Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of mathematics literacy abilities of elementary school students in relation to 21st century education issues. The purpose of this study is to find out how students are able to apply mathematical concepts in problems that arise in everyday life and the factors that influence them. The research design used was descriptive qualitative. This research was carried out on 30 fourth grade elementary school students in Bandung regency by giving mathematics literacy tests and followed by interviews. The results showed that the students' mathematics literacy abilities were low in terms of level one and two. Level one includes the ability to use knowledge about mathematical concepts directly. Level two includes the ability to use mathematical knowledge procedurally in solving problems. Mathematics literacy abilities are influenced by mastery of mathematical content and mathematical process thinking ability. Most students mistakenly understand the properties and difficult to solve the problem of measuring geometry. Students also find it difficult to draw conclusions due to errors in understanding the purpose of mathematical problems in real life contexts. Based on these findings, learning activities need to be designed optimally so that students can master mathematical concepts in a structured manner.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to (1) determine the inferential understanding ability of student grade 6 in reading comprehension of narrative texts; (2) find the barriers of students in concluding the narrative text content; (3) knowing the efforts made by the teacher in developing inferential understanding of students. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method. The subjects in this study were students in grade VI SD Mutiara Bunda in the Bandung city. Data collection methods in this study are using tests, interviews and documentation. The results of this study are (1) the inferential understanding ability of the sixth grade students of SD Mutiara Bunda is included in the low category; (2) the resistance of students in concluding the contents of the story is that students find it difficult to rewrite the story in a coherent way; (3) the efforts made by the teacher in developing students' inferential understanding of the narrative text discourse are guiding students in reading comprehension and providing motivation to students.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the level of problem-solving ability and a mistake in doing mathematical problem solving test based on Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) on Integrated Islamic Junior High School (SMPIT) in Bandung. The method used in this study was a survey with a qualitative-quantitative descriptive approach. The population was the 2nd grade students from three schools of SMPIT which represents the category of top, middle and bottom. The data collection technique using is test, interview and documentation. The results showed that (1) Based on the TIMSS assessment categories as much as 64% of students are still in the low category, moderate 9%, 9% higher and 26% is very high. (2) Mistaken done by the student because (a) a lack of understanding of the mathematical problem in understanding the problem and troubleshooting steps, (b) students are not accurate in the calculation, (c) problem solving strategy is less precise, and (d) student does not check re-count results. We conclude that the level of problem solving ability of students SMPIT in Bandung is still low.

Abstract

Writing skills are the last skills mastered after listening, speaking and reading skills. In the digital era, students can access various types of writing through various media such as mobile phone. This research was conducted to find out the skill of writing essays description about technological equipment in the digital era. The researcher gave a test writing essay description of mobile phones in class IV public elementary schools in the city of Surakarta, Central Java. The description desk is reviewed from an analysis of the use of spelling and vocabulary. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive. The results showed that there were still many students who did not pay attention to the use of spelling in writing. Spelling use errors especially in the use of capital letters, use of a dots and commas, and writing absorption words. The vocabulary used by most students is a non-standard word. The use of a second language also influences students' essays. Thus, it can be concluded that the skills of fourth grade students in writing description essays are still low.

Abstract

One of the objectives of elementary school social studies learning is that students have the basic ability to think logically and critically, curiosity, inquiry, problem solving, and ability in social life. Therefore students are expected to develop the ability to think creatively by conducting inquiry learning to increase high curiosity. But in the application of learning, in general what is done by the teacher is only based on existing learning, there are students who are not active and less creative in the implementation of social studies learning. The purpose of this research is to explain the inquiry based learning to improve students' creative thinking skills in elementary school social studies learning. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research method. The subjects of this study were fourth grade students in one elementary school in Bandung City with a total of 32 students. After being analyzed, the results obtained from this study indicate that the inquiry based learning can improve students 'creative thinking skills in elementary school social studies learning, it is indicated by 1) students' curiosity becomes higher; 2) Students can have active discussion and questioning.

Abstract

This research was carried out on the basis of the low ability to read aloud students through the Big Book media as a learning medium based on the experience and knowledge of students. The purpose of this research is to improve the ability to read aloud and the ability to communicate through the big book media as a medium. This research was conducted using a dia tampan strategy learning. This study also uses research methods, namely Experimental Research on students of class I SDIT Cendekia Purwakarta, Purwakarta Regency. The indicator for the development of the big book media used is to improve the reading experience, errors and truths from large writings and illustrations, ideas for displaying books (book packaging display), as well as general ledger activities (in Umar). This Experimental Research was carried out 6 times. The results of this study indicate that the application of dia tampan strategy learning can improve the ability to read aloud and the communication skills of students with the big book media as a learning medium. In this study the creativity of students needs to be developed in particular the regional potential.

Abstract

As a result of interaction with various everyday phenomena, students often have alternative conceptions that are not in accordance with scientific conceptions. One of the concepts in the theme of water is water dissolving various substances. This study aims to identify changes in elementary school students' conception of the concept. This research uses descriptive method. The study involved 16 fifth graders at one of the schools in the city of Bandung. Students obtain a POE (Predict-Observe-Explain) learning strategy assisted by KIT to experiment with the properties of water. The research instruments included prediction questions (answered by students before the experiment), observation questions (answered by students after observing the experiment, and six-tier diagnostic tests (answered after receiving a scientific explanation from the teacher). The collected data were processed quantitatively to describe the conception of the students The results showed that the experimental observation activities and teacher explanations could increase the number of students who understood the scientific conception of the concept that water dissolved various substances, indicating that the POE assisted learning strategy of KIT experiments properties of water can improve mastery of concepts.

Abstract

Contextual Group Guided Discovery (CGGD) is a learning approach developed based on the philosophy of social-constructivist. This approach developed to support teacher in designing lesson with creating a learning environment that builds students competence required for 21st-century skills. We develop this learning approach by collaborating on principles of 1) contextual teaching, 2) Collaborative learning, and 3) Guided discovery learning. This learning approach developed using research and development (R&D) procedure of ADDIE (Dick & Carry, 1996). The result from our study is a syntax that describes all about CGGD learning approach.
