Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the students' problems in the listening section of TOEFL in English Education Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar. This study was qualitative research. The Research subjects were 12 students who had undertaken TOEFL test from English Education Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar. The instrument was an interview guideline. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman analysis. This research indicated that the students encountered three problems in the listening section of TOEFL. The first problem was listening to material such as unfamiliar words, grammar structure, vocabulary, pronunciation, speech speed, and long-spoken text. The second was the listener's personal problems, such as feeling worried, losing concentration, unclear pronunciation, and encountering an unknown word. The third was the environmental situation, such as the noise around and the low quality of the recording.

Abstract

AbstractThis research was aimed to know the students’ perception on the English teachers’ performance in teaching at the second grade students of Madrasah Tsanawiyh in kecamatan Somba Opu Gowa English at several schools of Madrasah Tsanawiyah in Gowa Regency. The researcher used descriptive quantitative in acquiring the result of questionnaire, which aimed to find out the students’ perception on English teachers’ performance of each Madrasah Tsanawiyah at kecamatan Somba Opu Gowa. The samples of this research were the second grade students of each school which totally consisted of 120 students and the English teachers of each school which consisted of 8 teachers. These schools were MTs. Guppi, MTs. Ashshaihin, MTs. Madani, MTs. Bani rauf, MTs. Manggaruppi, MTs. Nurfadilah, MTs. Syekh Yusuf and MTs. Aisyiyah. The instruments of this research was questionnaire. The questionnaire was used to know how the students’ perception was based on Engish teachers performance in teaching. The findings of this research showed that the mean score of students’perception on teachers’ performance in teaching English at Madrasah Tsanawiyah in kecamatan Somba Opu Gowa was in interval scale between 145.78-157.332 which means “Positive Perception”.Those results indicated that the English teachers’ performance in teaching were qualified good category, which the mean score of Students’ perception was 45.83%. Based on the results of this research, the researcher found that English Teachers’ Performance on teaching at Madrasah Tsanawiyah in kecamatan Somba Opu obtained positive perception. Therefore, it was suggested that teachers should present good material to make the students more interested in learning, because the teaching material influenced to the students understanding. The teachers also had to know what students’ difficulties in learning English are, and help to solve their problem. Furthermore, the teachers should also apply games more in teaching. Abstract

Hybrid or blended learning is an alternative method during Covid-19 Pandemic. In this context, flex model blended learning is one of the ways for handling teaching and learning processes because it can be done without face-to-face interaction. This narrative research aims to investigating the challenges and opportunities of pre-service English teacher in implementing flex model on blended learning teaching. The data was collected through interview. This research was conducted to five Pre-service’s English teachers at University in Karawang who conduct online teaching in various public schools. The findings revealed that there are some challenges and opportunities appeared while implementing flex model blended learning. The challenges were low media utilization, low connectivity, disordered time allocation and low student interaction. Furthermore, the opportunities of flex model blended learning were resources and flexibility. This research is expected to help pre-service’s English teacher, English teachers, student and school to be better in implementing flex model blended learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate instructors' pedagogical proficiency in the teaching of English. Three MA NW Aik Bukak, Lombok, English teachers were involved as the subjects in this research. Qualitative research was conducted through observations and interviews to find out the data. Qualitative analysis was also done by categorizing the findings from observation and interview. The interview was used to determine the pedagogical proficiency of teachers in the English teaching at MA NW Aik Bukak, and the observations were utilized to observe the process of teaching and learning English in the classroom. The results of this study demonstrated that teachers’ pedagogical competence was rated as good revealed in the 18 indicators of pedagogical competence. Additionally, the MA NW Aik Bukak teachers' pedagogical proficiency in teaching English was also considered sufficient confirmed from the interview. Researchers advised the teachers to take an attempt to enhance their strategies and competency before and while teaching. They must also employ some engaging techniques in order to increase students' enthusiasm and motivation in learning English.

