English Focus was launched with the intention to make quality research output available for scholars in the field of language education. Although the focus is primarily on research on language education, we will also consider papers in other areas of applied linguistics such as language testing as far as they have clear implications for language teaching/learning. Reviews of the literature are not acceptable for this Journal; however, status papers by experts in the field are called for as long as explicit implications are drawn in favor of language teaching and learning. English Focus (p-ISSN: 2614-638X and e-ISSN: 2614-6355) is an open access academic, scholarly peer-reviewed journal and follows a double-blind review policy. The Journal is scheduled for publication semiannually, in July and December, with the first issue to appear in December 2017.

Abstract

Guiding is a branch of oral communication. In oral communication, guiding can be included as productive skill. English guiding is one of the academic lessons in the fourth semester. Being a tour guide is a very important job in tourism part. In many cases, the tour guide is a traveller's first impression of a foreign country. In other cases a tour guide may be responsible for teaching tourists about the culture and sites in a city or town. Improving students? communicative skill is the goal of teaching English guiding, because the student can express themselves and know how to use language well. In the real situation in teaching guide process, lecturer cannot escape from reality. It occurs because there are some problems faced by the lecture and the student. The lecturer cannot make student pay attention; make the students? lack of creativity in making interactive guiding topics, and engagement in whole teaching learning process. This research applied photovoice as a technique to increase the student?s ability in speaking English guiding. Photovoice is suitable technique in teaching speaking skill in English guiding because it gives student chance to communicate with different context and different social by photo as a learning media. This reviews were taken from Beverly Palibroda (2009) Photovoice implementation and Speaking Assessment from Brown Lavinson (2004). This research was conducted by three cycles such as: pre-test, cycle I and cycle II. In composing this research the writer used qualitative descriptive method by classroom action research (CAR).             The result of this research showed that the mean score in pre-test before implementing Photovoice clearly showed that the ability of the subject under study was relatively ? fairly satisfactory ? in the level of mastery of speaking rubric. There were increasing in cycle I after implementing Photovoice technique. The result of the data analysis of the reflection score in cycle I showed increasing the mean score of 7.11 It was higher than the result of pre-test. In the cycle II, which the treatment was more intensive in order of weakness of the students had been known. The result of the data anaysis of reflection or post-test in cycle II that the mean score was 8.18. The different between mean score in cycle I and II was 1.07. It showed that the student?s speaking guiding ability improved after the researcher applied the photovoice thecnique to the students.

Abstract

This study addresses the question of the respondents ?problems in writing a research article. The participants in this study were six teachers who enrolled in the journal writing class in a university in Karawang. Three of them are ready with submission, but three others are not. The data were collected by way of two techniques: analysis of the article portfolio and interviews. The data were later codified and triangulated in order to reveal the participants? technical problems based on the research article elements and participants? psychological interference. The findings show that the respondents still had problems in achieving the communicative purposes of the journal article elements. In general their problems were in giving justifications. Their writing also tend to be failed to spot the justification of their choice of the research methodology. They still missed to fill the gap with the previous researches, missed the mark to give interpretation on the results and discussion section, and do not offer recommendation in the conclusion. Likewise, the participants also have some of psychological interference in composing and submitting their article.

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing students? descriptive writing skills that engage the academic performance among the eleventh-year-students in the academic year of 2017-2018. This research applied for the quantitative method and involved 60 students of the eleventh year students of Islamic state high school (Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1) Klaten as the respondents. Data collection used the students? descriptive writing test. Data were statistically analyzed the SPPS program to gain the descriptive analyses. The finding showed that the overall achievement of students? organization component was in the average level with 73.3% respondents, mechanics component was in the average level with 66.7% respondents, evidence component was in the average category with 46.7% respondents, and sentence structure component was in the average level with 55% respondents. The lowest score gained in descriptive writing was sentence structure (M = 2.533; SD = .700) and and the highest score was on organization component (M = 2.733; SD = .446). This research concludes that students? descriptive wrting skills laid on the average category.

Abstract

This research was done to see students? TOEFL score especially for fifth semester of Politeknik Harapan Bersama Tegal majoring Mechanical Engineering. Descriptive design using quantitative approach was chosen by the researcher. The sample is 45 students of Mechanical Engineering Study Program. The TOEFL test was used as research instrument. Descriptive statistics was used as data analysis technique, mean and percentage. The result of this research showed that student obtained problems in getting a TOEFL score with an average score 424 which was still at the basic proficiency category. The researcher found that the highest problem received by the students is listening section where student obtained correct answers only 23.7%. The students obtained the lowest score is in the short conversation with the percentage 31.27%. Then the structure and written expression, students obtained average score lowest in structure with a percentage 30.6%.

