Abstract

Teaching reading has been long discussed in the context of English teaching curriculum in Indonesia.  The ground of English curriculum (e.g. 1984, 1994, 2004 English curriculum) lays reading as the main model of teaching English in the secondary school across classroom levels.  Many English teachers have been occupied with the concepts and perceive that some concepts in teaching reading are interchangeable with reading strategies.  This paper tries to give review on the reading definition, reading models, reading strategies, teaching reading, and model of teaching reading in the communicative context.  The reading models present psycholinguistics model and schema theory models. The strategies of reading discuss bottom up, top-down, and interactive strategies.  Strategies in teaching reading deal with reading for information, mapping, skimming and scanning.  The article is closed with teaching techniques covering pre-reading, while reading, and post-reading.

Abstract

This research is aimed at describing the readiness of teaching-learning English at elementary school (ES) in Kodya Mataram, accentuating on perception of respondents; English teacher’s qualifications; the availability of English techer and teaching facility; students’ interest of study English; and constrains in English instruction. This survey assigns its subjects to 14 principals without EP, 49 parens of children’s schools with EP, and 55 parents of children’s schools without EP. The instruments used to collect data are questionnaire, interview guide, and observation form. The study reveals that (1) most respondents in each group are ready to teach English at ES; (2) English teachers’ qualification meet the criteria; (3) Of 30 ES without EP, 7 (23.33%) are ready, English text books for ES with are categorized mostly ready; and (4) Students at ES with are mostly ready. In addition, 9 (30%) of students at 30 non-ESP schools are totally not ready.

Abstract

The goals of this research are: (1) identify the productive and innovative program of youth policy, (2) finding the productive and innovative models of youth policy, and (3) finding the pursue factor and the support factor of youth program. The time of research spent five months, since July to November 2005. The steps of research are fourteen steps. Research located at  Bengkulu Province. Sample is taken by purposive for KUPP Program. Respondent composition are: young 40 respondent, bureaucrats 4 respondents, village head 4 respondents, partnership 3 respondents, student 4 respondents. The total sum of all respondents in every province are 55 respondents. The methods of data analysis uses qualitative and quantitative descriptive. Based on the result of research it concluded that government models of youth policy applied are: (1) able to absorb the employment and able to progress community prosperity, (2) able to build frame work of self government, capability, skill, motivation and work ethos.

Abstract

This study investigates local geiunses Ammatoa tradition to maintain forest sustainability to form conservation characters of students. The study used etnography apprach.  Focuse of the study was Pasang ri Kajang practiced by Ammatoa community reciding in sevent sub villages of Kajang district Bulukumba South Sulawesi.  The study revealed that (1) Ammatoa community has certain local geniuses to sustain forest conservation, (2) values of local geniuses in the Kajang tradition include: (a) spirituals, (b) responsibility, disciplines and honesty, (c) addherence to onward regulation, (d) caring of environment and working hard to maintain natural resources, (e) justice, humble, and peace keeping, (3) those values are integrated in the subject matters in the school curriulum to form character conservation for students and applied as alternative for learning resources.

Abstract

This study describes sutdents handicaps in writing simple scientific works in terms of paper. The handicaps were focused on organizing (1) title, introduction development, (3) defining problems, (4) citating and references, (5) factors causing problems in writing papers.  The study used descriptive design   assigning the IX graders of SMPN 3 Singosari, Malang.  The study revealed that Students’ problems in developing scintific work is high emphasizing in three factirs: lacking of knowledge on scintific writing, lacking of reading, and shortage of time allotment to practice writing.  Identification of the writing aspects showed that initial scintific writing is obvious.  Defining title comes first as the shortage, and development of background appears the most problems.  Conceptually, defining problem is complex and students are failed to formulate.  In addtiion, cetating in the text is more complex and writing references indicate mechanical failure that needs more practices and considerable writing.

Abstract

This research describes contents of diary perceived from memory, mind, and language aspects.  This research used content analysis design, focusing on analysis of students’ diaries.  Five diaries obtained from students were used for analysis.  Not all students memorized their daily events in a diary.  The study revealed that flows of expression in the diary indicate flow of mind, expression and word choice.  Memory shows sequence of events and chronological techniques of presentation.  Thinking process captures how events and linkages between facts are integrated.  Mind process shows critical thinking as reflected in the variety of word choices and sentence flows.  Evidently, diaries support students’ writing quality.

Abstract

This study implements classroom action research to increase motivation and skills to apply readability of measurement tool kit, using contextual and quantum teaching.  The study used classroom action research method. The process of the research subsequently includes planning, action, observation and reflection. The observation includes notifications, recording and interview. The result of this research reveals that the student obtained improved competence in the end of the second cycle. All of the student passed the examination with score above 80 (A) and 80% student handed these competency

Abstract

This study is intended to see the role of parental guidance to improve students’ achievement in IPA.  The study took place in the sixth grade students of SDN 004 Bontang Utara.  This study used correlational design. This study assigned 68 students as the respondents. Data of this study were collected from questionnaire and documents.  This study revealed that parental guidance significantly improves students’ achievement in IPA.  The higher the guidance is provided, the better the achievement in IPA the students gain.

Abstract

This research was development of learning equipment research that have oriented at Kemp. It was implemented through Science Techonoloy Society Approach and School Green Team. The subject of this research were  39 students of SMP Negeri 3 Bontang assigned as One Group Pretest and Posttest Design. The research discovered the following findings: activity of  Teacher’s School Green Team to guide student’s activity (25,31%),  motivation (24,75%) and student activity observing (23,75%) with the degree of instrument reliability 87.70%. The rising of student’s activity indicated: observing (27,00%), sharing and discusion (25,23%) with the degree of instrument’s reliability average 98,47%. The completeness of student learning individually and classically were reached feasibility and the learning plan was in good category. Generally this research showed that learning by Science Technology Society Approach through School Green Team increased learning achievement.

Abstract

This study is aimed to see frequency of reinforcement to maintain classroom interaction and motivation in biology class. The study was conducted at the third year students of SMPN 10 Tenggarong. The focus of the study was variations of reinforcement in terms of verbal and non-verbal reinforcement.  The subject of this study was a PPKn teacher teaching in the third grade. Using closed-ended observation, data were collected.  Analysis of the data was done using descriptive statistics, in terms of rate percentage and tabulation. The study revealed that frequency of reinforcement in the class does not indicate good learning model. The quality and effective techniques of giving reinforcement are crucial to improve class quality. Teachers should practice to achieve the craft of giving classroom reinforcement. .
