Abstract

Pembelajaran merupakan sebuah proses yang kompleks yang menuntut para guru agar kreatif demi tercapainya tujuan pembelajaran. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan implemantasi dan efektifitas dari “reciprocal teaching technique” untuk meningkatkan pemahaman siswa dalam membaca teks descriptive pada siswa kelas X di MA Ma’arif NU Sadang, Kebumen. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas dengan dua siklus yang masing-masing terdiri dari perencanaan, tindakan, observasi, dan refleksi. Data berupa hasil test yang menunjukkan peningkatan kemampuan siswa dalam membaca. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan “reciprocal teaching technique” dalam pembelajaran pada siswa kelas x MA Ma’arif NU Sadang Kebumen terbukti dapat meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa. Hal ini dilakukan dengan cara melakukan modelling strategi fab four pada siklus I dan memacu siswa untuk menggunakan strategi fab four pada kelompok-kelompok kecil secara lebih mandiri pada siklus II. Peningkatan pembelajaran ditunjukkkan dengan pemerolehan nilai rata-rata hasil tes siswa yang mengalami peningkatan dari 73.9 pada siklus I dan 81.87 pada siklus II. Artinya, reciprocal teaching technique layak digunakan sebagai salah satu solusi guru untuk membantu peningkataan hasil pembelajaran siswa. Abstract

Abstrak Listening adalah salah satu keterampilan yang harus dikuasai dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Bagaimanapun, belajar Listening sangat penting karena dapat membantu membangun pondasi untuk belajar keterampilan lainnya. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan kesulitan belajar Listening yang paling sering dihadapi mahasiswa di Universitas Ma’arif Nahdlatul Ulama Kebumen. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Universitas Ma’arif Nahdlatul Ulama Kebumen. Tipe penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data yang dikumpulkan dalam bentuk gambar dan kata. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa yang telah mendapatkan pelajaran Listening dan terdaftar sebagai mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan di Universitas Ma’arif Nahdlatul Ulama Kebumen. Hasil penelitian ini adalah sebagai berikut: terdapat lima permasalahan yang menyebabkan mahasiswa mengalami kesulitan dalam belajar dan melakukan Listening. (1) Speakers berbicara terlalu cepat. (2) Keterbatasan kosa kata yang dimiliki siswa dalam aktivitas atau latihan Listening, menyebabkan siswa sulit menangkap kata-kata dengan jelas dalam pelajaran Listening. (3) Kurang konsentrasi dalam Listening. (4) mahasiswa merasa audio speaker tidak jelas. (5) sedikitnya waktu untuk belajar dan praktek Listening. Abstract

