Abstract

English for Specific Purpose (ESP) refers to teaching and learning English as a foreign language for the purpose in using it in the certain domain.  The aimed of this study to wholly analyse the cornerstone of ESP focusing on needs analysis; necessities, wants and lacks. The study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D), see Richey and Klein (2015). The data were obtained from questionnaires and interviews. Additionally, the results of needs analysis shown that English language needs of administrators majoring in daily conversation and English for profession (90 %) with various topics, then (20%) focusing on academic field. Furthermore, it was found that, there were 70% students as C2 (Basic-upper level) and 30% were C1 (Basic-lower level). Furthermore, schedule and difficulties in understanding materials were found as lacks for the administrators. In conclusion, the results of this study with suggestion for ESC program frequently instructors or teachers to design the syllabi and develop teaching materials related to the findings, and institution to issue the policy. It is strongly required do be done as soon as possible in order to support the State of Polytechnic Ambon becomes the best university in eastern Indonesia and can be a reference campus.

Abstract

Writing scientific articles for higher education students, especially undergraduate ones will be difficult without habituation, training, and program with product oriented in form of book. If it runs naturally and lecturers only give assignments to write scientific articles without education or literacy education, they tend to make plagiarism. This study aims at improving the students’ skills of writing scientific articles through ‘One Semester One Book’ writing program. Classroom activity is designed as the pillar of literacy namely reading, writing, and arithmetic in accordance with the integrated language learning approach by combining four language skills which is oriented by product of articles or book. The results of the study show that there are improvements of the students’ scientific articles writing skills achieved by 89 students in some aspects. They cover the progress of: first, skills of determining the research problems from 35 students (39%) to 85 students (95%); second, skills of determining the theme and tittle of the scientific articles from 24 students (26%) to 89 (100%); third, skills of determining the word choice appropriately from 25 students (28%) to 80 students (89%); fourth, skills of using correct spelling based on General Indonesian Spelling Guidelines (PUEBI) rules from 35 students (39%) to 75 students (84%); fifth, skills of applying citation method from 25 students (28%) to 80 students (89%); sixth, improvement of the number of the students who do not commit plagiarism from 25 students (28%) to 85 students (95%); and seventh, skills of writing contemporary issues about education or religion from 34 students (38%) to 84 students (94%). The research findings reveal that the ‘One Semester One Book’ writing program is strategic in improving the students’ skills of writing scientific articles.

Abstract

This study was generally attempted to find the effect of ice breaking to increase students' motivation in English learning at the first grade of SMP Nurul Jadid.  This research used pre-experimental design by using one shot case study pre-test and post-test. Before the treatment, the researcher gave the pre-test in one class. Moreover, the researcher taught English by using ice breaking in the experimental class. The last, the researcher conducted the post-test to know whether an ice breaking was effective for teaching English in experimental class. Based on the data analysis, the data t-test (2.77) was higher than t-table value (2.042). The result analyzing showed that there was significant difference on the students’ motivation taught by using ice breaker. The students’ mean score of the pre-test of the experiment class was 60. Then, in the post-test, the mean score of experiment class was 66.1. Therefore, hypothesis H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. It concluded that ice breaking was effective in teaching English learning toward the students’ motivation for the first grade of SMP Nurul Jadid. Thus, this research make students be enjoy, be active, energize, feeling happiness, interactive in the classroom, stay in the class during learning process, and focus on the material.

Abstract

This research was desiderated to analyze error pronunciation in spelling words by three classes of MA Plus Al-Mashduqiah students (10th grade-12th grade) Patokan Kraksaan. The error pronunciation occurred as the usual sense in pronouncing the words that not only happen in 10th grade but also in 11th and 12th grade. In order to get data, the participants were given word lists that contained several words and then ordered to pronounce them one by one. These words chose to suspect the common mistakes pronounced by participants. For instance, the word ‘flood’ is pronounced the same as the word ‘door’, the word ‘examine’ is pronounced the same as ‘mine’. Then, an in-depth investigation was used to find out the learners’ consideration pronouncing the words. The result discovered that the learners tended to pronounce the words that referred to other words that contained the same orthography. Using cross-section design, this research randomly selected 60 students. This research found that there were significant gradations among the groups. The amount of error pronunciation was in line with the level of those three groups. The highest error found in 10th grade as new students in that school.

