The journal publishes research papers in the all the fields of language, language teaching, and linguistics such as, Phonetics and Phonology, Morphology, Lexicology, Syntax and Language Typology, Semantic, Pragmatics, Discourse Analysis, Grammar Analysis, Historical Linguistics, Dialectology and Language Evolution, Applied Linguistics, Biolinguistics, Clinical Linguistics, Neurolinguistics, Computational Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, Forensic Linguistics, Language Teaching, Language Development, Translation, and other related studies of language. Since 2017, all papers submitted to the journal should be written in good English. Authors for whom English is not their native language are encouraged to have their paper checked before submission for grammar and clarity. English language and copyediting services can be provided by English Faculty . The work should not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. The official language of the manuscript to be published in journal Lingua is English. Lingua Journal is published two times a year by English Education Study Program Faculty of Teaching and Educational Sciences As-Syafi’iyah Islamic University of Jakarta. The journal welcomes articles on English language teaching and research. Articles should be in English, typed double-spaced on quarto-size paper. Abstract

As a foreign language, some students still get some difficulties to learn English, especially in English Reading. An attractive media such as Picture Story Book is expected to develop the students reading comprehension ability. The research method that was used in this research was true experimental and the research design was pot test only control group design. To gather the data the researcher used instrument in the form of multiple choice 30 questions. The samples of this research was grade ten consisting 66 students, which is taken from the population by using cluster random sampling technique. The students are divided into two classes, 33 in experimental class and 33 in control class. The students of experimental class were taught by using Picture Story Book while the control class were taught without Picture Story Book. The analysis used SPSS based independent sample T-Test Formula produced significance 0.000 since the significance (2-tailed) value was smaller than (<) Alpha 0.05 Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. Accordingly the research concludes that there is significant effect of using Picture Story Book on Grade Ten Students’ Reading comprehension at MAN 9 Jakarta in the academic year 2019/2020

Abstract

The goal of this research is to elaborate on the implementation of CALL subject in English as a Foreign Language Instructions at a higher education level. As one of the four pillars of a university’s development program, the use of ICT in the teaching and learning process has gained significant attention from higher education institutions; thus, through this research, the integration of CALL subject in English education curriculum and instruction is designed. The design then offered to be implemented in the English education program at a higher education level. Studies in CALL field have developed significantly in determining the effect of the technology use in language learning; thus, it is considered significant to be included in the English Education curriculum. This research is targeting the mastery of technology by student teachers’ literacy to prepare them for becoming English teachers who understand the technology and able to use it in the instructions setting. This is important considering that the students nowadays are born in the technology era. This paper discusses the implementation process of the CALL subject and the perspectives of EFL teachers and students towards the subject.

Abstract

Student of 21st century have a basket of challenge. They must be able to think critically, to communicate effectively, to collaborate respectfully, and to think creatively. Those four Cs are not a school subject that will be teach independently. Yet, all of them are integrated on each subject that the students' learnt. Among those four, critical thinking is an emergency necessity for college students to help them develop their original thesis report. Through a classroom action research, Socratic Seminar will introduce in Exploring Poetry and Prose subject to foster students' critical thinking skills. The aims of this paper is to find out to what extend Socratic Seminar foster students’ critical thinking. Observation, interview, and questionnaire are used to collect the data. To sum up, Socratic Seminar successfully developed students' thinking from equilibrium to disequilibrium to a more sophisticated equilibrium. Keywords: Critical thinking, Socratic seminar

Abstract

This study specifically discusses the motivation make young generations want to read fanfiction in English while in the fact Indonesian fanfiction is as good as English fanfiction. This study will examine how fanfiction can influence people learning English. This study is used a qualitative method The participants of this study consists of five participants. The participants are the ones who’s read English Fanfiction the data will be collected by interview and analyze by using qualitative method. The interview will be conducted via email for 30 minutes per person. This study mention gender, age, and fandom for the data.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out whether or not there is significant effect of crosswords puzzles on Grade Ten Students’ Vocabulary Learning Outcome. The research method used in this research was quantitative true-experimental, and the design was post-test only control group design, meaning the data collected were only through post-test given to both experimental and control groups after treatments. To collect data for the study, the researcher used instrument in the form of objective, multiple choice , numbering 30 question items for both experimental class and control class that have been tried out in grade ten at experimental class. The scores obtained from the try-out class were used to analyze the validity, reliability, discrimination power and difficulty index of each question item in the instrument. The results of test obtained from samples were used to analyze the data using statistical formulas of Independent, t-test, preceded by normality and homogeneity tests as the pre-requisites to data analysis. The analysis using SPSS-based t-test produced significance (Sig.) score of 0.001, which was smaller than (<) Alpha 0.05, while the score of tobserved /to is higher than the score of t-table 4.10. Since the significance (Sig.) score of 0.001 is smaller than (<) Alpha 0.05, and the score of tobserved /to is higher than (>) the score of t-table 4.10, Ho is rejected and HA is accepted. Accordingly the research concludes that there is significant effect of crossword on grade ten students’ vocabulary learning. The keyword: crossword, vocabulary learning outcome

