Abstract

The implementation of genre-based approach in EFL teaching has been increasingly attracting many EFL teachers’ attention. This study aimed at investigating the implementation of Ganre-Based Approach in teaching and learning process of speaking skill at SMPN 1 Gamping Yogyakarta. This study was descriptive qualitative. The techniques of collecting the data were observation, interviews and documentation. The data was analyzed by referring to theory of the stages of genre-based approach developed by Hammond et al., (1992). The total of the sample of this study was 28 students in the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Gamping Yogyakarta. The findings showed that the English teacher still had some weakness in implementing genre-based approach. Moreover, the students still had many difficulties in generic structure and social function of the text.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the effect of type of students’learning styles in reading comprehension achievement. The design of the research was a descriptive quantitative research that used a case study design. A total of 20 students of reading class on the second semester of IAIN Metro was sample of this research. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire of learning style and reading comprehension test. In the analysis of data, the writer classified the categorization of learning style from the questionnaire and the scores of reading comprehension tests. Then, the result was analyzed by comparing the mean score in test manually using by percentage correct. The finding of the research the students have three types of learning style, they are visual (45%), auditory (30%), and kinesthetic (25%), in which visual is the most dominant. whereas the result of reading comprehension test, the mean score of visual is 79.2, auditory is 70.8, and kinesthetic is 65. In conclusion, It showed that the students of reading class on second semester of IAIN Metro used three types of learning style, but visual learning style is the most dominant learning style the students have.

Abstract

English has become one of the most-frequently used languages at an international level. As a matter of fact English is learned by many people, both adults and young learners. With regard to young learners of English in particular, they are learning English because they want (or they are encouraged) to master English when they are still in their early childhood. Compared to adults, young learners are more likely to achieve automaticity in producing English as a second language (ESL).This research was aimed to see a seven-year-old girl‟s English vocabulary acquisition process that she got from her mother, as the researcher. This research was also aimed to see her English vocabulary production that she produced for almost three months.

Abstract

This study is aimed to improve the students’ skill in writing a recount text through the use of discussion board. The subject consists of twenty seven eighth graders. This study was carried out in one cycle. The cycle consisted of five meetings including the registration process on discussion board, prewriting and drafting in face to face classroom environment, and the process of revising, editing and publishing stage on discussion board. The data of the study were taken from the observation checklist, field notes, questionnaire and the students’ final product. The findings of the study revealed that the discussion board was successful in improving the skill in writing a recount text of the eighth graders. The improvement was indicated by the increase of the students’ writing scores, the students’ participation in writing activities and the students’ positive responses after the implementation of discussion board.

Abstract

This study aims at providing a comprehensive account of analyzing error in second language learners. For this purpose, an empirical study was conducted, using Indonesian students learning English as the research subject, especially among students of international program of Muhammadiyah University Surakarta. The researcher explored the type of errors made by students at different proficiency levels: high, medium, and low level. This study uses error analysis as methodological framework. More specifically, this study was an attempt to describe the type of grammatical error which frequently exist in written production, to describe frequency grammatical error among proficiency levels, and to describe the students’ understanding of errors. Students’ writings were analyzed for errors based on surface strategy taxonomy. The results of this research revealed that 846 sentences indicated errors. Types of omission error was the highest one 322 (37.9%) sentences. Afterward, grammatical error in low proficiency level was the highest one 322 (37.9%) sentences. The second was high proficiency level 276 (32.6%) sentences. The third was medium proficiency level 248 (29.3%) sentences. Most of the students didn’t understand about grammatical errors, because through students’ interview only 7 students were able to change grammatical error to be good sentences.

Abstract

This descriptive-qualitative research investigated the modulation phenomena and measured the accuracy level of the phenomena occurring in the translated text. It involved 40 students at the fifth semester of English education program in STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro. The data were taken from each participant‟s translated texts using observation and documentation. The kinds of text are scientific and literary texts. Both texts contain 20 modulation phenomena. All of the phenomena were analyzed by comparing the proper translation text with the translated text produced by the students and then measured in the term of accuracy level. The researcher found 11 Fixed Modulation (FM) and 9 Optional Modulation (OM). In the term of accuracy, the FM is more accurate than OM but OM has a lower inaccurate level than FM has. Related to the accuracy percentage of all phenomena, there are 16% categorized as accurate, 39% as less accurate, and 45% as inaccurate. In conclusion, the students are still lack of the accuracy in modulation so that they should be able to let themselves free from influential factors of the source language structure and to express natural and equivalent translation in target language.

Abstract

This paper aimed to show the EFL classroom activities for children with hearing impairment conducted by the teacher, the teacher’s consideration in designing and implementing the EFL classroom activities, and challenges faced by the teacher in developing EFL classroom activities. The study was qualitative in nature. The data collected through observation, interview, and documentation. Additionally, this paper applied Miles and Huberman model to analyze the research data through some steps, namely, data reduction, data display and drawing a conclusion. In this research, the researcher observed the teaching process and interview the English teacher for children with hearing impairment at the eighth graders of SLB (Education of physically and mentally handicapped children) Negeri Metro. The results indicated that the teacher designed, and implemented the EFL classroom activities based on the students’ characteristics, needs, and abilities such as selecting the activity which provides instruments especially visual supports, modifying the classroom environment. Moreover, the teacher also faced the children’s limitations as her challenges but she had her own way to overcome the challenges such as giving a simple and easy activity and maximum visual supports to the students in the activity.

Abstract

This research was aimed to investigate the strategies used by the teachers in correcting the students’ errors in classroom interaction. The research was conducted at ten States Junior High Schools of Payakumbuh, West Sumatera consisted of one classroom for each school. The subject of the research was the ten teachers and all the students who were exist in those ten classrooms. This research was descriptive qualitative with the classroom interaction analysis. The finding of this research were (1) the errors which most frequently made by the students were vocabulary error. (2) The teacher used some different strategies in correcting the students’ error. However, the strategies which the most frequently used were explicit correction and recast. (3) The students’ preference was on explicit correction, metalinguistic feedback and clarification request. (4) The commonly reason of teachers tend to use the certain strategies in correcting the students’ error was because the teacher consider that the oral error correction was the effective way to communicate and help the students improve their speaking skill. Besides, the teachers know the level of students’ understanding, condition, and the ability in receiving what the teachers gave.

Abstract

Abstract

This study is conducted to describe the process of developing of android software system which contains the terms in the sharia economics field in three languages (Arabic, English, and Indonesia) for the students of Islamic Economics and Business Faculty. The study used to research and development methodology. The steps comprised: a preliminary study, making the product, validation of the product and try out the product. Before making the product, the researcher conducted a preliminary study to the students which the result was the students need a specific tool to ease them in learning the terms. After the product was made, the researcher then tried out the product to the students. To evaluate the product, the researcher then distributes the questionnaires through an online survey to the students to find out their opinion about the product. The result of the questionnaires showed that most of the students satisfied with the product. In conclusion, the android software is very promising to be used as supporting tooling learning.
