Abstract

Ability to communicate orally in Foreign Language still meets some obstacles for language learners in Indonesia. It seems a hard task to do. The learning experiences on English subject are still not sufficient for the language learners to enable them to communicate in English orally. Some previous studies showed that the students external factors are the obstacle cause their inability to communicate in Foreign Language such as the lack of the vocabulary, law of motivation, the lack amount of practice and the monotonous teaching strategy. However, since the communication process is not only involving the physical aspect, the psychological aspects should be recognized as the potential factor that might hinder students ability to communicate orally in Foreign Language. The present study showed that the students psychological factors, namely apprehension plays the role hinder the students ability to communicate. The findings showed that there were four factors cause the students inability to communicate in English as foreign language, namely 1) the ability on language, 2) the lecturers evaluation, 3) the communication task type, and 4) lecturers feedback.

Abstract

This research was carried out based on researcher’s preliminary study at State Senior High School 2 Kuok at tenth grade in academic year 2016/2017. In this researcher use quasi experimental research with pottest only. The aim of this research is to find out the effectiveness of the use Hero Quest Strategy in teaching writing skills on recount text. The researcher took two classes as the samples were class X1 as the control group and class X2 as the experimental class. Total sampling technique we used by the researcher to take the sample. The technique of data collection was test. Meanwhile, to analyze the data, the researcher used Independent Samples T-test formula by using SPSS 20.0 Version. Based on the analysis data the result showed that the average student posttest in experimental class were 72.47, and in control class has average students posttest were 54.31. The researcher used T-test, the result of the average test calculating (T-test) 0.000. It was proved that this research was 0.000

Abstract

The students reading comprehension can be measured by test. One of them is by giving the text with consisting blanks, or a summary cloze test. This research is a descriptive research which describe the ability of the fourth semester students of English Study Program of FKIP of University of Riau in providing word(s) to complete a text. After analyzing the data of the students ability in providing word(s) to complete a text, the writer comes to the conclusions that the mean score of students is 58.7. It means that the level of ability of the fourth semester students of English Study Program of FKIP of University of Riau in providing words to complete a text is in mediocre level and most of them (23 out of students or 62.2%) are in good level.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the skills which are taught in English. It is intended to express our ideas or our thought. In teaching and learning activities, teaching speaking is possible to do by applying some speaking activities such as interview, discussion, role play, etc. The speaking activities are used based on the purpose of the learning outcome. The teacher have to be able to decide the appropriate speaking activities used in teaching speaking. However, some teachers are not accustomed with the variation of speaking activities. The tendency of using the discussion activity is still in use by the teacher. In this research the researcher found some speaking activities which were applied by the second year students at SMA N 2 Bangkinang namely interview, discussion, dialogue, question answer, and reporting. This research is descriptive research. There are three instruments used in this research, observation sheet, interview, and documentation. Technique used in analyze the data is based on three indicators of speaking activities. They are type of activity, organizational form, and instruction. The Findings found that from five kinds of speaking activities four of them were classified as communicative activities and the rest were classified as quasi pre communicative. Based on the organizational form, it was classified as group work, pair work, and whole class teaching. Meanwhile, based on the instruction given, mostly the teacher used target language (English), but at the second meeting is mostly used combination (mother tongue and target language). Furthermore, based on the length of instruction, mostly the teacher used Long instruction. And the last one, based on support for instruction at the first meeting, the teacher used paralinguistic, written clues, and restatement. Meanwhile at the second meeting, the teacher used paralinguistic, visual, written clues, and restatement.

Abstract

This research was conducted to improve students’ vocabulary mastery using cooperative learning method type teams game tournament (TGT) at the second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Pomalaa. This study used a classroom action research (CAR) design. The procedure of CAR consisted of preliminary of the research, planning, implementation, observation, analysis and reflection. Observation sheets and vocabulary test were used to gather the data. This research consisted of two cycles in which there was an improvement from cycle one to cycle two. The improvement could be seen on the result of the vocabulary test in cycle one and cycle two. It was found out that there was an improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery from cycle one to cycle two. In the cycle one, the percentage of students who passed the test was 47.36% and in cycle two the percentage of the students who passed the vocabulary test was 89.47%.