The aims of this research were to describe how the students’ participation in speaking learning process by using drilling technique and to improve the students’ speaking ability in the speaking learning process through drilling technique. This research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). The population of this research is the X grade of MM A SMK Ma’arif 1 Kebumen in the academic year 2019/2020 which is consisted of 36 students. This research was conducted in two cycles which each cycle consists of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research finding showed in qualitative and quantitative data. In qualitative data showed that before treatment, the contributions of the students were low, but after treatment most of them were contributed to the lesson. They also did not want to be voluntary when the teacher asked questions but, after treatment they became active to answer the questions and participated actively with the lesson. In quantitative data showed that the mean points of their participation point was 33, in pre-test was 41,6, from post-test 1 was 60,5 and in the post-test 2 was 78,9. It can be concluded that from the data of observation, pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2 the points of students’ participation were improved. Moreover, based on the table of speaking score, in pre-test the mean points of their speaking score was 58,6, from post-test 1 the mean points of their speaking score was 72,9 and in the post-test 2 the mean points of their speaking score was 80,1. It can be concluded that drilling technique could improve the students’ participation in speaking at the X grade of MM A SMK Ma’arif 1 Kebumen. Therefore, it is recommended that: (1) it is better for teachers to apply this method in the teaching speaking; and (2) future researchers can conduct research in another topic discussion and different English language skill. Keyword: Participation, Speaking, Drilling Technique Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menggambarkan bagaimana partisipasi berbicara siswa dalam proses pembelajaran dengan menggunakan drilling teknik dan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam proses pembelajaran melalui drilling teknik. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Populasi penelitian ini adalah kelas X MM A SMK Ma'arif 1 Kebumen pada tahun akademik 2019/2020 yang terdiri dari 36 siswa. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam dua siklus dimana setiap siklus terdiri dari perencanaan, tindakan, pengamatan, dan refleksi. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan dalam data kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Dalam data kualitatif menunjukkan bahwa sebelum adanya tindakan kelas, kontribusi siswa rendah, tetapi setelah adanya tindakan kelas sebagian besar dari mereka berkontribusi pada pelajaran. Mereka juga tidak mau dengan sukarela menjawab ketika guru mengajukan pertanyaan tetapi, setelah adanya tindakan kelas mereka menjadi aktif untuk menjawab pertanyaan dan berpartisipasi aktif dengan pelajaran. Dalam data kuantitatif menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata dari poin partisipasi mereka adalah 33, pada pre-test adalah 41,6, dari post-test 1 adalah 60,5 dan pada post-test 2 adalah 78,9. Selain itu, berdasarkan nilai berbicara, pada pre-test poin rata-rata skor berbicara mereka adalah 58,6, dari post-test 1 poin rata-rata skor berbicara mereka adalah 72,9 dan pada post-test 2 poin rata-rata dari skor berbicara mereka adalah 80,1. Dari hasil data diatas, dapat disimpulkan bahwa drilling teknik dapat meningkatkan partisipasi siswa dalam berbicara di kelas X MM A SMK Ma'arif 1 Kebumen. Oleh karena itu, direkomendasikan bahwa: (1) lebih baik bagi guru untuk menerapkan metode ini dalam pengajaran berbicara; dan (2) peneliti lain nantinya dapat melakukan penelitian dengan topik lain dan keterampilan bahasa Inggris yang berbeda. Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mengetahui kemampuan penulisan teks deskriptif siswa dengan menggunakan metode Think-Talk-Write (TTW), (2) mencari perbedeaan antara siswa yang menggunkan metode Think-Talk-Write (TTW) dan siswa yang tidak menggunakan menggunkan metode Think-Talk-Write. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen dengan menggunakan desain one group pretest-posttest dengan melakukan 2 kali pertemuan untuk treatment, 2 x 40 menit untuk setiap pertemuan. Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas VII SMP Islam Ulil Albab Kebumen yang berjumlah 28 siswa. Sampel penelitian ini menggunakan simple random ialah semua siswa kelas VII. Penelitian ini menggunakan instrumen tes yaitu pretest dan posttest. Setelah dilakukan uji-t terlihat bahwa selisih rata-rata menunjukan perbedaan signifikan antara hasil dari pretest dan posttest. Hasil rata-rata pada posttest ialah 70,42 lebih besar dari pada nilai score pretets yaitu 51,82. Oleh karena itu dapat disimpulkan bahwa strategi Think-Talk-Write mempengaruhi nilai skor menjadi lebih baik dalam pembelajaran menulis teks deskriptif kelas VII SMP Islam Ulil Albab Kebumen. Kata kunci: pengaruh, menulis, teks deskriptif, Think-talk-Write Abstract The aimed of the research are (1) to obtain the information of students’ ability in writing a descriptive text by using Think-Talk-Write (TTW), (2) to find out the information the significant difference in students’ ability in writing descriptive text between the students who are taught by using Think-Talk-Write (TTW) and the students who are not using Think-Talk-Write of seventh grade SMP Islam Ulil Albab Kebumen. The methodology of this research was using one group pretest-posttest design with the treatment in 2 meetings, 2 x 40 minutes for each meeting. The sample was seventh class consisting of 28 students. The sample was taken by using simple random which all member of the population seventh grade. The instruments that used were pre-test and post-test. %. From the data analysis, the finding showed significant difference between the results it of pre-test and post-test. The mean of the post-test score (70,42) higher than the mean of pre-test score (51,82). It means there is any significance between pre-test and post-test, because the value significance (2-tale) less 0.05, so the null hypothesis was rejected. Abstract