Abstract

A wide range of English teaching and learning approaches have emerged due to information and communication technology advancement. According to Constantine (2007), Podcast was first known in 2004, and it is defined as an internet audio blogging or internet audio publishing. Research on podcasting pedagogy suggests that podcasting helps learners boost their English language skills and support areas such as grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. The results of the research consist of 180 students of grade eleven at SMA 1 MAJA and consisting of 6 classes. To determine the sample of this research, the writer used Cluster Random Sampling. The result of the highest score of the pre-test was 75 and the post-test was 90. Learning through podcasts as a learning tool that can attract students' attention and provide information, knowledge and enrich vocabulary.

Abstract

English is the most used language in the world. Due to this reason, there are some variations are exist. For example are American and British variety of English. These varieties have some differences. It is very important for us to learn and know about its differences to make us easier in learning English. The purpose of this research is to find out the English students’ knowledge of American and British English. The Data were collected by two instruments, firstly is the tests about American and British variety of English differences in spelling and vocabulary and secondly is questionnaire about their usage and preferences of English varieties by using qualitative method. The participants in this study were 55 English students ​​at As-syafi’iyah Islamic University which have been learned about grammar, pronunciation, spelling and vocabulary course. Based on this research, it shows that students are already know about American and British English, but somehow they got some difficulties in distinguish The American and British English. But, they were able to answer all the tests although the result shows that not all their answers are correct. The research was concluded that the students used both English in American and English in British.

Abstract

The phenomenon that emerge in the schools, particularly in Junior High School, just few students have a good ability in writing. Most of them have limited ability in writing. They usually take plenty of time if their teacher gives them a writing assignment. The students’ English achievement, especially in their writing ability is not sufficient. The students’ writing achievement is still low. One method that is considered to be effective to apply in language classroom is Guided Composition. It is a kind of writing composition which trains the students to write step by step. Composition might be defined as an act of putting sentences together (Spencer, 1967: 67). Constructing composition is not easy since it is a long process. Meanwhile, guided is giving the step or the way to do something.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using kids songs to teach listening on young learner viewed from students’ motivation at Azhar Tahfidz. The importance of implementing songs in teaching English as a second language (ESL) showing that they can be very effective in developing student’s listening. By using kids song, students are expected to understand more in listening. Song are appreciated for their linguistic, cultural and entertaining features and they are precious language learning materials. They can be used to teach and develop every aspect of language. This paper deals with theoretical explanations of young learner listening skills. It also discusses how songs can influence motivation for English language listening. The participants were two differents groups from AzharTahfidz. Their motivation was examined with and without implementing song. Analysis of the data using a t– test suggested that using songs in teaching English for young learners was significantly effective in raising their motivation to learn the language. The participants were students of fourth grade. In total, they were 28 students divided into two groups 14 students in a control group and 14 in an experimental group. They were almost at the same age 9 years old. They were 9 males and 5 females in the control and 8 males and 6 females in the experimental group.

Abstract

This research is about the Extensive Reading Strategy to interest Students in reading comprehension. Extensive Reading is reading as much as possible that the material of the text not be chosen by the teacher, but the students can choose the title of the books, novel by themselves. The researcher believes that this strategy can make the students more interested in learning English, especially in reading comprehension. This research did about two months in SMA PELITA TIGA NO. 3 Jakarta. The population of this research consists of 120 students sitting in four classes. The samples of the research were taken by the means of cluster random sampling from the population, class XI IPS 2 as the control class and XI IPA 1 as the experimental class, with the total sample number of 60 students consisted of 30 students each class. The adopted research methodology was quasi-experimental research, with the research design post-test only control group design. To collect data the writer used instruments of question items. The statistic method used to analyse the data was a T-test using SPSS through the testing of Null Hypotheses, which was preceded by the normality test and homogeneity test as the pre-requisite to the data analysis. The result of the test showed that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted which proves that there is significant effect of the use of Extensive Reading on grade eleven students’ Reading Comprehension at SMA PELITA TIGA NO. 3 Jakarta in the academic year of 2019/2020.
