Based on the data, the writer finds out four types of students’ difficulties; they are difficulty in changing the position of subject and object, difficulty in determining appropiate auxiliary verb used, difficulty in determining which sentence can be changed into passive and difficulty in deciding the past participle. The causes also are found of two factors are internal factors such as first, students’ motivation; second, students’ intelligence and aptitude; at the last, students’ personality and learning style. Besides, external factors such as the material, the facility and atmosphere, as well as the lecturer’s explanation. The most factor that causes students’ difficulties are students’ motivation (internal factor) and lecturer’s explanation (external factor). As suggestions, students must increase their motivation especially internal motivation, basic skills in English grammar especially tenses then more pay attetion to the lecturer’s explanation and always ask the lecturer to minimize the difficulties.

Abstract

Classroom action research is undoubtedly important to be implemented by teachers. Many experts on education have provided enormous rationale bases for the benefits of conducting action research for quality education. However, there have not been many teachers performing it with many different reasons. It is important for any parties who are concerned on quality education to find out teachers’ reasons of not conducting action research. The data could be used to formulate any strategies to promote action research in school practice. However, this paper suggests that finding out why teachers perform action research is not less important. Teachers’ motives of performing action research cannot be separated from the values proposed by idealized concept of action research itself.  Thus it is important to examine closely whether teachers’ perspectives meet with the intended benefits as proposed theoretically.  The findings are useful to give an insight on whether action research needs to be redefined and repositioned in educational practice.

Abstract

In this region, English is mostly learned as the main subject. It starts from elementary school to university level, but most high school graduates cannot speak English even though they have been studying it for three years or more. This stimulated the researcher to create a breakthrough that would make it easier for students to practice their speaking skills as much as possible. The programs consisted of three activities: discussion (hot issues talk), debate forum, and speech presentation. Participants in this study were 50 second-year high school students in Indonesia. They were divided into two groups: experimental and control classes. The experimental class consisted of 25 students who engaged in public speaking activities, while the control class consisted of 25 students who did not participate. The findings of this quantitative analysis showed that members of the experimental class who engaged in public speaking exercises experienced an increase in their English-speaking skills. It can be discovered that public speaking activities can be used as an approach to enhancing the ability of high school students to speak.

Abstract

Stick to the required rules and standards of multiple choice test assessment, the study seeks to analyze the multiple choice test questions administered for Indonesian EFL learners at a junior high school. A careful analysis was given to the items of a summative multiple choice of English midterm test. Using the classical test theory (CTT) in analyzing each test item, it was found that only 23 percent of the total of the analyzed items are acceptable or have adopted the standards or the rules required. There are two identified major problems or causes to the poor quality of the test: distractor plausibility and limitedness in the number of possible options or distractors. To deal with the problems, the study suggests the using of fewer possible options or alternatives for such test for better assessment.
