Abstract

Crab shells contain the highest percentage of chitin. Chitin and its derivatives have many properties that make them attractive for a wide variety of applications. This study was conducted to determine the effect of crab (Portunus pelagicus) shells as a source of chitin in ration on serum cholesterol and weight gain of rats (Rattus norvegicus). The study was carried out in a factorial experiment 2 x 5 with 3 replications. The first factor is sex and the second factor is crab shells of 5 levels i.e., 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% in ration. The study showed that there were no interaction effect between sex and crab shells levels in diet on all parameters. Serum cholesterol levels decreased (P > 0.05) and weigh gain increased (P < 0.01) when crab shells were included in the diets. The highest reduction of serum cholesterol level (14,8%) was observed at crab shells level of 10%, but the highest weight gain was reached at 5% inclusion of crab shells. These results suggest that crab shells in rat diets reduced serum cholesterol level and increased weight gain. Key words: crab shells, cholesterol, gain, rat

Abstract

The limited water can cause drought stress, which can affect the growth and plant yield. One of the efforts to maintain plant water status under drought stress is by using mycorrhizal. The objective of this research was to assay the effect of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) on growth and production of Setaria splendida under drought stress. The experiment was conducted in Laboratory of Agrostology greenhouse, Faculty of Animal Science, Bogor Agricultural University. The experiment was designed in completely randomized design with two factors (2 x 5) and 3 replications. The first factor was mycorrhizal treatment (Mo= without AMF, M1 = with AMF) and the second factor was level of soil water content (A1 = 100% of field capacity, A2 = 85% of field capacity, A3 = 70% of field capacity, A4 = 55% of field capacity, A5 = 40% of field capacity). The result showed that the effect of AMF inoculation was significantly increased (P < 0.05) dry weigth of shoot and very significantly (P < 0.01) leaf area and transpiration rate. The water treatment was significantly decreased (P < 0.05) vertical heigth, tiller number, dry weigth of shoot and root, transpiration rate, but significantly improved water used efficiency. The interaction effect between AMF and water treatment were not significantly different. The growth and plant production were decreased with lower of water content of soil. If compared between AMF treatment with non-AMF treatment, the growth dan plant production were better than AMF treatment. Key words: forage, Setaria splendida, Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi, drought stress

Abstract

A field study on dairy cattle farms development in low land was conducted in Cirebon district applying a survey method to record all existing dairy cattle farms in the region. Data were collected by interviewing dairy farmers and monitoring the dairy cattle farms. Descriptive approach was applied in data analysis. Constraints would accur, if problems of relatively warm environment in such low land area could not be overcome. Improvements that could be recommended include : an appropriate tropical housing, energy rich feeding and more frequent feeding. Funthermore existing dairy cattle farms in the district should be replaced by dairy types that are resistence to warm environment. Sufficient feed availability and relatively high price of milk should be an optimum condition to enchance dairy cattle development in the said region. In addition, dairy cattle farms is a good opportunity to widely develop and to stimulate by increasing production scale and productivity through improving feeding regimes and adjusting livestock composition to achieve better economic efficiency. Key words: dairy cattle, low land, resources, development

Abstract

Zeolite is a composite minerals from mining which can be used as a source of minerals in animal ration. It has high absorbability and cation exchange characteristics. This study was aimed to examine the influence of zeolit and blood meal in the pig ration on pork quality characterictics. The experiment used 27 crossbred pig comprising 19 gilts and 8 barrows, with initial weight of 25.29 + 2.67 kgs. They were set up in a completely randomized factorial design 3 x 3, where the first factor was zeolit levels (0, 3, and 6%) and the second factor was blood meal level (0, 5, and 10%). The results showed that there were no significant influence of zeolite, blood meal or their interaction on all meat quality characteristics including pH, water holding capacity, tenderness, color and intramuscular fat contents of pork, except the measurement at pH of six hours postmortem of the pork was significantly (P < 0.01) affected by blood meal level of the ration. Five percent (5%) blood meal in the ration gave the highest pH of pork compared to the other blood meal levels. Key words: pig, pork quality, zeolite, blood meal

Abstract

The study was carried out by using 10 dams with single female kids and the same number of dams with single male kids, separated into two groups with their respectively kids. All kids received natural milk from their dams. After 4 weeks old, each group was divided into 2 subgroups in order to evaluate the effect of the creep feeding supplement. The result indicated that female kids growth lower (P < 0.05) than that of the male kids and the creep feed gave a significant effect on the growth rate (P < 0.05) on male which was 37% over those kids without creep feed; however there was no significant different (P > 0.05) of growth rate on the female. The highest growth rate was found on male with creep feed (107 g/d) and the lowest on female without creep feed feeding. Key words: Kacang goat, pre-weaning, creep feed

Abstract

The objectives of this research was to know the proportion and cha-racteristic of sperm after separated by albumen column technique. To identify the sperm bearing X, Y chromosome, the head of sperm from the fresh semen and the separated sperm were measured by morfometric method. The length and the width of the head sperm from fresh semen (9.21 and 5.10 m) were smaller than up fraction (9.68 and 5.44 µm) and similar with bottom fraction (9.15 and 5.14 µm). The proportion of X, Y spermatozoa from fresh semen (43 : 57) were significantly different (P < 0.01) compare to up fraction (80.88 : 19.12). However, almost similar with bottom fraction (41.80 : 58.82). The motility and sperm plasm membrane intact of spermatozoa from fresh semen were (77.5 and 79.68%) significantly higher (P < 0.01) compare to X spermatozoa (70.83 and 62.04%) and also Y spermatozoa (75 and 63.1%). The abnormality of sperm from fresh semen (2.17%) was significantly lower (P < 0.01) compare to X spermatozoa (6.32%) and Y spermatozoa (7.91%). These results showed that the sperm after separated by albumen column technique could be used for artificial insemination. Key words : sperm plasm, membrane intact, motility, albumin column
