Abstract

The research was aimed to improve pupils’ vocabulary by using video songs. This research was a classroom action research which done in two cycles. The subject of this research was the class A6 pupils of TK Immanuel. The researcher observed pupils’ improvement by collecting data through field notes, observation checklist and vocabulary test. The pupils’ behaviour towards the learning process was gathered by field note and observation checklist. The data of vocabulary was obtained by vocabulary test which was assessed through scoring rubric. The result showed those pupils’ problems in recognizing and mentioning the vocabulary had been solved by using video songs as the media of teaching. Furthermore, pupils’ interest in learning vocabulary also improved. It was shown by the pupils’ enthusiasm to pay attention in watching the video and singing together during teaching and learning process. As the conclusion, the media was able to be used in improving pupils’ vocabulary.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to improve students listening comprehension by using Bottom-Up technique. This research is a classroom action research which has done in three cycles. The subject for this research was the tenth grade students in class X TAV. The research was conducted by using Bottom-Up technique which consists of three main stages. There are word processing, phrase processing, and comprehension. The researcher observed students improvement in listening comprehension by collecting data through field notes, observation checklist and listening test. Field note and observation checklist were used to gather the students attitude in learning process. The data of listening was collected through listening test and it was assessed through scoring rubric. The result showed that students problems in understanding the contents of listening and vocabulary had been solved by using Bottom-Up technique. In the first cycle, the students mean score was 76.7. It increased in the second cycle to 82.1, and 83.7 in third cycle. As the conclusion, the technique was able to be used in improving students listening comprehension. The researcher recommends the teacher to use Bottom-Up technique as a technique in teaching and learning process, especially in the teaching listening with the similar setting and difficulty.

Abstract

This research was done to know the factors’ influencing students’ motivation to speak in a group discussion. This research is qualitative survey, in which the subjects are the Third-Semester Students of English Education Study Program of Tanjungpura University in Academic Year 2018/2019. The subjects of this research were 25 students in class A. The data were collected through observation and survey. Based on the data the students are motivated enough in speaking class and the motivation are relatively high across the students but most of the students faced several speaking problems such as afraid of making mistakes, lack of confidence, and lack of motivation. In summary, the factors that influenced the students’ motivation to speak in a group discussion are the students' interest to the materials of learning, the students’ interest to the culture of the target language, and lastly the reinforced that the students receive inside/outside the teaching and learning process. All of the factors are related to types of motivation, such as, intrinsic, extrinsic, instrumental, and integrative motivation. The writer claimed that knowing and understand sorts of motivation is essential with the intention of making a better teaching and learning environment

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to improve the writing skill of the Management students at Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Muhammadiyah Pontianak. A classroom action research was employed to conduct a portfolio assessment as a process-oriented skill. Students are expected to be able to write various kinds of business letters to fulfill the needs of their future career. The ability of how to write well cannot be obtained through a product-oriented approach particularly to students with low level English skill. Therefore, this study aimed at improving students’ writing skill in terms of writing business letters namely letter of offer. The samples consisted of 37 students of Business English subject in the academic year 2018/2019. The findings of the study proved significant improvement on students’ writing with portfolio assessment in terms of sub-skills in writing namely text harmony, vocabulary selection, grammar option, vocabulary writing, and writing tidiness from the first cycle to the second cycle. Subsequently, the students can orderly produce piece of writing since the underlying purpose of this study was to encourage writing as process-oriented skill.

