Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries with abundant and diverse natural resources so that it is known as mega biodiversity. The high biodiversity in Indonesia is partly due to its geographic location as a tropical country. Meanwhile, plants belonging to the Caricaceae are one of the groups of plants that are very easy to find, affordable prices, and can be grown in most areas in Indonesia. During the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the student study service from home (Indonesian: Kuliah Kerja Nyata – Virtual Dari Rumah - or KKN-VDR) requires college students to explore the potential of their place of residence, so knowledge about Caricaceae needs to be explored and studied to find out its potential use. This study aims to determine college students' knowledge of Caricaceae around where they live. This study uses a survey method. The results showed that the knowledge of student study service on the Caricaceae in several aspects had not yet reached what was desired. Thus it is necessary to conduct a joint evaluation to encourage the Indonesian student to be more critical in recognizing the potential of natural resources so that they can make the best use of them for welfare, especially Caricaceae.

Abstract

This paper exposes the existence of Batak Toba's ancient script and the shift of its authenticity values during the rapid development of technology. The analysis adapts cultural and historical approaches to be exposed qualitatively by observing several transcripts virtually. Technology is viewed from two perspectives: a media that brings this ancient heritage back to be part of modern culture; and the means that lead this ancient writing to lose its authenticity. Several former documents from field and library research are compared, especially the use of several computer software, which has been developed to enable users to write in Batak Toba script through transliteration. The result reveals that efforts to conserve this cultural heritage should be accompanied by careful linguistic assistance so that the script and its writing convention would be maintained.

Abstract

Learning English in primary schools needs to be supported by books and reading materials that are appropriate for the child's age level. If children's reading materials are adjusted to their age, children will not have difficulty in understanding their reading text. The purpose of this study was to find out the number and types of English words that were produced by elementary school-age children as the first step to map children's mental lexicon as a reference for the teacher to choose reading text in learning English at school or home. It was descriptive and qualitative research in which data was taken from elementary school students' English writing. The results show that the 1st grade of elementary school students produced 45 words in three different topics namely animals, drinks, and activities. The fourth grade of elementary school students produced 130 until 600 words in writing a fiction story and their total vocabulary were 636 words. The fifth grade of elementary school students produced 1400 words in some different topics namely daily routine, pets, hobbies, like, and dislike. In conclusion, the higher level of education the children have, the more words they produce. The influence of Indonesian and Arabic in students’ composition indicates that Indonesian and Arabic are active languages ??that they use so that it can significantly affect the production of the English they are learning. Verbs that they produce imply that they can understand general and specific concepts possessed by each word.
