Abstract

This study is focused on the change in new behaviour and routines on the issues of safe water and sanitation in Indonesia. The aim of this study is to explain the deconstruction of people's consciousness and societal knowledge on wastewater treatment plant (IPAL) facilities and the resulting behavioural change. By positioning programmes of safe water, sanitation, and the local value of healthy living as the “life projects”, this article attempts to re-examine the position of local communities in this project. Life projects are programmes that adhere to the local histories of communities in perceiving ‘development’. Life projects are premised on densely and uniquely woven 'threads' of landscapes, memory, expectations, and desire. In this regard, this article tries to disclose the participation of local communities in planning, managing and integrating local values and global visions of proper sanitation development programs in their villages. This study was a micro one conducted at Sumberdawesari village, in Pasuruan, East Java. Sumberdawesari is one of the IWINS-USAID’s pilot projects of the communal IPAL programme. This research utilizes the life history approach with the data collection techniques of observation, biography, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews. The nature of this study focuses on the desire to share information about low-level experiences of local communities regarding the availability and the sustainable management of water and sanitation toward a healthy and self-reliance settlement. This research finds the increased awareness of the population in implementing sanitation development programs at the level of habitus, individual, household, community, and social structure through the dimensions of contextual, managerial and technical knowledge.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze national policies on food and nutrition in the family food fulfillment practices in Aceh. Various programs to address food and nutrition problems have been made but nutrition problems have not been successfully resolved. The results of the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riset Kesehatan Dasar, Riskesdas) showed that the prevalence of stunting for baby under two years old in Aceh is the highest in Indonesia. This article was based on Foucauldian theory and a qualitative approach, through interviews with 40 families having children under five years old to recall the type of food consumed by all family members for 3 x 24 hours The results show that there is a gap between the practice of fulfilling family food in Aceh and national policies on food and nutrition. The practice of fulfilling family food is focused on carbohydrates and animal protein, while the government promotes the fulfillment of a balanced diet between carbohydrates and proteins (animal and vegetable) with vegetables and fruits. The gap occurs because of differences in the discourses of the power of the body and benefits of food. The community understands that food aims to make the body able to function properly (body productivity discourse). Meanwhile, the government aims for the human body to grow and develop ideally to avoid degenerative diseases (healthy body discourse). Family food fulfillment practices depend on the power of women’s knowledge, especially mothers’ who have the main role in fulfilling family food.

Abstract

KP2C has implemented a flood early warning system through Whatsapp groups since 2016. However, in the areas of Bojong Kulur and Jatirasa, which are the focus of KP2C information and downstream of the Cileungsi and Cikeas rivers, there are still losses for members. The interaction illustrates that achievement of KP2C’s goals has not been maximized, so the meaning of effectiveness is important to explored sociologically with variables thought to be related to it such as the digital divide, social structure’s form, and social capital’s level. This study uses a postpositivism paradigma and survey methods with data qualitative as a support. Respondents in this study were obtained by purposive technique with 40 individuals in RW 24 Bojong Kulur and RW 8 Jatirasa Village as affected areas. The results showed the majority of all variables were dominated by the medium category. Digital divide variable is strongly and positively related to social structure. Both are simultaneously also related to social capital. Therefore, it can be said that if the role of the early warning system is to be effective, then the three variables must clearly be considered.

Abstract

The collaborative rice field management that has been carried out in Ciracap Village, Ciracap District, Sukabumi Regency, aims to achieve the level of food security of farmer households. The stakeholders have roles as capital providers, facilitators, and off-takers. This study aims to analyze the extent to which the effectiveness of collaboration can provide positive changes to the level of food security of farmer households in Ciracap Village. This research started from February to August 2021, using mixed methods. The data collected was obtained based on a survey method with a questionnaire instrument for quantitative methods, as well as observations and in-depth interviews for qualitative methods. Quantitative data were processed using a multivariate test with MANOVA analysis, while qualitative data is processed by data reduction, data presentation, and data verification. The results showed that the collaborative process of rice field management was based on a high level of trust between the closest stakeholders. However, based on the administrative data that is not on field conditions, the effectiveness of the collaboration process on the level of household food security is less effective. The effectiveness of collaboration tends to be weak because the program implementation has not yet fully guaranteed the fulfillment of food for farmer households. This is indicated by the socio-economic conditions of farmers that have not changed positively because the quality and quantity of rice production are not in line with the target.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the social construction process of eco-theology-based waste management among the Rehobot church congregation in Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara. This study uses the phenomenological method, especially Berger and Luckmann’s theory on the social construction of reality. The results of the study indicate that there is a relationship between waste management and the congregation’s beliefs, where the congregation interprets waste management activities as a form of obedience to God. As servants of Allah, humans must be able to overcome waste as one of the social problems of society, by turning waste into “bread”. Waste is seen as a challenge to human beings; if it can be managed wisely, it can be a blessing that is beneficial to life. Waste management activities in the congregation are the result of social construction that occurs through three dialectical phases. The externalization phase is marked by various products of waste management activities by the congregation, such as managing waste through waste banks, sorting waste, utilizing waste into compost, forming waste volunteers, and reducing the use of single-use plastic waste. The phase of objectivation occurs when the products of waste management activities that occur in the externalization phase undergo a reification process. The product of activity then undergoes institutionalization and is strengthened by the presence of religious legitimacy. The phase of internalization occurs when the procession of re-absorption of various waste management activity products of the congregations that have been objectivated, into the structures of subjective awareness.

The sampling technique used snowball sampling with samples of children aged 12-18 years from families of migrant workers, both circular and international. The total respondents were 120 children whose data were collected through a self-administered method.
