Abstract

This study examines the role of Mandailing ulama in education, intellectuals, and politics in the early 20th century. Ulama plays a critical role in safeguarding the morality of Muslim society (umma). Drawing upon the historical approach, it employed Kuntowijoyo model of writing history stages and Anthony Giddens' structuration theory to analyze the problems that this study intends to answer. This study argues that the social structure surrounding the Mandailing ulama enabled them to address religious and other sociocultural issues. This study also unveiled that the Mandaling ulama in the early 20th century mobilized the organizations, such as Al Washliyah (1930), Al-Ittihadiyah (1935), and Nahdlatul Ulama (1918) to promote the education of the indigenous people, fortify the Sunni school of thought from the heretical and influence of Dutch colonial government. It was manifested by supporting only two Islamic political parties: the Masjumi Party and the Nahdlatul Ulama Party. This suggests that Ulama were not only religious scholars who acquired knowledge of Islamic norms and disseminated them through religious and educational institutions, such as madrasa and pesantren, but also active agents in socio-political transformation within the Muslim community.

Abstract

Several Islamic higher education institutions have allegedly been exposed to radicalism, which is seen from the emergence of intolerant understanding, extremism, and involvement in terrorism. This study explores the efforts to prevent radicalism by implementing academic policies at State Islamic Higher Education based on experiences at IAIN Bukittinggi, UIN Jakarta, UIN Malang, and IAIN Tulungagung. It employed an ethnographic research method that collected the data through in-depth interviews, extensive observations, and documentation as data collection techniques. The results show that efforts to prevent radicalism were evidenced in the application of general policies of religious moderation in the curriculum and various campus community activities, introduction of campus mottos, tightening of students' selection system, orientation to campus life for new students, strengthening the academic atmosphere, and strengthening students' hard skills, abilities, and soft skills. These show that Islamic higher institutions are actively invloved in the eradication of religious radicalization.

Abstract

Sifat dua puluh (twenty attributes of God) is a specific Malay term to convey the doctrine of Sunni tradition in Southeast Asia. Formulated to digest the substance of a renowned book of Yusūf al-Sanūsī, Umm al-Barāhīn, this term began to appear in the 19th century as a leading Islamic theme in the kitab jawi of Malay scholars in Mecca. The scholars translated the book into Malay and expounded its contents in the form of commentaries (sharḥ), a rising style of writing kitab jawi on the doctrine of the period. Malay scholars' use of the term in Mecca was transmitted and then reproduced alongside the printing of kitab jawi in Southeast Asia. This process led the Sunni theology to constitute an Islamic orthodoxy in the region. This article presents a historical analysis of how sifat dua puluh became an established concept of Sunni theology in the Southeast Asian context, putting the mentioned work of al-Sanūsī as the source of the production of Sunni creeds in a popularly vernacular expression of the Muslims in the region.

Abstract

This paper examines the flourishing of moral enhancement through a critical investigation of Al-Zarnūjī’s Ta‘lim al-Muta‘allim. The critical reviews of the literature from refereed and peer-reviewed articles were employed using thematic topic analysis on the flourishing of moral enhancement with a special reference to Al-Zarnūjī's Ta‘lim al-Mutallim, in giving an insightful value to spiritual engagement. The results show that the subsequent phase of moral flourishing with spirituality comes from niyyah (goal-oriented commitment) as the enhanced enthusiasm derived from the continued consistency of doing goodness in the human morality indicator. This is followed with faqīhan mutawarri‘an (clear comprehension with carefulness) as comprehending personal behaviour with knowledge and moral quality. The following point supported muwāḍabah (thorough attempts) as the expansion of wide-ranging performance made for moral development and continued into sustaining individual behavioural growth with a spiritual quality. Furthermore, a discussion of implications serves to contribute to human behavioural development, with spirituality detailed into moral behaviour through spiritual quality enhancement, as well as the continued awareness of ethical behaviour sustainability and knowledgeable practice quality progression.

