Abstract

Background: This research article is focusing on annotated translation to describe and give plausible reasons in solving the translation problems.Purpose: The purposes of this study are: (1) to attain information concerning the difficulties faced by the researcher while translating the source text, and (2) to give plausible translation reasons to the difficulties.Design and methods: Introspective and retrospective methods are employed to explore the plausible translation on Bicycle Shop Murder novel. Data findings are validated using translation strategies by Chesterman.Results: As the researcher tries to figure out problems during the process of translation by giving annotation for each data, it shows that from the 30 data chosen to be analyzed, there are: two (2) literal translation, two (2) loan, two (2) calque, two (2) transposition, two (2) clause structure change, two (2) phrase structure change, two (2) synonymy, two (2) antonymy, four (4) distribution change consisting of two (2) compression and two (2) expansion, two (2) paraphrase, two (2) naturalization, two (2) coherence change, two (2) explicitness change from implicit into explicit, and two (2) interpersonal change used to solve these problems.

Abstract

Background: Figurative language are quite popular in song’s lyric because we can hide our messages or what we had experienced or felt. That became a reason why we should learn more about kinds of figurative language in order to understand more about the real meanings that are conveyed in the songs.Purpose: The aim for this research is to discover the kinds of figurative language in three songs of Disney Movies Original Soundtrack.Design and methods: In this research, the researcher used qualitative methods. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Mezo’s theory of figurative language. The source of data for this research are from Disney movies original soundtrack namely, the song entitled “Lead the way” from Raya and the last dragon movie, “Love, brave and true” from Mulan movie and “How does a moment last forever” from the Beauty and the Beast movie. The data from this research are the sentences that had figurative language. Result: After doing an analysis, there are 21 data appeared. The researcher discovered 6 kinds of figurative language from those data namely, Hyperbole (6 data), Metaphor (5 data), Personification (4 data), Litotes (2 data), Simile (2 data), and Synecdoche (2 data).

Abstract

Background:  People often used the code in their daily conversation, spoken or written language, formal or informal. When people do code switching, it can make them become bilingual.Purpose: The objective of this paper is to find out how many code switching are applied, types of code switching in dialog between the characters in Insecurity novel of Angelina Johnson included the reasons for using the code switching.Design and methods: The method used in this analysis is qualitative descriptive method with the library and internet research. This analysis focused on analyzing the types of code switching based on the theory of Poplack and reasons for using code switching based on Hoffman theory.Results: The results of analysis found the total in dialog that code switching occurs 141 data from chapter 1 to 19. Total 3 types of code switching, that most widely used is intra-sentential occurs 122 times, then inter-sentential 13 times, while tag switching occurs 6 times. And also found that only six reasons based on Hoffman theory by talking about particular topic found 47 times, quoting somebody else found 3 times, being empathic found 14 times, interjection found 6 times, repetition used for clarification found only once, while intention of clarifying found 14 times.

Abstract

Background:  Teaching languages has different ways from teaching another subjects.Purpose: The objective of this research is to know the effectiveness of Active Learning Method in Teaching Simple Future.Design and methods: This research is using an evaluation method. The research was conducted at the seventh grade of SMP Tunas Harapan, Pasar Kemis, Tangerang. The data were collected through observation, teaching learning process, pre-test and post-test, questionnaires. This program contains the planning, how to implement and improve the students’ English Grammar Simple Future through Active Learning Method. The exercise was a mean to evaluate the action conducted in research.Results: The result of this research indicated that: (1) Using Active Learning Method in teaching simple future is one of a good solution to improve the students’ grammar skill, (2) it makes students are more easily in understanding and using simple future tense in daily activities, and (3) students become more active in responding the lessons or questions given by the teacher.

Abstract

Background:  Politeness is a common strategy that is used by most of speakers; even the English native speakers do such thing to their counterparts as well. It is especially appropriate when someone is making a request, talking on the telephone or engaging in a pleasant conversation with someone else. However, there are different opinions about what is and is not considered as polite since there are distinctions in culture from one country to other countries all over the world.Purpose: research aims to find out the negative politeness strategies which is used by Colleen McGuire in her utterances as the main character of the novel Savage Land.Design and methods: This research use a qualitative method. The data source that is used in this research is taken from the dialogues uttered by Colleen McGuire as the main female character in the novel Savage Land.Results: From the 10 strategies of negative politeness strategy according to Brown Levinson’s theory, the writer found the total of 4 strategies which was used by the main female character, Colleen McGuire, in the novel Savage Land. Those 4 strategies are hedge, be pessimistic, minimize the imposition, and impersonalize the speaker to the addressee.