Abstract

This is a literature study on how to improve the quality of English language teaching and learning. Teaching, in general, can give one daily an unbelievable roller coaster ride from the depths of total frustration to the heights of incredible rewards. Teaching is a profession that is given little respect and lots of criticism. English language teaching and learning is an educational process. It requires great preparation and implementation to maintain the interaction between teacher and students. Apart from this, the teacher needs to be skillful in identifying the needs that should be fulfilled and the objectives which should be achieved. Teacher perspective needs to orient itself to the teaching and learning activities that cover selection on the instructional materials being inline with the instructional objectives, approaches, methods, techniques, and suitable tasks and exercises. The study indicates that good English teaching and learning is tied not only to the subject matter in hand but also to the perspective of teaching that upholds the learner-oriented standpoint. It is strongly suggested that English language teaching and learning needs to do more on psycho-motoric domains, in the sense that it encourages students to do more practice in their learning.This is a literature study on how to improve the quality of English language teaching and learning. Abstract

This study employed descriptive qualitative design to obtain the data since this method focused on the result, not by the number of the subject. It was just by the real condition when the researcher conducted the research. This thesis identified, classified, and described the differences between Probolinggonese and Madurese dialect. In collecting the data, the researcher used some techniques, those were observation and interview. The result of research showed that there were differences in pronunciation, lexically, and syntactical between Probolinggonese and Madurese dialect. The differences of phonological was proved in pronunciation vowels a,i,u,e,o and some consonant differences. In the lexical point of view, it was proved based on pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, noun, and conjunction. From syntactical point of view, Probolinggonese and Madurese dialects had adding suffix, affix, and intrusive sound.

Abstract

The role of students in Indonesia is needed, especially their ideas and opinions to develop this country. The quality of human resources is certainly very relevant to students' interest in reading. Reading habits are not only related to the teaching and learning process, but also can shape the personality of an individual by living the reading results. The research aims to study the process of reading habits and reading preferences favored by students. The research method used was a descriptive survey involving 45 students of non-English students in Az-Zainiyah Nurul Jadid. In obtaining data to find out the problems faced by students in understanding English reading texts, a questionnaire was used relating to reading habits and reading preferences. The findings from this study are expected to be used as an evaluation material that reading skills also need to be introduced further to students so that they can use them in the reading process.

Abstract

Abstract. The main feature of the research discusses the adultery on Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale in Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. Adultery is caused by several things and has impact to the doers. The research purposed is to find out the factors cause adultery done by the two main characters and the impacts on the doers. The research is qualitative research. Therefore, it applies descriptive method since the writer describes the analysis based on the data and the theories. The research uses psychological approach that just focuses on the psychological condition of adultery’s doers. The data are collected from the original text of The Scarlet Letter, then analyzed in terms of factors and impacts of adultery. The result of the research was clearly found and explained that the act of adultery is caused by several things, namely need of safety, need of affection, need of love and belongingness, and need of sex. while its impacts make the doers experience certain psychological conditions, these are esteem need, psychotic anxiety, safety need, develop superego, neurotic anxiety, mental disorder, and psychosomatic illness . The act of adultery makes the doers have different conflicts because they have different ways in facing the impacts of adultery. Hester has external conflict  such as conflict with the society, magistrates, her husband, and her child. While Dimmesadle has internal conflict  such as double avoidance conflict, double approach conflict, and approach avoidance conflict.

Abstract

Eco Criticism or known as Literary Ecology which was popularized by Greg Gerrad has become a rare scientific discourse if it synergizes with the Indonesian character of education which is one of the educational pillars of the ministry of education. The resonance of these two scientific clumps between environment and literature to be the main topic promoted to realize the value of character education no 16 which is concerned about environment. To achieve this goal, this research using research and development by Plomp in order to form a form of book materials of Eco criticism as applied literary in education. The results obtained in the application of the ecological characteristics of literature which include the main elements, namely Pollution, Position, Pastoral, Wilderness, Apocalypse, Dwelling, Animal, Future the earth in a form of field test for students are 87.42 and expert validation 92.3%, media 95, 3%, and 92.3% language in the course of literary theory and appreciation of English language education, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Majapahit Islamic University of Mojokerto.

Abstract

          ABSTRACTThis research aimed to investigate the use of teaching vocabulary using Scrabble Game on the students’ achievement. The method applied in this research is Pre-experimental research. Pre-experimental research use three group Pre-test and Post-test. The sample of this research is the first grade students of SMP Negeri 1 sungai Raya Kepulauan.The experimental group was given a pre-test consisted 20 items of test (that was initially tried out before at the same class). After the Pre-test was done, it was continued with three times of treatments where the researcher used 20 words as the screabble material, antonym and synonym words. After the treatments were given, a Post-test with the same test items was administered. The result of Pre-test and Post-test were calculated and compared to determine significant increase by using the matched t-test formula. The research finding the t observed value is 3.66 indicated that the treatments have an effect on performance. Since the value of the observed t value is 3.66 exceeds the t critical value of 2.262 at the intersection of 9 df and .05, it shows that the students’ scores differ significantly from Pre-test to Post-test. This research shows that teaching vocabulary using scrabble game increases the students’ achievement onvocabulary. Scrabble game is basically suggested and considered good and appropriate as technique at teaching vocabulary.Keywords : scrabble game, vocabulary, pre experimental.