Abstract

This study explores religious education and identity formation among families within mixed-faith families in Flores, Eastern Indonesia, specifically, Muslim-Catholic families. This ethnographic research observes and holds in-depth interviews with eight mixed-faith families comprising four to eight family members. This study finds that mixed-faith families continue to carry out the process of faith education and identity formation for all their members. However, the presence of family members with different religions gives a distinctive character because there are always negotiations, adaptations, and even transformations. The form, intensity, and model of faith education between families differ depending on the context of a mixed-faith family formation, one's position and power in the family, one's way of thinking about religion, and the spiritual environment around the family. Faith education in a mixed-faith family can positively deepen faith, strengthen religious identity, increase knowledge about other religions, foster tolerance, and appreciate diversity. This can also fade away the identity and belief of the minority and even can lead to conversion. However, the bond of family love does not cause differences, fights and conversions into one meaningful conflict.

Abstract

This study examines the modernization of education governance through an accelerated learning paradigm among pesantren in Madura. This mixed-method study gathered primary data through interview and observation, while the secondary data were gained from relevant literature sources. This study uncovered two significant findings using education management and social change theories. First, the dynamics of education system governance at several pesantren in Madura have undergone a transformation over the past decade. This transformation is highlighted by the emergence of an accelerated learning system at several pesantrens. Second, implementing an accelerated learning program in the pesantren is conducted by performing modernization on the education governance, entailing two aspects, curriculum and period of study. In the curriculum aspect, accelerated learning and modernization takes shape in the form of learning material implementation based on Takhassus (specialization) program, which uses summaries of several subjects compiled from various book references or sources of the same discipline. In addition, through the takhassus program, each learner can manage and complete their study period in a shorter time.

Abstract

Pondok pesantren (Islamic boarding school) has improved in many aspects, including the quality in Indonesia. However, since 2020, sexual and physical abuses have occurred in pesantren that attract public attention. This phenomenon indirectly made many parties question the existence of pesantren. Based on the government directives, pesantren was supposed to be a safe and comfortable environment for learners. This paper presents the efforts of four pesantren in Indonesia to become child-friendly places. Findings based on the qualitative study reported in this paper show that child-friendly pesantren program has been initiated and developed by main figures, such as Kyai/nyai (pesantren leader), ustadz/ustadzah (teachers), and students (santri). Each pesantren has almost the same exertions, namely optimizing three main areas; subjects, management, and infrastructure, but the characteristics of the pesantren still impact the detail stages employed. For instance, Salaf pesantren still strive traditionally, while modern and semi-modern pesantren have begun to adapt to technological advances and current needs.

Abstract

The interfaith dialogue campaign takes a new turn after the demise of the authoritarian regime in 1998. While the previous campaign was characterized by the important role of public intellectuals, such as Gus Dur, Romo Mangunwijaya and Th. Sumartana; the new generation of campaigners adopt more community-based advocacy movement. The shift into a new turn specifically refers to two phenomena; 1) change of the modes and practices of interfaith dialogue movement at the society level and 2) the idea of recent interfaith originates more from communities rather than from prominent public intellectuals. These two phenomena basically show the opportunities and challenges for the future of interfaith dialogue campaign. The study uses two methods, namely archival and case study based on the empirical data from Makassar and Yogyakarta in the mid 2022. The findings show that advocating interfaith dialogues through communities as adopted by the new generation of campaigners apparently more effective for young generations than what is experienced before 1998. It generates the recent interfaith dialogue among young people to be intimate. The findings also implies that the religious moderation discourse and campaign recently propagated by the Ministry of Religious Affairs need to be critically assessed. These two findings interestingly show the conservatives’ involvement that eager to join interfaith campaign in order to curb hardliner stigma.

In this context, organic tolerance which was developed by pesantren is a certainty. Also, the management of harmony has been implemented professionally. The pesantren does not emphasize religious symbols, but it concerns the essence of Islamic orthodoxy. The pesantren management never questioned the differences of ethnic, racial, cultural, and religious of some teachers.
