Abstract

This research analyzes about the suffragettes’ story in campaigning women’s suffrage as reflected in Suffragette film. The purposes of this research are to explain bad treatments over women in male – dominated society, to describe the struggles of the suffragettes in suffragettes’ campaign pursuing the “votes for women” and the related history facts toward suffragettes’ campaign. In analyzing the research, the writer uses feminist literary criticism and some supporting theories. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data is formed in words and pictures. The data is analyzed through four procedures: identifying, classifying, analyzing and making conclusion. The results of this research are bad treatments over women in male – dominated society: women’s stereotyping, inequality in the workplace, and women’s subordination in marriage. Later, the writer finds out the struggle and the suffering of these women in campaigning women’s suffrage: consciousness – raising, peaceful campaign, and militant campaign; the last, the writer finds some related history facts toward suffragettes’ campaign as reflected in Suffragette film. Key words: Struggle, Suffering, Suffragette, Women’s suffrage campaign, Feminism, History

Abstract

This study analyzes the moral values contained in the film Nine 2009. The purpose of this study is to describe the types of moral values and describe the impact of moral values contained in the film Nine in 2009.In this study, the writer uses a qualitative descriptive method proposed by Creswell (1994:45) which uses descriptive techniques to describe and analyze the data. The data were analyzed in several ways, namely identification, classification, analysis and conclusion. In this study, the writer uses the theory of moral values from Guerin (2005) and the theory of Webster (1981) as the basis for the types of moral values of the researcher's theory.From the results of the study obtained types of moral values such as courage, enthusiasm, kind, honesty, love and compassion, loyalty, love of peace, perseverance, sacrifice for others, self-confidence, and based on strong beliefs. on Webster's (1981) theory. In Nine, the writer finds six (7) courage, two (2) loyalty, two (2) love and compassion, three (3) sacrifices for others and two self-confidence. The writer also explains the impact of moral values on the film Nine. The writer finds two kinds of impacts, namely the good impact and the bad impact on the film Nine. One of the good effects is cohesiveness in friendship and the bad effect is selfishness that causes death. From the data obtained, the key that the most dominant type of moral value found in the 2009 film Nine is Courage. And the writer finds two kinds of good impacts and bad impacts.

Abstract

This research studies about The Social Class Differences Reflected on People’s Lives in The Snowpiercer Movie. The purposes of this research are: (1) to describe about the division of social class differences to people’s lives on the Snowpiercer movie and (2) to analyze the impacts of social class differences on people’s lives on the Snowpiercer movie. This research used qualitative research method. In analyzing the data the researcher uses Marxist theory (1950).            The researcher found some data that were divided into two classes of society. The first one is the upper class as the bourgeoisie, in bourgeoisie class the researcher found out nine data. The second is the lower class as proletariat, the researcher found out six data, each of which reveals about bourgeoisie social life, lifestyle and behavior. In addition, the researcher also found the impact for people’s lives in the Snowpiercer movie such as from all the data presented, it can be concluded that social class are divided into two main classes and differentiated through the behavior, social life, and their goods. And those things cause the impact for people’s life in Snowpiercer movie which ultimately caused the deaths of both classes. A cannibalism, rebellion, and even population reduction as the impact of social class differences.

Abstract

This research title is Psychoanalysis of The Main Character of The Joker Movie, analysed about psychoanalysis and kind of character of the main character in the Joker movie by Todd Phillips, this movie tells the story of a person with a psychological disorder who lives with his mother, he is a good boy and always takes care of his mother, works for his mother until finally he turns into a murderer because he is often bullied by people around him.         The method which is used in this research is descriptive qualitative method proposed by Bogdan and Biklen (1982) who state that the collected data which is used this method is in form of words as picture rather than numbers related to Joker Movie. The data is analysed through some ways: Identifying, Classifying, Analising, and Conclusion.                                    The result of this research are stated as follows: firstly, the personality of the main character that found in this movie there are id, ego, and superego. Secondly, from 20 data that found in the movie, the id is the most personality appearing in this movie., there is 7 data of id, 5 data of ego, and 2 data of super ego. Then writer also found 6 data kind of character of the main character there are flat character that appear in the beginning of the movie, round character that appear in the middle of the movie, protagonist that appear in the beginning of the movie, antagonist that change in the middle of the movie, and dynamic character, from the kind of characters above the round character is the dominant appear from the others, because the characterization of Arthur is always changing.

