Abstract

This study was going to discuss the cultural competence of EFL students and the strategies used to translate idioms by them since many previous studies discussed the translation of idioms, however they did not focus on how they are related to culture. The method applied of this study was descriptive qualitative to emphasize in explaining, describing, and understanding the context of the discussion. The results indicated that there were four strategies the learners used to transfer idioms, namely using idioms with the same meaning but different form, paraphrasing, omitting of a play on idioms, and omitting the entire idioms. Six of seven idioms could be rendered accurately by most of EFL students. Thus, they were considered as able to have cultural competence in translating idioms. The idiom itself is an expression whose meaning cannot be translated literally where they are affected by the cultural development of languages. A translator needs to have competence on culture to translate idioms, likewise EFL students who interact directly with translation activities.

Abstract

The Self-Access Center (SAC) is one of the infrastructures for realizing the self-access approach as one of the modes of learning beyond the classroom (LBC) that is essential to the manifestation of the student-centered approach in language education. This study looked at the target needs of English department students for independent learning using SAC resources and their learning needs for independent learning using SAC activities. There were 51 university students participated in the study using a mix of questionnaire and interview data collection techniques. The study revealed that the student's primary necessity for autonomous learning resources of SAC was materials for specific English skills out of the classroom supported with the use of sufficient internet resources and a native speaker as a resource. It is to fulfill their short and long terms goals to attend in SAC. It was also discovered that the students preferred individual reading, free writing, native American speaker advisors, and listening activities. Vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar need to be progressively integrated into these programs since many of them wish to be overseen by Native American speakers, notably for the American English pronunciation model, and non-native speakers for English grammar.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how university students perform peer computer-mediated corrective feedback. This study is conducted qualitatively through the students' essay analysis and interview to briefly overview how the students perform peer computer-mediated corrective feedback. The sixteen participants, who have conducted peer computer-mediated corrective feedback in an exemplification writing class, are from one of the state universities in Surabaya. The study's results revealed that not all types of peer computer-mediated corrective feedback were conducted by the students. Most of the students give feedback starting from the aspects they believe they can do. They start it by reading the whole essay and moving on to the aspects of writing they check. The students who have less confidence in a particular aspect of writing do not provide the aspect of writing they do not believe they are able to. This leads to the students using another software to assist them in giving feedback to their peers. Moreover, the students are depending on their lecturer's instruction in giving feedback thus the role of lecturers in giving feedback literacy is important in purpose to increase the student's productivity in giving feedback. In conclusion, this study suggests the students' feedback literacy needs to be boosted through their lecturers. The findings highlight the way students perform peer computer-mediated corrective feedback.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether e-learning of Google Classroom can improve the basic English translation skills of PAI’s students STAI Auliaurrasyidin Tembilahan, as well as to determine their perception of use. The ability to translate is one of the important skills that must be mastered by students in the current era of globalization. However, many students face difficulties in understanding and transferring the meaning from English to Indonesian correctly. The CAR design (Classroom Action Research) was chosen for the design of this research. This study consisted of two cycles, each cycle involving planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. This research located at STAI Auliaurrasyidin Tembilahan, Indragiri Hilir Riau, 19 Participants of the third semester class III/B Department of Islamic Education (PAI) STAI Auliaurrasyidin Tembilahan during the Odd Academic Year 2021/2022. The Data were collected using test, observation, fieldnote, and questionnaire. A questionnaire was used to answer students' perception on google classroom and was adapted from the TAM (Technology Acceptance Model) model introduced by Davis in 1986. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed that there were students’ improvements in basic English Translation. The pre-cycle "accurate" category obtained an average of 1.7 and continued to increase in the second cycle with an average of 2.8 and continued to increase to 2.9 at the end of the cycle. The average of the four TAM indicators scored at 89%, which falls between 81% and 100%, indicates that students also have a positive opinion of Google Classroom.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is the ability to comprehend the text. One of the factors that may affect it is reading fluency. Readers who can identify the words accurately and automatically may help to focus most of their attention on reading comprehension. Therefore, this study investigated the correlation between reading fluency and students’ reading comprehension. This research used 64 7th-grade students as participants. Two instruments were used; a reading fluency test (CBM) and a reading comprehension test. This study showed 41 students were categorized as high risk (64%) in reading fluency. In reading comprehension, 27 students scored 56 – 70 (M = 60.0781), meaning that most students’ reading comprehension skills were moderate. Then, the result of Pearson Product Moment showed that there is no relationship between reading fluency and students’ reading comprehension at the Junior High School level (p–value = 0.102) since students are still trying to improve their reading skills. Then, students may feel anxiety about doing oral performance.

Abstract

This mix method study investigated the correlation among students’ perception on collaborative writing (SPoCW), students’ self-efficacy (SSE) and students’ writing achievement (SWA). The quantitative data of the study was gained from 62 students who have been taught using collaborative writing during one semester. The data included the students’ perception on collaborative writing questionnaire adapted from [1]. The questionnaire consisted of 18 statements with a five Likert scales. The reliability is 0.892. While students’ self-efficacy is measured using self efficacy questionnaire consists of 23 statements adopted from [2] with the reliability is 0.80. Using correlation Pearson Product Moment, It was found that SPoCW correlated with SSE and the score is 0.377. To investigate the correlation between independent variable (SPoCW and SSE) and dependent variable (SWA), the researcher used Analysis Model Summary, it showed that R Square value is 0.394. This mean that the effect of SPoCW and SSE toward students writing achievement is 39.4 % and the rest is influenced by another factor. While to get qualitative data, semi structure interview was randomly given to the students and it was revealed that mostly students felt confident and had a new writing experience with collaborative writing which strengthen the investigation. It is recommended to build good students’ perception and self-efficacy for best writing achievement.
