Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the problems experienced by students in the process of learning English during the pandemic and to describe the use of online learning media in the learning process. The formulation of the research problem is what problems are faced by STIMIK Handayani students in the online English learning process during the pandemic? And how is the application of online learning applications in the English learning process? This study uses a qualitative descriptive research approach. Respondents of this study were students who programmed English courses for the SK class with a total population of 12 people and were in the first semester. The total number of respondents is 6 students who are students who are actively participating in lectures. Questionnaires are used to explore information obtained from respondents later. The data analysis technique refers to Miles & Huberman through the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions or verification. From the findings and discussion, the researcher concludes that the main obstacles commonly faced by students when participating in online learning are difficulties in understanding the material and poor signals. Other obstacles are in the form of feeling bored, less interactive, and having difficulty focusing. With this finding, the researcher hopes that there will be findings related to increasing the effectiveness of learning through online learning. Next is the application of application-based online learning. Based on the data collected and presented descriptively, the researcher concluded that the application of online learning was less effective.

Abstract

During the pandemic Covid-19, among the many long-distance communication applications, the teachers at SMAN 5 Baubau choose Whatsapp Group as learning media which could be used on weak networks and also does not consume internet quota like the others. The objectives of this study was to find the using of this application as a learning media at SMAN 5 Baubau and the impact of this application on the distance learning process during the covid-19 pandemic. The present study used qualitative method. This research carried out in June - December 2020 at SMA Negeri 5 Baubau. The subjects in this study were 18 students at SMA Negeri 5 Baubau with details of Class X (6 people), Class XI (6 people) and Class XII (6 people). The instruments used in this research was interview. The findings showed that the majority of students did not have problems or obstacles in using this application. However, some students found it difficult in the learning process that depends on the chat in the group. Although students did not have obstacles in operating the application, but as a medium of learning students had many obstacles and WhatsApp as a learning medium would be more complicated if it is not supported by the creativity of the teacher.

Abstract

The main problem of the research was ‘what are the problems faced by the students in learning vocabulary at the SMP Satap Palea?’ The research was case study. The subjects of the research were students and an English teacher in SMP Satap Palea at grade seven. The data of research were collected through test and interview. The data were analyzed through three steps adopted from Miles and Huberman; data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The result of this research showed that the result of test of the students of SMP Satap Palea was low. The problem faced by the students were lack or low motivation in learning English vocabulary, the students had low interest in learning English and lack of strategy used in learning vocabulary. It was indicated by the indifferent attitude or their reluctance to memorize English vocabulary. This reluctance impacted their mastery of English vocabulary. The students of SMP Satap Pelae rarely repeated their English lesson at home. The result of interview also indicated that student’s environment did not show positive impact for the students to learn, including the students peer.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the metaphors in the film “The Lord of The Rings and The Fellowship of The Rings” (LR & FR) and explained the metaphors structurally, orientationally, and ontologically. The problem studied in this paper is "How does the metaphor in the LR & FR film affect the messages conveyed in this film?" This research is a content analysis applies a qualitative approach in which the dialogue in the film as the source of data. The results of the study found that the metaphor in the LR & FR film expresses the origin domain to the target domain with a pattern that emphasizes meaning. The metaphorical concept of the source domain corresponds to the concept of the target domain. Metaphor in the film LR & FR as a figurative language has the same quality in representing a concept into a concept.

Abstract

The problem of the research was “what factors did affect students’ reluctance to speak in Speaking class?” the objective of this research was to know what factors did affect students reluctant to speak in Speaking class. The research was a descriptive qualitative research. The subject of the research were students and a lecturer of Speaking subject in English Department of Unidayan. The data of research were collected through observatin, interview and documentation. The data were analyzed through three steps adopted from Miles and Huberman; data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The result of this research showed that students’ reluctance to speak in speaking class caused by two factors namely linguistic problems which were lack of vocabulary, grammar and pronounciation. And non linguistic problem which were lack of self confidence, shyness, nervous, shaking, and worried in making mistake. In addition, students also did not gain any additional English courses outside their class.