Abstract

Writing is seen as a difficult skill that persists among the students which affected the students' writing test scores and lack enthusiasm in writing. From this primary issue, an effective tool is needed in learning both inside and outside the classroom, one of which is the use of Instagram which is collaborated in learning to write. So, this study aimed to investigate students' enthusiasm in using Instagram as a learning tool for text-writing. This study used quantitative research as its method and the instrument used in this research was questionnaires. The population of this study was students at SMA KARTIKA XX-I Makassar and the number of samples were 28 students to gain the data needed. The analysis of the data shows that students got 32% in the interested classification and 68% in strongly interested. So, it can be said students might more enthusiasm for writing by using Instagram as a social media platform.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the effectiveness of YouTube Music Video in teaching transactional speaking skills at the second grade of SMA Negri 3 Sinjai Timur. The pre-experimental research with pre-test and post-test was implemented as the design of the research. The population of this research was the second-grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Sinjai Timur who enrolled in the academic year 2020/2021 consist of 30 students. The technique sampling used in this research was random sampling. The sample of this research is class XI MIA 2 consists of 15 students, the instrument used to collect data was the speaking test. The data were analysed by descriptive and inferential technique statistic. The result of the research presented that the pre-test of the class got a mean score of 31.26. After giving treatment the students got a mean score of 62.86. The outcome of the data analysis revealed that there was a significant improvement in students’ transactional speaking skills using YouTube Music Video. Subsequently, it was also supported by the result of one sample t-test where Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 < 0.05. This implies that the treatment had a significant main effect on the students’ transactional speaking skills achievement. Therefore the null (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Based on the result analysis, the researcher may conclude that using YouTube Music Video was effective to improve the students Transactional Speaking skills especially at Class XI MIA 2 at SMA Negeri 3 Sinjai Timur.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the effectiveness of using picture series in teaching writing narrative text. The research problem is “To what extent is the use of picture series effective in teaching writing narrative text to the first year students at MAN 1 Makassar”. It is quasi-experimental research. The population is 439 students.The researcher uses purposive sampling technique in selecting the sample. The sample of this research is consisted of 79 students which divide into X MIA 1 as the experimental class and X MIA 2 as the controlled class. The data collection procedures is conducted by giving pre-test, treatment and post-test. In the first meeting, the researcher gives pre-test. Treatment is conducted by teaching narrative text using picture series in the experimental class which took six times meeting. The controlled class and experimental class are taught the same topic of narrative text. In the last meeting, the researcher gives post-test. The data is analyzed by using SPSS. The research findings shows that students obtain score on pre-test with the mean score 58.60 an d on the post-test with the mean score 78.67 as good classification. It is proved by the result of the statistical analysis of the level significance 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) 38 indicated t-test values of the students’ writing narrative text (3.293) is higher than t-table value (2.024). The effectiveness of picture series also can be seen from the effectiveness test. Afterwards, the results of the test is 0.47 (R<1). Based on the result of analysis, the researcher concludes that the use of picture series is effective in writing narrative text. The researcher finds that picture series helped the students in generating ideas. It shows that picture series can be an effective media in writing narrative text.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to comprehend the phenomenon of student difficulties and the students' responses to the use of the context clues technique, particularly in translating unfamiliar words. The data were collected in the eighth grade. In five meetings, the writers taught the context clue technique to twenty-three students. The student’s difficulties were observed by the observation checklist during the teaching and learning process. The students’ responses were collected by the interview section in the last meeting. The results of the data analysis showed that the students had several difficulties, such as difficulty understanding context clues, difficulty translating the meaning of words due to a lack of vocabulary mastery, and difficulty guessing word classes. The results of the students’ responses were positive. It was demonstrated by their enthusiasm for the teaching and learning processes. They also suggested using the context clues technique in class.

Abstract

This research investigated the need of English for Islamic Education Management Department students’ at UIN Alauddin Makassar. In this study, researcher involved 44 respondents devided into 40 students, 1 lecturer, and 3 graduates. Questionnaire and Open Ended Question were employed by the researcher to collect the data. The findings show that the students' ability levels of all components of English (reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar and vocabulary) are at the 'adequate' level. The students prefer to study the components of English sequentially; (1) speaking average (3.44), (2) reading average (3.42), (3) listening average (3.42), (4) vocabulary average (3.42), (5 ) writing with an average (3.38), and (6) grammar with an average (2.77). While the problem experienced by students in learning is "Lack of learning English strategies" with the highest average score of (3.22). In addition, the most preferred learning method by students is Speaking with an average score (3.33). The students were also interested in some of the most preferred learning styles were movies and videos with an average score (3.31). Goals of this research; 1)To help students improve their English skills.2)Students have a good understanding of English language text on topics of Islamic Education Management course. Objectives of this research;(1)After learning speaking, students able to explain question about the Islamic Education Psychology precisely.(2) After learning speaking & listening, students have a good English conversation in public service management using related vocabulary precisely.(3)After learning reading,students have good comprehension to English text topic of education marketing management.(4)After learning speaking & Writing, students able to explain about Islamic Education Institution management and conclude the topic appropriately.(5)After learning English, students able to talk & classify administration of Islamic Education eccurately.(6)After learning in speaking students have good comprehension to English text of education supervision.(7)After learning speaking, students able to explain related of management information system effectively.(8)After learning English students have good conversation in discussing the most appropriate in management madrasah & give proper reason to their point of view.(9)After learning reading students have good understanding text in English about education curriculum and program management.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research focuses on the students’ Transactional Speaking especially in group discussion. The purposes of this research are (1) To find out the effectiveness of Quora Application in improving students ‘transactional speaking skill. (2) To find out the factors effect of Quora Application in improving students ‘transactional speaking skill. In this research, the population was the second grade students at Senior High School 12 Makassar consist of 15 students from class XI IPA 2. The method of this study was a Mixed Method, the design of this study was explanatory sequential (QUAN-QUAL) design were quantitative data were collected first and more heavily weighted than qualitative data. Pre-experimental method was applied in this research with a group pre-test and post-test design. The instruments used to collect data were speaking test and questionnaire. The result of the research presented that the pre-test of the class got the mean score 5.6. after giving treatment the students’ got the mean score 11.73. The outcome of the data analysis revealed that there was a significant improvement in the students’ skill in transactional speaking after being taught using quora application. Subsequently, the result of one sample t-test were Sig. (2-tailed) = 0,000 < 0,5. Therefore The null (Ho) is therefore rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. In addition, the qualitative result from the questionnaire showed there were 4 factors affecting the development of students’ transactional speaking skill in group discussion those are: teaching materials content, language items, method, and activities in the teaching process. Based on the result analysis, the researcher may conclude that using quora application is effective to improve the students’ transactional speaking skill in group discussion because the learning objective is achieved, that was the students’ can be active to discuss the topic in classroom and were able to discuss appropriately according to the standard procedures and ground rules of group discussion.