Abstract

This study analyzes the structure of the human personality in an animated film entitled Brave by Brenda Chapman. The purposes of this study are 1) to explain the system of human personality structure in the main character of Brave movie, 2) to describe the impact that occurs on the dominance of the personality structure that appears in the main character of the film Brave. In conducting this study, the method used was a qualitative descriptive proposed by Endraswara (2013). The data was presented in the form of phrases, sentences and pictures related to the personality and characterization of the main character, the data analyzed based on the psychological theory by Sigmund Freud which groups 3 systems of human personality. Based on the results of the study, the writer found some data which was divided into three (3) forms of the main character's personality structure, namely Id, Ego and Super Ego. The writer found (16) sixteen data of personality structure , there were (7) seven Id structures, (4 ) four Ego structures and (5) five Super Ego structures. The data variation of acquisition was influenced by the shape of the character type on the main character. In addition, the writer also explains the impact of the dominance of the personality structure on  main character where the dominance of the Id has a negative impact while the Ego and Super Ego have a positive impact. The impact is formed based on the principles of each personality structure, namely the principles of pleasure, reality, and morals. From the data shown, in the main character, it can be conclude that the personality structure of Id was found more. Namely the urge to act as desired with the aim of relieving a pressure in the main character. there was a change in the negative impact to be positive at the end of the story, this caused by the round type of character in the main character which affects the change in the attitude of the main character in the story of the Brave movie.

Abstract

Exploring Discursive Strategies to Represent Power in The 2020 Final Presidential Debate between Donald J. Trump and Joe Biden is a study that  analyzes the topic of political discourse, particularly focusing on discursive strategies used by the two presidential candidates. This research aims (1) to analyze the discursive strategies used by Donald Trump and Joe Biden in the final presidential debate; (2) to recognize the influence that these discursive strategies have on the 2020 final election results. The research applied a descriptive qualitative method, with the debate video as the data source. The data were utterances in the form of both candidates' words, phrases, and sentences. After being collected, the data were categorized and further analyzed based on Van Dijk’s approach of CDA (2003), in which he proposed 25 categories of discursive strategies in political discourse.The result of the study reveals some findings: First, out of 299 data of discursive strategies found in the debate, Donald Trump used 159 discursive strategies throughout the entire debate, with repetition as the most dominant one which was applied 17 times. Moreover, he did not apply any consensus and euphemism strategies. Meanwhile, Joe Biden only used 140 discursive strategies, with the number game as the most dominant strategy which appeared 20 times and he did not apply hyperbole in his utterances. Second, the writer found out that the two patterns of discursive strategies  influenced the 2020 US Presidential Election: (1) frequency and effectiveness of using discursive strategies; (2) the representation of power that focused more on displaying the negative sides of opponents have a higher chance of winning an election.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify types of politeness strategies andthen to describe the function of politeness strategies in Batak Karo language especially in Perbesi village, Tiga Binanga Sub-district, Tanah Karo Regency, North Sumatera province. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method theory by Lincoln and Guba (1985:424) and it is also strongly supported by Creswell (2014:171), the researcher uses Non Participant Observational Method (SBLC) to collecting the data. The data were analyzed by using referential method, the researcher also uses an informal and formal method to represent the results of the analysis.The result of the research reveals some findings showed that the Karonese families used four types of politeness strategies, there are: (1) Bald on Record Strategy, (2) Positive Politeness Strategy, (3) Negative Politeness Strategy, and (4) Off Record Strategy both interactions: Karonese families in North Sumatera Province, Tanah Karo Regency, Tiga Binanga sub district, especially at Perbesi village. Based on 28 data found in this research, the researcher found 19 data or 67.9% data used Positive Politeness Strategy, 4 data or 14.2% data used Negative Politeness Strategy, 3 data or 10.7% data used Bald on Record Strategy, and the last 2 data or 7.2% data used Off Record Strategy. The most dominant Politeness Strategies used in Karonese language at Perbesi village, Tiga Binanga Sub-district, Tanah Karo Regency, North Sumatera Province is Positive Politeness Strategies, with the percentage 67.9%, the types of politeness strategies proposed By Brown and Levinson theory (1987:101). The researcher found the most dominant functions of politeness strategies is Commisive functions of politeness strategy, with 11 data (39.3%). The Karonese used Commisive function strategy more than others functions. The second highest frequency is Directive function of politeness strategy, with 7 data (25%), the third is Representative function, with 6 data (21.4%) and then Expressive function of politeness, with 4 data (14.3%), there is no Declaration function that used by Karonese Families at the time. Therefore, based on the research, the researcher formulated the highest frequency of the politeness strategy in Batak Karo Language is achieved by the Commisive Function, the function of politeness proposed By Searle theory (1983:240).

