CALL is a journal that presents Critical Analysis on Language and literature. This journal focuses on the analysis of text scrutinized by theories from linguistics, literary analysis, discourse analysis, to critical theories. This journal accepted the analysis of text of any language, especially, Indonesian, Malay, Arabic, English, indigenous and modern languages. The official language of this journal is English. The management of journal CALL has been arranged since 2018 but the journal was first published online for Vol. 1, No. 1, in June 2019. This is a biannual journal published in June and December by Program Studi Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Adab dan Humaniora, UIN SUnan Gunung Djati Bandung.

Abstract

This research analyzes women‘s issues in The Da Vinci Code novel by Dan Brown. In the novel there is a female character named Sophie Neveu . Sophie's role as a woman who can be relied upon in various situations makes her considered as woman who carries the spirit of feminism. The researchers decided to examine the role of Sophie Neveu as reflection of women's equality in The Da Vinci Code novel. The main theory used is Liberal Feminism by Betty Friedan. The form used in this research is qualitative and descriptive method in process of data analysis. The results of the discussion of this research are 1). Sophie Neveu play eleven roles of masculine qualities i.e. strong woman, competitive, courageous, unyielding, confident, independent, adventurous, aggressive, assertive, intelligent and generally acting as leaders, and; 2). The factors that make Sophie Neveu able to play this role is the background of her education. The conclusions of this research are masculine characteristics that can be owned by women and men, to become advanced individuals, women as part of the community must have equal opportunities as men in getting equal education, and the last that education is very important.Keywords: Characterization, Women‘s issues, Women equality, Liberal feminism, Masculine qualities

Abstract

The study is conducted based on qualitative research design with descriptive analysis. The data are 67 passive construction in Indonesian and English as used in the novel “9 Summers 10 Autumns (Dari Kota Apel ke The Big Apple)” and translated into “9 Summers 10 Autumns (From the City of Apples to the Big Apple). The research problems are the first what are the corresponding equivalents of Indonesian passive in English as used in the Novel 9 Summers 10 Autumns and its translation, the second what is the translation method or procedure that used in the process of passive voice translation. The steps and procedures of discovering the answer to the both of research problems are shown under the discussion of research method which includes: (1) the data source, (2) method and technique of collecting the data consisting of observation method and note-taking technique; (3) method and technique of analyzing the data. The results of the study show that among the passive in Indonesian which can be identified in SL, most are marked by prefix di- (prefix di- + verb base) and (prefix di-+ verb base + suffix –kan, -i) which are also translated into passive in English (be+past participle ) with four types namely to infinitive translation, by agent translation (stated and implied) and the rest translated into active. This clearly reveals that some passives in SL are retained, namely translated into passive in English and some others are translated into actives. Second, from the whole data analysis the researcher found 4 types of translation methods or procedures used in the passive translation, namely literal translation, transposition, modulation, and adaptation.Keywords: Passive voice, translation procedures, novel

Abstract

This research tells about translation method of preposition. Preposition is the word that simple to translated, but it is complicate to find the good word, because there are so many meaning in dictionary. Even the translator does not always get the meaning from dictionary. This purpose of research is analyzing the translation of simple and complex preposition used in “J.D. Salinger’s Novel The Catcher in The Rye. And to find out the kinds of translation methods in translating of simple and complex preposition on it. The method of research uses descriptive qualitative method. Technique of collecting data, the researcher uses documentation. Technique of analyzing data, the researcher uses constant comparative method by Glaser and Strauss with four steps are data reduction, data categorization, data synthetization and hypothesis. The result of research is translator use four translation method of preposition. There are literal translation, semantic translation, free translation and communicative translation. mostly translator uses literal translation. Preposition has many meaning in dictionary, that’s why there are no word-for-word because researcher things that translator is process the translation of preposition. There are many kinds of preposition. The researcher dividing become two parts, are simple and complex (Randolph Quirk,1985). Simple preposition mostly available than complex in the novel. Abstract

