International Journal of Indonesian Philosophy & Theology (IJIPTh) is a blind-reviewed philosophical-theological journal published by AFTI (Asosiasi Filsafat Teologi Indonesia / Association of Indonesian Philosophy and Theology) and AAFKI (Asosiasi Ahli Filsafat Keilahian Indonesia / Association of the Indonesian Experts of Divinity Studies). IJIPTh specializes in researched papers related to efforts of contextualizing and inculturation theology and philosophy in Indonesian and Asian landscapes from the trans-interdisciplinary methodological point of view. Abstract

This article attempts to answer the question how interdisciplinary is theology in the Asian context? It tackles the issue in three distinct parts: (1) the notion of interdisciplinarity; (2) the relationship between theology and other disciplines; and (3) the principles and practices of interdisciplinary theologizing in Asia. First, interdisciplinarity feeds on the concept of scientific disciplinarity. Though “disciplines” as domains of knowledge exist from the Greeks to the scholastics, disciplinary specialization is a modern creation. The subsequent scientific compartmentalization longed for a synthesis, thus, leading to the varied ways of relating among scientific disciplines expressed in terms like interdisciplinarity, multidisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. The second part of the article maps how theology has dealt with its “other” throughout history. The third section argues for the dialogical character of both Asian cultures and Asian Christianities. Finding themselves in a land characterized by plural philosophies and religions, it cannot exist but be in dialogue with others. In the Asian continent, the serenity of the lotus meets the defiance of the cross bringing out a theology that expresses both harmony and prophecy, equilibrium and transformation. The article ends by showing methodological principles, theological methods, present practitioners and emerging questions generated by this complex interdisciplinary interaction on the Asian soil. AbstrakArtikel ini berusaha menjawab pertanyaan bagaimana teologi interdisipliner dijalankan dalam konteks Asia? Ada tiga isu yang digarap: (1) makna interdisiplinaritas; (2) keterpautan antara teologi dan disiplin lain; (3) prinsip dan praksis berteologi interdisipliner di Asia. Bagian pertama menggali interdisiplinaritas dalam ilmu-ilmu. Keanekaragaman ilmu-ilmu disimak mulai dari periode filsafat Yunani hingga Skolastik. Ilmu-ilmu modern mendistingsi “keilmiahan” dalam interdisiplinaritas, multidisiplinaritas, dan transdisiplinaritas. Bagian kedua membahas bagaimana teologi mengurus “yang lain” dalam sejarah. Bagian ketiga berargumentasi terkait dengan karakter dialogal dari keduanya, yaitu baik kultur Asia maupun Kekristenan Asia. Karena mendarat di tanah yang bercirikan filsafat dan kebudayaan yang beraneka macam, Kekristenan Asia tidak mungkin melepaskan diri dari dialog dengan yang lain. Di benua Asia, kedamaian lotus berjumpa dengan penebusan salib yang produknya mengukir harmoni dan kritisi, keseimbangan dan transformasi. Artikel berakhir dengan prinsip-prinsip metodologis, metode teologis dari para praktisi saat ini, dan pertanyaan-pertanyaan penting yang muncul dari interaksi interdisipliner yang kompleks di tanah Asia.

Abstract

The revelation of God through the history is being permeated in human beings’ culture. Eventually, its proclamation too brought in itself the culture elements. Since, the culture itself is holy, because it is exactly part of the revelation, and one culture can be in dialogue with other (s) one because God has taken the culture as a context for His own revelation. In missiology, theological reflection tries to further offer and define what the church has been doing since its presence, a practice of a contextual theological reflection. In this space of thought, the church doctrine on communio sanctorum will be in dialogue with a Dayak Tunjung cosmology, an effort to make a synthesis between theology and culture so that the two communities can live and grow together in their respective traditions. The synthetic model of contextual theology offered by Stephen B. Bevans will be used as a framework. The reflection will go to make a synthetic model of theology of Dayak Tunjung cosmology and communio sanctorum in its three categories, mainly cosmological, ritual, and communal life. God, through his Holy Spirit, continuously renews the human beings together with their whole culture aspects.

Abstract

Today, the world is influenced by many views, such as secularism and atheism, which affect many people, so they are far from God.  Because of them, moral and ethical standards are not based on the belief of God, but just on the humanity standard.  For Christianity, the views cause many of God's believers to leave the Scripture's truths.  To solve the problem, Christians must learn from the Christian theologian who has a significant contribution to Christian theology.  One of the Christian theologians is Augustine.  Augustine was one of Christian’s famous theologians, in which his theology/thoughts are influenced Christian theology today.  This research uses a library research method to explore Augustine's ideas.  The books that expose about Augustine's views are used to find Augustine's theology.  The result of the research is that Augustine's theology is necessary and relevant to Christian's theology today to confront the world's views so that the people of God do not live far from God.

Abstract

Western philosophers called the idea of “individual-self” a “modern project”. Charles Taylor traced its historical development back to great philosophers of European rationalism (Kant, Hegel, Rousseau, J. G. Herder) with the birth of modern awareness of “individual-self” connected to western-modern individualistic society. Based on a study of “ethical-texts” preserved in Manggaraian oral-tradition, however, I postulate that indigenous tribes have their own way-of-thinking about individual-self, particularly individual-moral-self. Manggaraian people, though mainstream anthropology categorize it communal-traditional society, have some basic knowledge of the idea of moral-self, in the philosophical terminology of Taylor. Strong awareness of moral-self endorses people to have courage to make a personal-individual moral decision (Tillich). Traditional-ethical texts endorse individuals to have their own opinion on important issues of social-moral life, though they will different from the mainstream. Individuals do not depend upon social-communal values. Also in traditional community individuals are endorsed to make their own moral considerations though it means they contradict society. In moral issues individuals should make their own decision. This study traces such tendency in one of traditional community, Manggarai, in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. It is based on several field research conducted in Manggarai for a project of doctoral dissertation.

Abstract

This paper discusses the potential advantages of using vernacular language instruction to address  the high drop out rates of indigenous elementary students in Highlands Papua, Indonesia. The effect of challenges created by differences between local culture and the culture presented in the national Indonesian educational system is discussed. David Kolb’s Experiential Learning theory is discussed as a method that can improve student outcomes by encouraging early comprehension through linguistically and culturally relevant experiences. Successful bilingual primary education programs in various countries are discussed. Examples are presented that illustrate the importance and advantages of foreigners acknowledging local language and culture while amongst the Papua people. This paper proposes steps that the Indonesian government, especially the local jurisdiction of Papua province’s governance, can take to utilize vernacular language to address the achievement gap of indigenous elementary students in Highlands Papua.