Abstract

Syntactic Analysis Of Noun Phrase On The English Translation Of  Surah  Al-Mulk  (Tree Diagram) is a study that analyzes the forms and functions of noun phrases on The English Translation of Surah Al-Mulk (Tree Diagram) translated by Taqiud-din Al-hilali and Muhsin Khan. The objectives of this research are (1) to classify the forms of noun phrase on the English translation of Surah Al-Mulk; (2) to explainthefunctionsofnounphraseontheEnglishtranslationof Surah Al- Mulk. The writer used descriptive qualitative method because the research focuses on describing and exploring the forms and the functions of noun phrase on the English Translation of Surah Al-Mulk. In collecting the data, the writer used the theory of  non-participant observation technique and then used the theory of content analysis technique to analyze the data. In order to make easier the readers, the writer explains the forms of noun phrases with tables and abbreviation code of tree diagram based on syntax rule. The data were words that contain noun phrases. After the data were collected, the data were classified and explained based on Eastwood’s theory (1994), that proposed some forms and functions of noun phrases.The result of the study reveals some findings: The writer found nine forms of noun phrases are contained in 133 data, then in 133 data consist of 168 data which is in one datum there are more than one form of noun phrase. The writer found 62 data that form one word, then the writer found 48 data modified by the determiners, 30 data modified by prepositional phrases, 12 data modified by clauses, 6 data modified by an adjective, 5 data modified by a gerund, 2 data modified by a noun, 2 data modified by an adverb phrase, and 1 datum modified by past participle. Then, the writer found four functions of noun phrases from five functions based on Eastwood’s theory. The four functions are contained in 133 data which the writer found 61 noun phrases function as the subject, 35 noun phrases function as the object, 22 noun phrases function as the prepositional object, and 15 noun phrases function as the complement.  Therefore, the writer concluded that the dominant form of noun phrase found in the Surah Al-Mulk is a noun phrase be one word (N/Prop), then the dominant function of noun phrase found in the Surah Al-Mulk is as the subject

Abstract

This research analyzes the affixation used in Seloko Adat “Tunjuk Ajar” in Jambi Province, Merangin Regency, Tabir District, to be precise in Tanjung Ilir village. The aims of the research are: (1) to identify the type of affixation in Seloko Adat that used in “Tunjuk Ajar” in Tanjung Ilir Village, Tabir District, Merangin Regency, Jambi Province; (2) to describe the function of affixation in Seloko Adat that used in “Tunjuk Ajar” in Tanjung Ilir Village, Tabir District, Merangin Regency, Jambi Province.The method used is a qualitative descriptive method based on the theory of Bogdan and Taylor in Moleong (2003:3). Then the researcher used the theory by Plag (2003:107) and Lieber (2009:39 and is also supported by Richard's theory (1985:184) for the type and function of affixation in Seloko Adat that used in “Tunjuk Ajar”. The researcher uses Non-Participant Observation Technique (SBLC) method to collect the data. Then the data were analyzed using the Referential method, and using formal and informal techniques to present the results of the research.The source of the data was taken from the Jambi Malay customary law Tabir version, by Baihaki, Lubuk Bumbun Village. This research was conducted in Tanjung Ilir Village, Tabir District, Merangin Regency, Jambi Province. The data collected were analyzed based on the type of affixation, namely prefix, suffix, confix, infix, circumfix, but in Seloko Adat “Tunjuk Ajar” there are only three types such as prefix, suffix, and confix. Seloko Adat “Tunjuk Ajar” were calculated by percentage of kinds which are the most dominant form of affixation. Percentage of affixation in Seloko Adat “Tunjuk Ajar” has totally 46 data, namely the prefix 39 data (84.7%), the suffix 5 data (10.8%) and the confix 2 data (4.3%). prefix is the most dominant affixation among other affixes that is 39 data (84 %) in the traditional seloko "Tunjuk Ajar".

Abstract

This research analyzes about Linguistics Feature and kind of Genderlect Style, particularly focusing on language and gender different between men and women in Raya and The Last Dragon Movie. The purpose of this research is to analyze the form of linguistics feature and find out the kind of Genderlect Style used between men and women in language and gender based on Raya and The Last Dragon Movie. In this research, the writer uses a descriptive qualitative method, meanwhile for collecting the data used the non participant observational (SBLC). the data is formed in Pictures and conversation were also used to help the writer draw conclusions. In analyzing the data, the writer use data reduction and data display. The data codes in the form of word, phrase, and sentences spoken by the men and women characters.                        The result of the study reveals some finding: first, the writer analyzed nine forms of linguistic feature based on Robin Lakoff (1975) but through the analysis, the writer only found six of them out of linguistic form that existed in conversation between men and women are contained in 69 data. There are 33 data of Lexical Hedges and Fillers, 5 data of Tag Questions, 14 data of Super Polite Forms, 4 data of Adjectives, 2 data of Avoidance of strong swear words, 10 data of emphatic stress. The most dominant linguistics features is lexical hedges and fillers with total number 33 data. Second, the writer found five kinds of Genderlect Style based on Tannen (2012) theory. Those are private vs. public, telling story, listening, asking question, and conflict. Finally from five kinds of differences language use between men and women based on Tannen theory, all of the kind can be clearly proven. In this movie, dialogue/codes are dominated by women than man. In addition, the codes between men and women in one scene are limited.