This research analyzes the comparison of intrinsic elements in the novel and the movie script The Hobbit. this work tells about unexpected adventures. A long journey is one of man's biggest dreams. Break away from the comfort of life, explore the uncharted world, without a definite purpose and guarantee a safe return. This is what make decided them Bilbo, Gandalf, and thirteen Dwarves to meet Smaug, the giant dragon inhabiting the Silent Mountain. In this research, researchers used the Racmat Ddjoko Pradopo theory. Pradopo explained that structuralism is a structure with elements that are closer and every element that has meaning in relation to other elements. The researcher used the comparative method because the object under study was a comparative literary work. In analyzing the data, the researcher analyzed the quotes in the novel that were in accordance with the topic and also the theory used. This study aims to analyze the similarities and differences in intrinsic elements in the novels and scripts of the film The Hobbit. it can be seen that the intrinsic element plays an important role in building the story so that it is conveyed by the reader.Keywords: The Hobbit, Structuralism, Intrinsic Elements, Comparative Studies, Similarities and Differences.

Abstract

Prepositional Phrase is the part of preposition and absolutely it is the part of grammar too. It has rules and deregulations that must be obeyed. Without a correct replacement of preposition, the meaning of the sentence can make the people confused. Hence, the research questions of this research are: 1) What are the positions of prepositions phrase of sentences found in Novel The Perfect Nany written by Leila Slimani?. 2) What are the patterns of tree diagram for a prepositional phrase of sentences found in Novel The Perfect Nany written by Leila Slimani?. The researcher use Position of Prepositional Phrase theory by Frank (1972) and theory of a tree diagram by Delahunty and Garvey (2010) to analyze the data. The findings show that the position of prepositional phrase in novel The Perfect Nany written by Leila Slimani is dominated by position in adverbial function (34 data). And the position in adjectival function is only found with 16 data. Base on the data analysis, it can be concluded that prepositional phrase adverbial function is more widely used than prepositional phrase adjectival function, because it can modify the verb, adverb, and adjectival that are mostly found in sentences. It is was also concluded that in one sentence there could be more than one prepositional phrase through the tree diagram that have been analyzed.Key words: Prepositional Phrase, Adverbial Function, Adjectival Function

Abstract

Racism is a belief or ideology that all members of each racial groups possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially to distinguish it as being either superior or inferior to another racial group. Continuation of a racism is stereotype. Stereotypes are generalized because one assumes that the stereotype is true for each individual person in the category. Literary works applying this concept in many worked and one of them is film. Therefore, the writer is interested in discussing the mentioned topic with objective of the research: To identify how racism constructed in Get Out movie and to analyze the stereotype of racism appeared in Get Out movie. The method used in this research is sociology of literature, because it is appropriate to analyze literary work which focused on the racism attitude in Get Out movie script. The grand theory for the topic is Racism a Short History by George M. Fredrickson and Stereotype as Explanations by Craig McGarty. While the object of this research is Get Out movie script by Jordan Peele. The result of data analysis show that racism constructed by three elements there are dialog, characterization and plot. And stereotype of racism that appeared in Get Out movie is discrimination, prejudice and violence. From the finding of data analysis, it can be concluded that the result of the research is that Get Out movie have a racism content with suitable features that match with the theory. Therefore, it is clear and not surprising if the work indeed has the impression of “racist”, since most of literary work with racism issue does have that kind of impression to the readers or the spectators.Keywords: racism, sociology of literature, movie script