Abstract

This research aims to describe how students' writing skills in expressing opinion text by using the Google Classroom application and to find out problems in the online class by using Google Classroom at eleventh grade of SMAN 2 Kuok academic year 2019/2020. The method used is descriptive research. The subjects of this research consists of 34 students of class XI IIS and class XI MIPA. The researchers used two instruments, those were test and questionnaire. Based on, the analysis of the research showed that the average of the students' achievement in writing was 51. The results of the questionnaire 8 or 24% of students were able to learn to expression opinion texts well using Google Classroom. Meanwhile, 13 or 38% did not understand writing opinion texts. In addition, the test results shows that students' writing skills in expressing opinion text by using Google Classroom were are at a weak level. From the questionnaire data, it shows that students do not understand and find it difficult to write text to expression opinion by using Google Classroom and have difficulty getting a good network because of the data package they use. Students are often late in sending assignments to the teacher because of the network problems used. It can be concluded that students' writing skills in expressing opinion texts using Google Classroom are still low.

Abstract

The successful English learners are determined by their ability to communicate in English in daily activities, especially in the teaching and learning process However, it is not a simple task. Some English learners are still struggle to use English to communicate since English is used as Foreign Language in Indonesia. It is experienced even the students have learned English for long years. The university students, English Department students also need struggle to communicate in English. One of the handicaps in acquiring the ability to communicate in a foreign language is called communication apprehension. The individuals fear in facing the communication either real or anticipated causes the students to avoid the communication activity. Then, it resulted the less progress of the students in using the language. Oral communication apprehension is experienced by everyone, especially foreign language learners. It seems as a potential inhibitor for the students to develop their competence and skills in communication. In fact, the existence of communication apprehension are not realized. Unfortunately, the foreign language learners are not consider on it.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to know the effect of using Project-based Learning (PjBL) method on students’ writing skill of second year students at SMAN 2 Tapung Hilir. The design of this research was experimental research which was deal with two variables. The first variable was project based learning method as independent variable and the second variable was students’ writing skill as dependent variable. The sample of this research was 61 students of second year students at SMAN 2 Tapung Hilir. Further, there were two classes of this research. There were experimental class and control class. To obtain the data, the researcher gave the students explanation text as writing test. The data was analyzed by using paired sample T-test through SPSS 22 version program. Based on result shown that towas8.682 and df was 29. It could be analyzed that to is higher than ttable, of 0,05 on the significance rtable(8.682>0.367), that null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that there is significant effect of using PjBL method on students’ writing skill of second year students at SMAN 2 Tapung Hilir.

Abstract

This research was taken based on the students problem to memorize, apply, understand and comprehend the English texts. The students also cannot interpret the authors message. The purpose of this research is to improve the students reading comprehension of the first semester of English Study Program of STKIP Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai. The participants of this research are the first semester students of English Study Program of STKIP Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai. The classroom action research was done in four steps plan, action, observation, and reflection in three cycles. This study shows that Jigsaw Strategy can improve the students reading comprehension. Based on the data, the percentage improve significantly from the first to the third test. The first test, the percentage was 18.92%, then at the second test was 27.03% and at the third test was 45.21%. At the second and third cycles, there was no students could achieved this level, but the percentage directly increase to 35.14%. Therefore, the students reading comprehension can be improved through Jigsaw Strategy.`

Abstract

This research is aimed at figuring out the students’ difficulties in learning English. Besides, it is also expected that the learning process become more meaningful. Subjects of the research are the enrolled odd semester students in academic year 2017/2018. The data collection method employed documentation, test, observation, and interview. Documentation was used to get the students’ data as the subject of the research, the test was used to get the data on the students’ achievement in learning English, the observation was used to get the objective condition in English learning processes and to expose the factors contribute to the learning process. The interview was used to explore the students’ difficulties in learning English. The students’ difficulties in learning English focused on the ability to speak and to listen. Mastering listening is the most difficult skills to be acquired by the students, it was found that the students’ average score is 58.33 or 84% students cannot answer the question properly. The second problem is mastering speaking skills, it was found that the students’ average score is 61.25 or 50% students cannot answer the question properly. The factors contribute to the students’ difficulties were: (1) the less of English practice;(2) the students were not actively participate in the learning process; (3) the students were passive;(4) The students did not take a note on the students’ explanation; (5) the students were not active in responding the teachers’ question and shares the opinion.