Some challenges are faced by college students in dealing with writing in English. It was worse for collage students who did not have English as their main subject. Students admitted that they did not have special time to practice writing in English. It made students had difficulties in writing in English since learning writing in English without practice would never be successful. Those became big obstacles for college students as writing is one of important English skill. This study aimed to overcome that problem by using critical reviews. Critical reviews could become a media to improve English  writing skill. This study was a classroom action research. The data analysis procedures in this study were categorized into quantitative and qualitative data. Qualitative data was taken from interview and quantitative data were taken from tests. The result of the study showed that critical reviews could become the effective alternative media to improve English writing skill. It was proven by the improvement of the students’ mean score category from pretest and post-test.  The mean score in content aspect improved from 18.01 became 22.22. The mean score in organization aspect improved from 11.24 became 15.58. The mean score in vocabulary aspect improved from 10.82 became 14.24. The mean score in Language use aspect improved from 9.81 became 14.96. The mean score in mechanics aspect improved from 3.20 became 4.06. Besides, from the interviews students also showed positive attitude toward the use of critical reviews.   Beberapa tantangan dihadapi oleh mahasiswa dalam menulis dalam bahasa Inggris. Hal ini lebih buruk bagi mahasiswa yang tidak menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai mata pelajaran utama mereka. Mahasiswa mengaku tidak memiliki waktu khusus untuk berlatih menulis dalam bahasa Inggris. Hal ini membuat mahasiswa kesulitan dalam menulis berbahasa Inggris karena belajar menulis dalam bahasa Inggris tanpa latihan tidak akan pernah berhasil. Hal tersebut menjadi kendala besar bagi mahasiswa karena menulis merupakan salah satu keterampilan bahasa Inggris yang penting. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut dengan menggunakan tinjauan kritis. Tinjauan kritis dapat menjadi media untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis dalam bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas. Prosedur analisis data dalam penelitian ini dikategorikan menjadi data kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Data kualitatif diambil dari wawancara dan data kuantitatif diambil dari tes. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tinjauan kritis dapat menjadi media alternatif yang efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis dalam bahasa Inggris. Hal itu dibuktikan dengan peningkatan kategori nilai rata-rata siswa dari pre-test dan post-test. Rerata skor aspek content/isi meningkat dari 18,01 menjadi 22,22. Rerata skor aspek organization/pengaturan meningkat dari 11,24 menjadi 15,58. Nilai rata-rata aspek vocabulary/kosakata meningkat dari 10,82 menjadi 14,24. Nilai rata-rata aspek penggunaan bahasa meningkat dari 9,81 menjadi 14,96. Nilai rata-rata aspek mechanics/mekanik meningkat dari 3,20 menjadi 4,06. Selain itu, dari wawancara siswa juga menunjukkan sikap positif terhadap penggunaan tinjauan kritis.   Kata Kunci: Peningkatan, Keterampilan Menulis dalam Bahasa Inggris, Tinjauan Kritis

Abstract

The research paper is entitled “Analysis on GraError of Student’s Writing Descriptive Text”. The aims of the research were to find out what kinds of grammatical error made by eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Pasirjambu in writing descriptive text and to analyze what causes of the grammatical error in writing descriptive text. The sample of the data was collected by giving writing test , which consisted of 31 students. Qualitative research was used by the researcher as the research method. From the total of 246 sentences of the samples, the research finding showed that misformation was the highest error that students made in writing descriptive text. The percentage of the errors was 104 (53%) from the total error 196. Whereas, the lowest percentage of the error was found in misordering with the percentage 19 (10%). On the other hand, there were some causes of the error made by students of the eight grade of Junior High School in writing descriptive text suc as the language interference, carelessness and translation. The highest cause of error on percentage 53% was found in first language interference. Meanwhile, the lowest cause of error was translation with the total percentage 10 %. It showed that the students still had difficulties in writing descriptive text. It was caused by the language interference, the second was Therefore, the teacher had to give the appropriate method for the students in teaching descriptive text and using appripiate media and interesting material to help them easy to understand the lesson. Abstract