Abstract

This research is a research and development (R & D) study. The procedures in conducting this research were held in some activities involving the lecturer and the students of Sharia Banking study program. Some activities will also involve some experts in certain fields, i.e. English materials expert and Sharia Banking expert. The objectives of this research study are: (1) to identify the needs in conducting a matriculation program for Sharia Banking study program which are developed; (2) to design the materials for Sharia Banking study program in accordance to the implementation of a matriculation program. Based on the findings on the needs, the matriculation program covers materials such as grammar review, and the four macro skills review. The materials provide relevant reviews which enable to show the competency of each students. In terms of the goal, it helps the students to accelerate their level to the required level to start the new semester. From research result, the average normalized gain shows up 0, 47 meaning that the design for matriculation program has an average effectiveness and can describe the competence level of Sharia Banking study program students. At last, this reference will be able to help in designing a matriculation program for Sharia Banking study program.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to obtain descriptive information about the problems and problem solving in learning listening comprehension. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative research and investigates the students? problems in listening comprehension at the fourth semester and the steps to overcome their problems. There are 23 students at the fourth semester of English Education Study Program Peradaban University in the academic year 2018/2019 as the sample. In collecting the data, the researcher uses questionnaire and interview as the instruments.The researcher finds the most problems faced by the fourth studentsare lack of concentration, native speaker speaking speed, unfamiliar words, and lack of effort to understand each word.The solution offeredto solve those problems are focus and concentrate while listening class, concentrate on what is heard, and write things that are important when listening to material spoken by native speaker; find the meanings of unfamiliar words, look at the dictionary to find out difficult words, check words that are not clearly heard in dictionary, memorize vocabulary, and read English text and listen to English audio; and familiarize the students with the rulers of pronunciation in order to help them hear the different forms of rapid natural speech and ask them to imitate native speakers? pronunciation. It concludes that learning information about the problems and problem solving at the fourth semester are because of the fact that their learning outcomes are still far from being standard. Therefore, problem solving in listening comprehension learning is expected to minimize the problems faced by students of the fourth semester of English Education Study Program Peradaban University in learning process so that they get satisfying learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study investigates students? causes of students? difficulties, kinds of students? difficulties, and the most dominant problem in writing recount text written by ten students at a Senior High School in Indramayu, West Java. This study employed a qualitative research design, embracing characteristics of a case study. The data were obtained from collection of samples of students? recount texts. The findings revealed that most students have been able to implement the schematic structures and linguistic features of argumen texts, which indicates the ability of students to write the texts and to achieve its purpose. However, some students found difficulties in terms of the use of tenses, the use of vocabulary, and the use of specific participants. Based on the analysis of students? writing, it was found some causes that made students did some mistakes in writing recount texts. Based on these findings, it is recommended that explicit teaching be needed to develop students? writing skills.

Abstract

Communicative  Language  Teaching  (CLT)  is  a  way  to  deal  with  the  educating  of  second  and  unknown  dialects  that  emphasis  on  cooperation  as  both  the  methods  and  the  last  objective  of  learning  a  language.  Targets  are  (1)  to  discover  Effectiveness  of  CLT  Approach  in  Improving  Speaking  Ability.  (2)  huge  contrasts  between  students  who  are  instructed  by  CLT  and   not.  Quantitative  research  is  a  true  design  experiment.  Design  used  was  a  pretest-posttest  control  group  design.  Population  is  eighth  grader  students  in  Junior  High  School  1  Tegal.  Research  uses  cluster  random  sampling  with  two  group  design  (experiment  group  and  control  group).  Data  was  broke  down  utilizing  a  t-test,  score  of  the  t-test  is  2.744.  Score  of  t-table  is  at  5%  level  importance  and  on  level  of  62  is  1.670,  t-test  result  is  higher  than  t-table  (2.744>1.670).  t-test  hypothesis  is  rejected,  and  t-table  hypothesis  is  accepted.  CLT  improve  speaking  capability.

Abstract

Indriyani et al, (2013) stated that many students had dificulty in understanding the generic structure of analytical exposition text. Therefore, the present study tried to investigate the correlation between students understanding in writing generic structure of analytical exposition and the quality of students? writing in second grade of senior hight school. Grounded in explanatory correlational research design by Creswell (2011), this study conducted over two weeks in one of senior high school in Indramayu. Close-ended questionnaire and writing test were instruments to collect the data and it was analyzed  by using SPSS 22. The statistical calculation from students understanding in writing generic stucture of the text and writing test indicated that the value of tcount was 3.23 and the value of ttable was 0.361. It can be concluded that the hypothesis was accepted because tcount 3.23 > ttable 0.361. The finding reveal that there was middle correlation or middle prediction in students understanding of generic structure of analytical exposition and students writing quality with the score 0,52.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to know the effectiveness of  Content-Based Instruction approach in teaching writing skills. Pre-test and post-test are used in this study to get the data. The samples of this study consisted of 39 students, they are  Class VIII H as an experimental group and class VIII I as a control group. The data were analyzed by statistical analysis. Then, The statistical calculation showed the value of T-obs was 14.206, while the value of T-table was 2.021, meaning that T-obs is higher than T-table. In conclusion, therefore, it means that the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted while the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It means that the implementation of Content-Based Instruction is effective to teach writing skills for Junior High School Students.
