Abstract

Islam has always been the fulcrum of Cirebon courts. The centrality of Islam in the courts’ politics and culture is apparent today as it was in the seventeenth century. The last three decades of the seventeenth century were crucial for Cirebon since the formerly unitary sultanate of Cirebon (or Pakungwati) experienced a trifurcation. Subsequently, the new Cirebon rulers consisted of two sultans and one lord (panembahan) made a breakthrough by signing an alliance treaty with the Dutch East India Company (or VOC). Both parties signed the first treaty in 1681, which consensually confined the three rulers from exercising “real” powers. Although Islam is the core of Cirebon’s power, it was missing from both the negotiation and the final draft of the 1681 treaty. The present study, therefore, will unravel the arguments behind the “absence” of clauses that regulate Cirebon rulers’ religious exercise from the treaty that aims to limit their power. In so doing, this study accesses the combination of Dutch primary sources (VOC documents) with Cirebon local sources (Babad, Naskah, among others). Preliminary findings of the present study indicate that Cirebon and VOC shared different notions of power. Although VOC recognizes Cirebon’s priesthood, the company showed no interest in regulating the aspect that did not significantly influence them.

Abstract

At the early development of pesantren, the Islamic’s pattern were presented according to the Islamic pattern was developing at that time which was integrated with Javanese culture. Santri wear traditional Javanese clothes; learn Islamic text which is written in Javanese script and language in primbon, suluk and wirid formats. Suluk is the teaching of Sufism which is packaged in verses of the Macapat song, so santri get used to learning through Javanese songs. The intimacy between pesantren and Javanese culture was broken after post-Dipanegara’s War polarization, which divided the religious patterns of Javanese society into three groups: priyayi, putihan and abangan. The three of them were pushed to show their different identities and cultural expressions. In this context, pesantren is getting close to the Arabic culture. Meanwhile, Javanese culture is identified with priyayi and abangan. The peak of this polarization was when Javanese culture was taken over by abangan groups affiliated with the PKI for propaganda purposes. As a result, pesantren moved away from Javanese culture. Positive changes happened when Islam Nusantara became the PBNU’s platform and the strengthening of religious moderation by the Ministry of Religion, where appreciation for local culture was an important part. Slowly pesantren began to open up to Javanese culture. The appearance of several pesantren’s kiai in Javanese clothing, the emergence of Javanese-Islamic manuscript studies and the systematic efforts made by some of pesantrens to rebuild closeness to Javanese art, including those carried out by the Pesantren API Tegalrejo, Magelang and Pesantren Kaliopak, Bantul, indicate reharmony between pesantren and Javanese culture. This paper aims to capture the dynamics of pesantren and Javanese culture relations from its beginning to its current condition.

Abstract

Today's socio-religious movement cannot be separated from the explosion of the era of modernism which demands a more dynamic, flexible and not rigid propaganda movement in dealing with the problems of people's lives. This phenomenon is marked by the rise of digital da'wah that comes into people's lives, particularly in Indonesia. The urban Sufism movement once emerged in response to this phenomenon, but what about women's urban Sufism? Where is their position today? This research uses a qualitative approach. Sources of data obtained from several books, journals, articles and other scientific works. More deeply, this paper will discuss the bibliography from time to time, from conventional forms of Sufism to urban Sufism. Either through religious tariqa, majlis dhikir, or certain religious institutions that today continue to flourish in Indonesia through digital media. Sufi groups are "spiritual" movements which have also contributed to the social and religious problems of society. Urban Sufism in urban areas especially in the movement of women Sufism is expected to be a spiritual mobility power that is presented as a new spectrum that is more ogled and heeded. Primarily there are two points that can be elaborated. First, try to elaborate on the emergence of the urban Sufism movement of women who throughout history have rarely been touched by the academic world even in the history of Sufism intellectual. Second, women's urban Sufism and the da'wah model and movement gave birth to the rise of power as a form of resistance to the perspective of the marginalization of Sufi women. This paper will further describe in detail from Sufism literature and some examples of urban women's Sufism movements in the era of modernism.

Abstract

This research investigates the discourse of Islam Nusantara and Islam Hadhari that were developed in the foreign policies of Indonesia and Malayasia, respectively. These two discourses have certain similarities, such as the focus of both discourses to mainstream the issue of moderation and progressivism in Islamic religious life based upon the interpretation of the local wisdom. It is important to highlight that both of these discourses were coming into being through two different contexts. Islam Nusantara was constructed at the era when Muslim world were facing the residues from the failures of Arab Springs: the rise of ISIS as transnational terrorist movement, the rise of Islamophobia politics, and the heightened conflict between Sunni and Shiite. Islam Hadhari came into being at a very different context, where initially Islam Hadhari was proposed as a solution to face the challenge in democratizing Malaysian society amid the rising radicalism and terrorism in global political arena. This research would like to investigate both discourses using international political theology approach as developed by Vendulka Kubálková (2000), which focuses on analyzing the dialectics between religious texts and international political contexts. This research would also use the concept of macroscopical map of relations between religion and foreign policy that were developed by Warner & Walker (2011) to know how islam Nusantara and Islam Hadhari would be eventually adopted as part of Indonesian and Malaysian foreign policy discourses.

Abstract

In this article I follow some of the recent sociological literature on populism to bring out some important characteristics that distinguish it from other styles of politics and ideologies. Learning from the analysis on populism in Turkey as a comparative study, this article explores Indonesian Muslim populism phenomenon. Through tracing the experiences during the struggle for Independence and during the Old Order and the New Order, I do focus my study dealing with the question was the Anti-Ahok Mobilization of 2016-17 Populist? I argue it would be wrong to conclude that Islamic traditionalism, as represented by the NU (Nadhlatul Ulama), is systematically in conflict with Islamic populism. Instead of a struggle between traditionalist Islam and Islamic populism, therefore, I believe it is more correct to speak of populist forces within traditionalist Islam. There is populist opposition within NU and, even more threatening, there are populist traditionalist leaders outside the association who strongly appeal to the community of Nahdliyyin (NU followers).

Abstract

In the contemporary era, recognition or recognition is very crucial. However, instead of understanding it only culturally, recognition includes broad dimensions, including attempts to place one's or group's status in social and economic structures. This understanding derived from Nancy Fraser is used to analyze the activities of the Lakpesdam PBNU "care" program from 2015 to 2020. Based on the available activity documents, including minutes from various regions, this paper shows the importance of recognition in a more structural sense as a more efficient way of working. effective way to include vulnerable groups in Indonesia in citizenship discourse and practice.
