Abstract

Municipal solid waste has become one of major environmental issues and pollution sources. In cities of developing countries, the amount of waste is inversely proportional to the land area available for landfills. Cipayung Landfill in the city of Depok, Jakarta’s southern border, cannot support the volume of waste generated by the city’s 11 districts. This study presents the case of a community group in Tugu Village, Cimanggis, Depok, where a waste separation program had been adopted since 2014 but low rates of participation are still recorded. Earlier observations reveal uneven distribution and location of communal organic bins and transportation of mixed waste. Earlier researches discussed over relationship between waste management and people participation, information dissemination, environmental knowledge, attitude, behavior, facility availability, partially. Thus, this study aims to integrate all these notions by examining the correlations between participation, information exposure, environmental knowledge, environmental attitude and other conditions that may promote participation in waste separation practices. Quantitative approach with quantitative and qualitative methods is implemented. Questionnaires, interviews, and observations are used to collect data. Spearman correlations reveal that participation is very strongly correlated with information exposure, and environmental knowledge, but weakly correlated with environmental attitude. Other conditions include respondents’ daily activities, residence period in the community, family welfare level, facilities provision, and role of community leaders. This study confirms the importance of information dissemination on a routine basis, valid and persuasive messages, facilities provision, and leading actor’s role at the community level to help increase public participation in waste separation

Abstract

Silver nanoparticles have been studied for its application in wound healing therapy, while aqueous extract of Plantago major L has been studied also for its antibacterial and wound healing activity. This study aimed to obtain silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) through a green synthesis pathway using aqueous extract of Plantago major L. The initial study was performed to optimize the three concentration points of Plantago major L. aqueous extract, namely 0.125%, 0.25% and 0.5% and three synthetic temperature points (60 °C, 70 °C, and 80 °C). The formation of AgNPs were confirmed using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer which shows a peak at a wavelength of 445 nm. The obtained silver nanoparticles were then characterized using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS Nano), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) dan X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The study showed that the extract concentration of 0.25% with an optimum temperature of 70 °C was the optimal combination to produce the best AgNPs, based on the organoleptic parameters (as the color of silver was produced), the highest yield with weight of 9.13 mg and particle size of 129.20 nm with Polydispersity Index (PDI) of 0.25. The morphology of AgNPs showed the spherical shape and the crystallization of AgNPs showed a diffractogram pattern similar to the silver standard using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Antibacterial activity of AgNPs was tested against three bacterial strains, namely Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and was measured with diffusion method using paper disc. The antibacterial activity testing showed that AgNPS has better antibacterial activity than silver nitrate and is equivalent to its comparative antibiotics, gentamicin sulfate for gram-negative bacteria and Chloramphenicol for gram-positive bacteria.

Abstract

Data and information is the key in implementing evidence-based health policy, which has been problematic in Indonesia. The communication between researchers and policy makers must be further strengthened, by encouraging data visualizations as the narrative tools to optimize those communications. Mata-Data (https://mata-data.com) aimed to present national data on health and its social determinants in dynamic data visualization, which was previously presented in tables only. This program were developed in several steps. First, data extraction and analysis from data bank and offical reports. Second, website development subcontracted to external consultants. Third, trial and feedback conducted using online forms, both in quantitative and qualitative data. Fourth, evaluation and dissemination. Several important findings were established. At first, the limitation of data types (mainly categorical and ordinal) means that the multivariate display of data in one graphic was unavailable. However, in general, the user experiences were favorable. The superiority of data visualizations was agreed by the users. Nevertheless, several concerns emerged. First, the use of mobile device was growing. Second, the need of user for reference points, instead of comparing between provinces. Last, the interest for geographically deeper data, especially on city-district level. In conclusion, it can be observed that this program has evolved into something specific for Indonesian context. Further analysis in various concerns is needed to further how Mata-Data can improve data communication in Indonesia.

Abstract

Information Technology Needs in the current community are very high and very dynamics. This needs can be seen from the many aspects of community life that cannot be separated from the dependence on the use of ICTs. This dependency also occurs in the education environment, especially the environment of senior high school level education in DKI Jakarta. If schools can implement optimally this new type of learning, it’ll be possible there are no longer needed a separate type of national level test in Indonesia, question bank and teaching material can be share between schools in Indonesia, and learning can be done in wherever, whenever, and whoever want to study. This research activity was carried out derived from the results of direct observations, which had problems in the aspects of HR (teachers, students, and technical staffs), Technology Infrastructure, and leadership. This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative methods. The results showed that there were still many teachers who were not aware of the importance of LMS, so that the participation of teachers and students still used traditional methods. The student’s commitment has what commitment their teacher will give, if the teachers have not been committed to using LMS optimally, so will their students. LMS technical staffs themselves also face similar problems, where the direction of technical staffs implementing LMS depends on the direction of the leader.

Abstract

With the implementation of extension projects by higher education institutions, particularly by state universities and colleges, it is imperative that they undergo the continuous and relevant phases of monitoring and evaluation. Hence, feedbacks that can be obtained from the project’s beneficiaries are deemed necessary to improve and inform the whole process of conducting any extension activity. Considering the role of feedback mechanisms, this study sought to evaluate the implementation and quality of the Sambalaran Camp Project, which was carried out by the extension office of Bulacan State University – Meneses Campus in Bulacan Province, Philippines in its partner and adopted communities in the town of Bulakan and Guiguinto last 2017 and 2018. Results show that most of the 154 beneficiaries reported a strong level of agreement towards the implementation of the project. They also reported positive ratings, ranging from very good and excellent, in assessing the project’s quality. Open-ended qualitative responses revealed that they were interested in opening small business after gaining new knowledge and skills. T-test analysis revealed that the first batch (2017) of beneficiaries reported higher both level of agreement and positive rating than the second batch (2018), reflecting the latter’s observations concerning the lack of required training materials and allotment of minimal amount of time for a skills training activity.

Abstract

The concept of caring is used by nurses in providing nursing care. However, there are factors that influence nurses’ caring attitudes, such as job stress and dehumanization, which make nurse caring behavior decrease. Our program offers a solution to build a caring culture for cancer nurses. The activities carried out were the socialization of the caring culture to nurses, training for the head nurse as a change agent who guided nurses, assignment from the head of the hospital to the head nurse, and a guidance program for the head nurse as a champion to nurses. After the activity was finished, we evaluated the implementation of caring culture by focus group discussion for the head nurse. As a result, eight themes were obtained: observation guidance about caring behavior to help champions monitor and increase the nurses’ caring attitudes, training about caring to help nurses change their caring attitude, excessive workload makes nurses display less-caring behavior, Whatsapp application helps socialize caring culture, spiritual power from the inside fosters caring behavior, support from hospital leaders for caring behavior, needs for caring behavior training and therapeutic communication for all health care providers and administrative staff, needs for caring behavior standard operating procedures (SOP) and guidance from senior nurses. The number of nurses who behave caring well also increase by 38% after intervention (p = 0.021). The result of FGD can be suggestions for the hospital of ways to improve the caring culture.
