast, Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, New Orleans, Salinas, and again ended in New York. In processing research data, the writer uses one of the methods of literary research, namely the Dynamic Structural Approach which emphasizes the study of the intrinsic elements of literary work and the involvement of the author in his work. The intrinsic elements emphasized in this study are the physical and social settings. The research data were obtained from the results of a literature study which were then explained descriptively. The writer found a number of descriptions of the social life of the American people in the 1960s, namely the life of the city, the situation of the inland people, and ethnic discrimination. The people of the city are busy taking care of their profession and competing for careers, inland people living naturally without competing ambitions, and black African Americans have not enjoyed the progress achieved by the Americans. The description of American society related to the fictional story is divided by region, namely east, north, middle, west, and south. The social condition in the eastern region is dominated by beaches and mountains, and is engaged in business, commerce, industry, and agriculture. The comfortable landscape in the northern region spends the people time as breeders and farmers. The natural condition in the middle region of American is very suitable for agriculture, plantations, and animal husbandry. Many people in the western American region facing the Pacific Ocean become fishermen. The natural conditions from the plains and valleys to the hills make the southern region suitable for plantation land.

Abstract

Godzilla, the most iconic movie monster that everyone will think of whenever someone talk with people about a giant monster obliterating a city. Its legacy has been living for almost seventy years and will keep live for the years to come. From looking at the perspective of Ecocentric theory, it seems that Godzilla is a force of nature that obliterates the Japanese city Tokyo to teach humans a lesson that our selfishness, arrogance and the attitude of placing ourselves on top of nature would only lead to tragic consequences. Using Conceptual Metaphor Theory, this article discuss about the movies which actually focuses on the core element of Godzilla instead of the portrayal of Godzilla as a monster fighter or as a savior of humanity in the aspects of ecocriticism, environmentalism, politics and post-modernism, along with the king of the monsters.