Abstract Nathaniel is one of peripheral characters in the movie entitled ‘Enchanted’. In the beginning of the movie, he was the antagonist one. He is the accomplish of Queen Narissa. Nathaniel experienced a moment that open his eyes so that he against Queen Narissa. The change of Nathaniel’s character drew researcher’s attention so that she was interested in discussing his character. The purpose of this research is to identify and to find out inner conflict which influences Nathaniel’s actions and thoughts later in the movie ‘Enchanted’. Researcher used library research to analyze this film. Structural approach was used by researcher in order to collect data as well. Researcher found out that Nathaniel had interesting personality. He was so in love with Queen Narissa so he would anything for her. Nathaniel was also good at disguise and could adapt in totally different environment. His character was very different from the main character. Even though in the beginning of the movie Nathaniel was described as antagonist, in the end of the movie he changed his thought and defensed for the main character. That move showed everyone had good side in his/her heart. People can change over time. Keywords: character, film ‘Enchanted’, Nathaniel.

Abstract

Teaching vocabulary is one way to increase students' knowledge so they can make grammatical sentences. Teaching vocabulary must also be equipped with strategies that are suitable for students. Many strategies can be used by teachers. In vocabulary, there are many things that must be equated and good handling must be taken so that students can understand what vocabulary is. This research was conducted at MTs N 7 Kebumen. The subjects of this study were the English teachers in seventh grade. The purpose of this research is to find the strategies used by English teachers in teaching vocabulary. This research find out students' responses toward the application of teachers' strategies in teaching vocabulary to seventh grade students of MTs N 7 Kebumen. In the interview with an English teacher at MTs N 7 Kebumen, the researcher found out some obstacles experienced by the teacher. One of the obstacle was students have little vocabulary. Therefore the teacher used strategies which easily accepted by students. The teacher also felt not easy to teaching English. This research discusses about analysis the teachers’ strategies in teaching English vocabulary. This research method used descriptive qualitative to describe the strategy of English teachers in teaching vocabulary. The research focused on the strategies of the English teacher in teaching vocabulary in the classroom. The researcher used interview, docummentation, and questionnaire for data collection techniques. First, the researcher interviewed with English teacher. Second, the researcher conducted data analysis using pictures, lesson plans and syllabus as data docummentation. Third, the researcher also gave questionnaires to students in seventh grade MTs N 7 Kebumen using Google Forms. Based on the analysis, the results of the research are three findings that can be taken. First, there are some strategies used by teachers to teach vocabulary, namely presentation, translation, memorization, playing games, reading, pantomime, action, and body movements. Second, this research found out the media used to convey the material, the media used are real things, videos, pictures, English books of students. Third, the researcher found out students' responses with strategies used by the teacher. The researcher concluded that students can enjoy teaching and learning that the teacher gives. By using presentations, translations, memorization, playing games, words, mime, actions, and movements. Students also can remember new words more easily. Abstract

Virtual learning implementation obtained more exposure along with the pandemic situation in Indonesia. The drastic shift taken by the government policy made all formal institutions moved into the full-online course after trusted ordinary, face-to-face classroom routine for years. The purposes of this study are to reveal students' experience and possible challenges in implementing virtual learning at English Education Study Program. The method used in this research was qualitative design with a case study approach. The instruments of this research were questionnaire and interview. The results showed that students enjoyed more flexibility in learning and spent less time and energy to reach campus. They found the course quite challenging to cope with, but students experienced virtual learning as the necessary option in a pandemic situation. The most prominent challenges in this system are infrastructure-related (gadget, internet  connection) and learning arousement.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menyoroti penggunaan referensi dalam unsur perangkat kohesif dalam artikel berita berbahasa Inggris The Jakarta Post dan New York Time yang ditulis oleh orang Indonesia dan native Amerika. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi persamaan dan perbedaan penggunaan referensi personal, referensi demonstratif dan referensi komparatif. Metode penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Data diambil dari surat kabar online; Artikel The Jakarta Post dan New York Times. Ada 20 artikel yang dianalisis dalam penelitian ini, 10 artikel dari masing-masing surat kabar online di setiap bidang surat kabar tersebut. Data dianalisis menggunakan (Halliday dan Hasan's : 1976) teori kohesi. Hasil penelitian ini menjelaskan bahwa penggunaan referensi dalam artikel New York Time lebih tinggi daripada artikel The Jakarta Post. Jenis referensi yang paling dominan digunakan adalah referensi pribadi kedua artikel tersebut.