Abstract

This research aims to design instructional materials for teaching and learning writing recount text through the Edmodo platform to tenth-grade students of SMA Kristen Abdi Wacana Pontianak. This instructional material was designed based on the teacher's interview, analysis of the current syllabus, and the English textbook. The researcher applied ADDIE as the research model. In this research, the researcher only implemented three phases which are analyzing, designing, and developing (ADD) without implementing and evaluating phase because of time limitation. The materials and tasks were indicated the teaching and learning focus only on writing recount text. This instructional was designed to include learning through digital learning media. Thus, some of the materials and tasks were provided on the Edmodo platform. The main structures of the instructional are the books' cover, preface, syllabus, basic competence and indicator competence, learning goals, material, and task. The researcher used expert validation to make sure that the material was usable. It revealed that the interpretation result of the product was very good. Besides, these instructional materials which were designed indicate that it is workable as the teaching materials in SMA Kristen Abdi Wacana Pontianak.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out how STAD technique did improve students comprehension in reading descriptive text. The action hypothesis in this research was stated that teaching reading descriptive text using Student Team Achievement Divisions (STAD) technique can improve the achievement of the eighth grade students of MTSN 2 Pontianak. Classroom action research was used in conducting this research in two cycles. The data were divided measurement test, observation checklist, and field note. The result of the implementation shows that after the researcher conducted the actions, the students reading comprehension improved as shown in the result of both the observation on the students activities during the actions and their individual quizzes mean scores. From the reading comprehension test, the mean score of the individual quiz 1 was 48.57 and the mean score of the individual quiz 2 was 75.75. Student Team Achievement Divisions technique can improve reading comprehension of main idea, details, reference and inference.

Abstract

This research was aimed to describe language learning strategies in listening used by a third semester student of English Education Study Program who gets high achievement in listening English comprehension. This research was a qualitative research. The subject of this research was a successful language learner from a third semester student. This research was a case study which used observation and interview as the instruments of data collecting. The observation was done using direct and indirect observation and for the interview was done using semi structured interview that supported by a narrative analysis. The result of data analysis indicated that the student who categorized as a successful language learner in listening comprehension used the four framework of  listening strategies  by Goh and Kaur (2017) as the representative of language learning strategies in listening which proposed by O’Malley and Chamot (1990). Based on the result, the student who gets high achievement in listening English comprehension employed four strategies namely directed/selective attention strategies, planning and evaluation strategies, problem solving strategies and mental translation strategies. The findings revealed that the student who categorized as a successful language learner in this research was not achieving the goal of learning instantly

Abstract

The research was aimed to investigate the use of diary writing to overcome students’ problem in writing recount texts. The problems include writing a recount text in chronological order, writing correct verb changes and developing ideas. Classroom action research was conducted by applying diary as the technique to help students overcome their problem. There were two cycles conducted in this research. The data were taken from the students’ individual score, observation checklist, and field notes. The result showed that teaching writing through diary writing improved students’ writing recount text. Referring to the research findings, the data showed that diary writing improved students’ recount text, as seen in their score. These in terms of score, students’ improved from 71.96 to 76.03 and improving the motivation to the students which makes them eager to write also makes the teaching learning process better. In conclusions, students’ writing recount text of the tenth grade students of class IPS 1 of SMAN 4 Sungai Raya in academic year 2018/2019 improved by using diary.

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this research is to design a comic book for extensive reading material and this research is classified as Research and Development (R & D). The final product of this research is a comic book for enrichment for students of A-1 class year-2 English Study Program of Tanjungpura University. The comic book is also following the steps of making vocabulary exercise comic book inspired by online comic. The data collection of this research is obtained through questionnaires with 17 students of A-1 class as the research subjects. Based on the table of students’ frequency in reading Webtoon comics, it can be seen that, most of the students are often reading Webtoon comic book (66.7%) while other students (25.9%) are routinely reading Webtoon comic book. There are three pages of exercises in the end of each chapter of this comic book. The exercises are the simple questions related to synonym and antonym of the unfamiliar word found in the story they have been read. It is expected that the students could answer the questions orally or in written form.

Abstract

This research aims to improve students reading comprehension on recounttext by using Question Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy. This researchis a classroom action research which was conducted in three cycles. Theparticipants of this research consist of the teacher and the students in classX IIS 3 of SMAN 1 Sungai Raya. The researcher collected the data ofstudents improvement in reading comprehension by observing the datathrough reading test, observation checklist, field note and self-assessmentforms. The result showed that students problems in comprehending recounttext had been solved by using QAR strategy. Right There and Think andSearch question improved students understanding of generic structure andlanguage features of recount text. The mean score of students readingcomprehension enhanced in each cycle. In the first cycle, the students meanscore was 57.2, it increased to 68.8 in the second cycle, and 82 in the thirdcycle. In other words, Question Answer Relationship (QAR) strategyimproved students reading comprehension of recount text.
