Abstract

Peat land in the east coast of Sumatera (Riau, Jambi, South Sumatera) and Kalimantan (South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan and West Kalimantan) has being used for agricultural crops such as rice field, palm oil and coffee plantation. land preparation practiced is slash and burn method. Smoke haze that produce from peat fires were caused by these method. To determine the impact of such practice to atmospheric quality, a study was conducted at Pelalawan Province Riau. Four plots on peat land were prepared at sapric and hemic, each plot was 20 m x 20 m (0,04 ha). Before burning vegetation was cleared off, then the plots were circularly burned (ring fire) and greenhouse gases emitted were measured. The average of greenhouse gases emitted from sapric plot burning were 273 ppm CH[4], 10.395 ppm C0[2] and 1.223 ppm CO. Greenhouse gasses emitted from hemic plot burning were 306 ppm CH[4], 10.678 ppm C02 and 2176 ppm CO. The high CO emission from peat burning indicate there has been an incomplete burning at the fuel, due to high fuel moisture. The largest single atmospheric emission from peat burning was C0[2] and the smallest was CH[4] • The increase of greenhouse gases emission will contribute to global climate change, especially the global temperature increase through greenhouse effect of the gases.

Abstract

Increasing demand on glucomannan as healthy diet in develop countries, promotes higher planting area of Amorphophallus. Iles-iles corm (Amorphophallus muellen) contains high percentage of glucomannan. In order to meet with increasing demand, providing mass planting materials is a great concern in Indonesia. Therefore, the study on skin corm and bulbil as propagation materials was conducted. In the first experiment, bulbil with different size and section, i.e., very small, small, medium and large, and half section and 1f4 section were used. In the second experiment, we evaluated the prospect of skin corm as propagul where different size of skin corm was used, i.e., 1 em x 1 em, 2 em x 2 em, and 4 em x 4 em. Results showed that both bulbil and skin corm could be utilized as prospectivepropagules of iles-iles. Propagation using bulbil was more superior as compared to skin corm. Bulbil of both whole and sectioned had high emergence of bud (> 90%), except very small sized ones. Very small bulbil (diameter less than 1 em) resulted in ca 605 of emergence. Skin corm sized 4 em x 4 em produced equal emergence to medium bulbil. In general, increasing size of skin corm increased success of emergent bud. Delaying emergence on small sized skin corm could be assessed by smaller nutrient reserved. Most unseccessemergence of small sized skin and very small bulbil was due to decay of the propagules. These experiments implied that both bulbils and skin corm could be used as mass propagules for iles-iles production.

Abstract

Blood desease caused by blood disease bacterium is one of the important disease of banana in Indonesia. Disease control using resistant varieties was difficult to be practiced because the pathogen can attack all varieties of banana. Sanitation and eradication has been done by farmers but the desease still occured in the field with high incidence. Aplication of same rhizosphere bacteria failed to control the desease in the field.Keyword: Bacillus spp., Pseudomonas spp., endophytic bacteria, blood disease bacterium, banana

Abstract

Spodoptera litura Fabricius is one of polyphagous insects that often attacks so many plant species either annual and perennial crops. Severe infestation of the pest may decrease crop production. The farmers who grow agricultural crops generally control the insect pest using synthetic chemical insecticides. However, improper use of such pesticides may cause negative impacts to the environment. Insect pest control using botanical insecticide is an alternative which is relatively safe to the environment. A research to test the lethal effect of crude extract of bintaro leaf ( Cerbera odollam gaertn.) to S. litura larvae was conducted. The research was conducted at the laboratory of Forest Product Chemistry and the laboratory of Forest Entomology, Faculty of Forestry, IPB in 2009. The results shows that the crude extract of bintaro leaf has a strong knock down effect to S. litura larvae, with lC50 at 0,6 °/o to the second instar and 0,28 % to the second and the third instar. It is proven that the leaf extract, contains active chemical compounds pesticidal, e.g. flavonoid, steroid, saponin and tannin. Further tests are suggested under field condition researches should be conducted to test the efficacy of the extract in controlling S. litura at the nursery and the field.
