Abstract

Background: Translators often deal with various types of texts, such as academic texts, journalistic texts, subtitle texts, legal texts, speech texts, literary texts, and manual texts. Manual text could be one of many interesting subjects of research in translation field. Translating manual text should follow the principles, such as communicative, short, concise, easy to read, reader-oriented, and natural in target language.Purpose: This study examines the translation technique of 12 excerpt of Cosmos oven manual text in the form of phrases, clauses, and sentences translated from English into Indonesia.Design and Method:  This study uses 18 translation technique from (Molina Albir, 2002) to analyzed the data that was taken from Cosmos oven manual text.Results: The results of the study showed that there are six translation techniques found in Cosmos oven manual texts: amplification (30%), modulation (26%), reduction (26%), borrowing (7%), literal translation (7%), and linguistic compression (4%). Cosmos oven manual text mostly used amplification technique. There are some additional words or information, paraphrasing, making the text explicit to make the translation clear and help target readers understand the text.

Abstract

Background:  Learning to read in elementary schools which is carried out at the first grade level is an early stage of reading learning or called beginning reading.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which new students in elementary school (grade 1) were able to read and to know the difficulties faced by students when reading and its factors.Design and methods: The method used is a qualitative method using descriptive analysis. In this study, researchers went directly to the center of the field individually to obtain data from research subjects, while the subjects in this study were 1st grade elementary school students, 1st grade parents in several schools in East Bogor. The data collection technique used by the researcher is interviewing parents of grade 1 elementary school students and direct observation of students' abilities.Results: The reading ability of grade 1 elementary school students who have been observed in the reading test there are some students who are fluent in reading without help and without stuttering. There are two factors that affect reading difficulties, internal factors and external factors. Internal factors can be seen from the physical students. Physical weakness can affect reading difficulties. External factors of students that can affect reading difficulties are factors from the social environment and the most influential is the role of parents who accompany children to read at home. Parents who do not participate in the development of students' reading will hinder students' reading skills.

Background:  Reading is still considered trivial by Indonesian, especially parents of students. Abstract

Background:  the communication pattern applied by the teacher becomes a vital thing to be discussed.Purpose: This study aims to find the use of the language style used by the teacher.Design and methods: The research approach used is a qualitative approach. The research method used is content analysis.  The data analysis of this research was carried out through the Miles and Huberman flow model consisting of 1) identification, 2) data reduction, 3) data presentation, 4) conclusion drawing and verification, and 5) final conclusions and recommendations.Results: third-grade teachers at SD Negeri Ciheuleut 1 in communicating with students tend to prioritize conveying messages over other things. What is meant here is close communication so that messages from the teacher will be easier and faster to be understood by students.

Abstract

Background:  Novel readers from Indonesia, especially students, are less able to distinguish the types of sentences.Purpose: This study aims to describe what are the kind of imperative sentences on Divergent Novel.Design and methods: The method used in this research is descriptive analysis method. The data that the researchers used as material for analysis were obtained in the novel Divergent by Veronica Roth. The procedure is as follows: 1) Selecting the data, obtained by marking parts of the text that are considered important and in accordance with the formulation of the problem; 2) Arrange the data in a systematic structure by grouping the data according to the research objectives and classifying the data into a data corpus; 3) Analyze and interpret data according to the elements studied. Based on the findings on step 2Results: This study revealed the total imperative sentence found are 106 times. The details are as follows— the command category consists 41 times, the request category consists 28 times, the invitation category consists 4 times, the suggestion category consists 20 times, the advice category consists 7 times, the prohibition category consists 4 times, the compulsion category consists 2 times.

Abstract

Background: Each user has their smartphone to do communication. The user tends to use social media to communicate each other. Now in pandemic of COVID 19, the teachers do mostly communication to the students and/or to the expatriate teacher are using English. Purpose: This study is aim to reveal on teacher perspective on what extent that the social media help them to enrich the English skills. Design and methods: This study is conducted by using narrative inquiry method. The narrative inquiry method aims to reveal certain topic referring to stories and/or experiences. There are 9 participants who works as teacher at international schools at Tangerang. The participants’ selection is using purposive sampling strategy as knowing the participants will give their stories to only their close friend. The data is validated by triangulation of data source technique. The triangulation of data source technique is done by crosschecking the data among participants’ responses. Results: This study revealed that social websites and the content of media give more impact to the improvement of English skills of the teachers. This research recommends to investigate a certain categories social media on specific skills and/or to investigate a certain platform in promoting the English learning process.