Abstract

The problem statement of this research was whether the dominant reading strategy used by grade eight students at SMP Negeri 17 Baubau. From the problem statement, this research aims to know the dominant reading strategy in English subject activity used by grade eight students at SMP Negeri 17 Baubau Data collection in this research was carried out using a research instrument in the form of a questionnaire to determine the category of students' reading strategy. The data obtained were analyzed by descriptive statistics. The result indicated that the mean score for the metacognitive reading strategy was 2.79, the mean score for the cognitive reading strategy was 2.81, and the social reading strategy was 2.61. From those results, it could be concluded that the dominant reading strategy used by grade eight students was the cognitive strategy.

Abstract

Problem statement in this research was whether the use of everyone is a teacher here increase students speaking ability on eleventh grade students at SMK Negeri 1 Pasarwajo. Objective in this research was to found out the significant increasing of students speaking ability by using everyone is a teacher here compared using conventional method in class XI students.This research used quasy experimental research with quantitative approach. Population in this research were all eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri Satu Pasarwajo with total population were 64 students. This research used random sampling technique. Data collection in this research was carried out using research instrumen of test. The test was collect administering pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Pre-test and post-test was given to know the students speaking ability before get treatment and after get treatmen. The data obtained in this research were analyzed by descriptive statistic and inferential statistic. Based on the finding of the research, the research obtained the mean value of pretest in Experimental class was 46.66 and the mean value of posttest in Experimental class was 63.57, the mean value of pretest in Control class was 45.57 and the mean value of posttest in Control class was 45.85. The significant value was 0.000, t-count was greater than t-table (8.336>2.021). Based on the result, the researchers conclude that there is an improvement in students’ speaking ability using the method of of everyone is a teacher here.

Abstract

The problem statement based on the background of the research, the research of problems statement formulated, is there any significant difference Study of Students in Reading Interest through Humor Story at SMP Negeri 18 Baubau. This research used a quantitative approach with applying Descriptive methods. Population on this research was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 18 Baubau consisted of 256 students. The sample was taken by using a purposive sampling technique consisted of 30 students. The results of this research showed that the based on T table the value was 1,991 and T count was 62,129. It can conclude that t count was 62,129 > 1,991 of T table, so that Ho was rejected and H1 was accepted. It means that there was not significant difference Study of students’ interest in reading through humor story.

Abstract

The problem in this study was how were the students’ attitude in learning English at eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 2 Gu? This study aimed at determining and identifying students’ attitude in learning English in the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 2 Gu. The design of this study was a descriptive qualitative. Subjects of the research were fifteen students of eleventh grade at SMA Negeri 2 Gu. Techniquies of data collection in this study were questionnaire and interviw. Techniques of data analysis used were data reduction, data display and conclusion. The result showed thwt te students had positive attitude in learning English, which consisted of aspect of cognitive attitude, aspect of affective attitude and aspect of behavior attitude. In all aspects students’ attitude were in the good category. Based on three aspects of attitudes, the most dominant aspect of attitude was the affective attitude aspect.

Abstract

The problem in this research was whether there was a significant difference on students’ vocabulary mastery before and after the application of short animation video? The objective of the research was to determine the effectiveness of using short animation video on students’ vocabulary mastery. This research uses a pre-experimental method. The subject of the research consisted of 26 students of class VII at SMPN 7 Baubau. This research was one group pretest-posttest. The procedure of the research consisted of three steps. They were pretest, treatment, and posttest. The data was collected by using the test which was analyzed by quantitative analysis. The research outcome indicated that: 1) the mean value of the pretest was 44.12 and the mean score of the posttest was 68.85. 2) from the hypothesis result by using the t-test, obtained tcount was 4.564, and the sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 smaller than 0.05, so that, Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. it meant that there was a significant difference on students' vocabulary mastery before and after the application of the short animation video. Therefore, teaching vocabulary in SMPN 7 Baubau by using short animation video was effective.