Abstract

Of Mice and Men is a novel written by John Steinbeck,  published in 1937. It tells about the story of George Milton and Lenny Small, two displaced migrant ranch workers, who move from place to lace in California in searching of a new job opportunities during the Great Depression in the United States. The novel is translated to Indonesian by Pramoedya Ananta Toer in “Tikus dan Manusia. So, it seems fun to analyse how the translator transfer meaning from source language to target language, especially in translating swearword which is found in the novel. The researcher used Hudges’s (1991) theory about swearword and Molina and Albir (2005), and Fawcet(1997) about translation techniques used by the translator. From the analysis, the researcher found 9 data of imbecile term for nuts, cuckoo, and ain’t bright, 23 data general terms for bastard and crazy, 39 data of death terms for the hell and goddamn, 6 data of mother in law terms for son of bitch, 1 data of racist for Nigger, 3 data of animal terms of rats, chicken, and cat, and 6 data of sexual irregulities for tart and bitch. It is also, 5 kinds of swearword translation techniques in the research, they are 9 data of literal translation, 1 data of particularization, 1 data of reduction, 3 data of transposition and 1 data of adaptation

Abstract

This research analyzes the elements of personality in the main character of Sweeney Todd: The Demon of Barber of Fleet Street by Tim Burton. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative methods because the results of this research are words which are then described. In this research, the reseacher found the elements of personality in the main character of Sweeney Todd: The Demon of Barber of Fleet Street by Tim Burton such as Todd id as the desire wants to revenge Turpin and Beadle because of what they did to Todd’s family, the desire wants to kill Pirelli because he knew his the real identity, and the desire wants to kill Mrs. Lovett because she lied him. The desires as Todd’s id realized and supported by the ego. The way how ego realized all of id in Sweeney Todd, the ego does his role with an action. Thus the superego does not appear much as the id. His role only related with a good value such as when Todd wants to reveal the fake barber about his crime.Keywords: Sweeney Todd, id, ego, superego.

Abstract

The research is a pragmatic study on positive politeness strategies employed by the main characters in “ Greatest Showman” and “Chappie” films in the context of differences certain the century society. the researcher use Brown and Levinson’s theory of positive politeness theory. Politeness is the way of self strategies in communication to others, in order to received their meanings well. The objectives of this research are to find out the types of positive politeness strategies by main character in the setting 19th Century society (Greatest Showman film) and 21st  Century setting society (Chappie film) and to find out factors affecting main character to choice that strategies. The researcher used a qualitative method since the data engaged are displayed in the form of strings of words. The result shows that Phineas in “Greatest Showman” that can be conclude  in 19th century society, generally showed social class, kept family relation well, and respected for abnormal people. Diffrent with Deon in “Chappie” film that can be conclude in 21st century society, people concern with technology development, a lot of gangster who do the crime, and people communicate only in certain interests.Keywords: Pragmatics, Politeness Strategy, Movie Script

Abstract

Advertisement is a persuasive media aimed to persuading and influencing the public. Every day, advertisement can be found anywhere, such as in newspaper, television, radio, and also magazine. Pantene is a shampoo product that is very famous especially among women. Its advertisement can be found almost in every media. In this research, the researcher focuses on the semiotics elements found on Pantene advertisement using Charles Sanders Pierce’s theory. The problem in this research then formulated into three questions: (1) How is the process symbol of shampoo advertisement in each text of tagline (2) How is the process of triadic relation in each picture on shampoo advertisement. (3) How are the relation between the text and its picture on every shampoo advertisement. This research used Peirce theory of semiotic to analyze Pantene advertisement. Based on Pierce theory of semiotics, there are representament, object and interpretant. This research uses qualitative method because the data consist of words and pictures. The data of this research are taken from online media. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzes the data about how is the process symbol of shampoo advertisement in each text of tagline, how is the process of triadic relation in each picture on shampoo advertisement, and how are the relation between the text and its picture on every shampoo advertisement using Pierce’s theory. The result of this research shows that both the symbol and also the picture on the Pantene’s advertisement have representament, object, and interpretant. The representament is something that enters into relation with its object, the second component of the sign, the object is something beyond the sign to which it refers, and interpretant is a concept of thinking from the people who use a sign and give it special meaning which is referred by the sign. By using many different of pictures on the advertisement, it will make people easier to understand and make them more interested to the product.Key words: Semiotic, Triadic Relation, Advertisement, Shampoo, Beauty.