Abstract

Background: There is a situation when people are discussing topics that are considered sensitive which labeled vulgar or inconsiderate such as death, religion, sex, racial issues or politics, the use of euphemism is very useful. By using the euphemism, it can turn unmentionable words into mentionable and less offensive. Turning the unmentionable or bad words into mentionable or good words that make euphemism give rise to semantic change through changing the sense of words. Purpose: The aim of this research is to find the types of euphemism in The Washington Times online political articles. Design and methods: This research applied descriptive qualitative method, while the data were collected by close reading and observing the words, phrases or clauses that contains the euphemism types in The Washington Times online political articles. This research applies the theory of Allan and Burridge for euphemism types Results: As the results of representative data, the types of euphemism found in the articles are 3 metaphors, 1 remodeling, 9 circumlocutions, 1 abbreviation, 2 one-for-one substitutions, and 1 hyperbole. All of the euphemism types in this research are often used as the substitute expression in order to have the positive connotation and to save the readers from unpleasant topics or issues.

Abstract

Background: Throughout the lyric, -from music- there must be emblazoning with the meaning within it. Purpose: This study is coincided in seeking out the use of figurative language’s content in Bohemian Rhapsody’s lyric by Queen. Design and methods: Whereupon, the qualitative approach with design of content analysis is used in this study. The researcher acts as the main instrument since analyzing it. The focus on this study shows twenty figurative languages usage in it. The entire data is analyzed through three stages; 1). Data reduction, 2). Data representation, 3). Conclusion. Results: The result of this study shows there are 20 kinds of figurative languages; they are; Alliteration (3 lines), assonance and consonance (1 line), Hyperbole (1 line), Imagery (2 lines), Internal rhyme (1 line), Irony (1 line), metaphor (2 lines), and Onomatopoeia (1 line) Personification (1 line), Repetition (1 line), Simile (1 line), and symbolism (two lines). The researcher concludes, the figurative language used by this lyric is to bring the meaning coming up with beautiful language.

Abstract

Background: The writer interested to analyze the code switching and code mixing in Suhay Salim’s video because she is a bilingual speaker. She is able to speak both Bahasa and English. In each her video, Suhay Salim always uses code switching and code mixing. Purpose: The objective of this research is to know the types of code switching and code mixing used in the video, and also to know the reasons why the speaker used code switching and code mixing in her YouTube video. Design and methods: The data were collected through library research. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative method. Results: The result of this analysis is indicated that: (1) Types of code switching that found are situational code switching and metaphorical code switching. (2) types of code mixing found are insertion and alternation. (3) while the reasons to use code switching and code mixing are talking about particular topic, real lexical need, interjection, repetition used for clarification, and expressing group identity.

Abstract

Background: For centuries, newspapers have delivered news to the reading public informing important events of a day. Specifically, the political news nowadays is more relaxed and popular than other sections, not to mention that it is also presented in an interesting and serious manner. Purpose: This research aims to classify and determine the verbs whether they are finite or non-finite. Design and methods: The subjects of the research are political news of “The Jakarta Post” newspaper which have taken and collected from two articles published on Monday, January 27th, 2020 and Tuesday, January 28th, 2020, with the focus on news related to “Donald Trump’s issues between Israeli and Palestinians”. The method used in the research is descriptive qualitative methodology. The main theory of this research are Greenbaum and Nelson (2009), Burton-Roberts (2011), and Lobeck and Denham (2014). The steps in analyzing the data include: (1) collecting the data, (2) categorizing the collected data into their own classifications, (3) analyzing the data, (4) determining the data whether they are finite or non-finite verbs, and finally (5) concluding the data. Results: The results of the research shows that from the total of two hundred and seventy two findings, there are one hundred and twenty-eight data of finite verbs (47%) and one hundred and forty-four data of non-finite verbs which then are divided into thirty-one –to infinitives (12%), twenty-six bare infinitives (10%), twenty-three passive participles (8%), thirty –ing participles (11%), twelve passive participle forms of be (4%), nine progressive participle forms of be (3%), and thirteen perfect participle forms of have (5%).
