Abstract

The impact of the covid-19 pandemic is not only felt in the world of health but also has an effect on the world of education. This phenomenon makes teachers use a variety of online learning applications to meet cognitive, affective, and social in learning. The purpose of this study is to find out how English teachers manage online English learning. Various institutional and educational creativities use online media with different platforms to facilitate students. This research method uses a descriptive of qualitative research. With the object of research is teacher. The researcher used 2 instruments in collecting data. There are interview and questionnaire. The result this study of Teachers ‘managing English online as follow :(1) teachers manage English online learning using application such as WhatsApp group, google classroom, zoom meeting. (2) teachers give the rule in English online learning. (3) teachers prepare the material for learning (4) teachers make discussion with the student) based on data from interview (5) teacher give student the material early.

Abstract

The focus of this study is an attempt to figure out the peer teaching process inEnglish subject in pandemic situation at SMPN 4 Langsa. Peer teaching methodis a teaching method for delivering subject material with the peers’ help. In thisresearch, the researcher used phenomenology approach of qualitative research.The process of collecting data was done by applying the interview, observationand questionnaire. The questionnaires were conducted to 30 respondents from theeighth-grade students at SMPN 4 Langsa, while the interview and observationwere conducted to 4 respondents from the eighth grade students at SMPN 4Langsa who have the roles as peer tutor. Result showed that Peer teachingprocess began when the students have problems in learning English with theirEnglish teacher. It was revealed that the peer teaching showed a good implicationin order to get an effective learning process in English subject. the researchersuggested to the eighth-grade students at SMPN 4 langsa have to improve theirskill in English and realize their own learning method in order to increase andstimulate them in learning English in the teaching learning process.

Abstract

The focus of this study is an attempt to identify the students of English department problem in syllabifying English consonant cluster. Syllable is the smallest unit beyond single consonants and vowels. Syllabification refers to the division of a word into syllables. Meanwhile, consonant clusters are the combinations of consonant found at the beginning or end of words and syllables. In this research, the researcher used quantitative approach which the design is the descriptive design. The process of collecting data was done by applying the essay test. The test was conducted to 11 respondents from the English department students of IAIN Langsa. According to the result of the essay test, the researcher found that there were three aspects of the students of English department problem in syllabifying English consonant cluster, these were syllabification, consonant cluster and syllable components. There were 45,45 % of students who got mistakes in aspect syllabification and syllable components and 54,55 % of students who got mistakes in aspect syllabification, consonant cluster and syllable components. According to the result of the research, the researcher suggested to the English department students of IAIN langsa have to improve their learning strategy in order to help them in comprehending the syllabification and the syllable structure. In addition, the English department students should enrich their comprehension about syllabification, consonant cluster, syllable components and recognize each of them in the word.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine students' perceptions of online learning English at SMK Negeri 3 Karang Baru. This study used a qualitative method. The researcher used questionnaire as the instrument of research. In this study, the researcher found that many students did not agree with online learning. The material was difficult to understand, it was constrained by internet signals, so they preferred to study as usual. Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that students' perceptions of online learning English were negative, and they were not satisfied with online learning English.

Abstract

This study aims to explore English teacher’s teaching strategies to build students’ confidence to practice speaking English. Case study was used as research method with data collection techniques through classroom observation and interviews. The results of this study showed that the three teaching strategies (partner work, modeled talk, and story reenactment) had significant implications for students’ confidence to practice speaking English. This was reflected in various attitudes of students, namely students’ persistence and desire to practice speaking English, a high sense of optimism and learning motivation, students’ open-mindedness to receive positive feedbacks from teacher, mental and physical health state, students’ ability to adapt to subject matter in order to achieve learning objectives, as well as encouragement to become autonomous learners.

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to find out some translation errors from Bahasa Indonesia into English and to describe the causes of translation errors. This was a descriptive qualitative research that was conducted at IAIN Langsa. The object of the research was the students of English Department, IAIN Langsa who had taken the subject of Translation III. The total number of the object was 12 students. The researchers used documentation and questionnaire as the research instruments. The documentation was taken from the result of translation exam given by the lecturer. The documentation was used to find out the translation errors made by the students. The researchers also gave a closed questionnaire that consisted of 10 questions to the students. As the result, the researchers found that there were some errors in translating texts from Bahasa Indonesia into English. The causes of errors made by the students were that the students were difficult to translate texts from Bahasa Indonesia into English; most students did not know how to differentiate between literal and idiomatic translation; most students were not familiar with translation methods; most students did not master English vocabularies well; and the students felt difficult to choose the appropriate meaning of words that have various meaning.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the increase in students’ engagement in English language learning through the use of song lyrics. The study was conducted in a cycle of five sessions. The study design was a Classroom Action Research (CAR) of 35 XI MIPA 4 students at SMA Negeri 2 Tualang. The instruments of this study were observation sheets and interviews. From the findings, the researchers found an increase in students’ engagement, which was characterized by more enthusiasm in teaching and learning, like collecting more homework and being on time in online learning, asking more questions, and answering the teacher's questions. At the same time, the interview results indicated that several factors affecting the active participation in online classrooms were interesting media and easy song lyrics. The English teachers, referring to students’ perspectives, were able to improve students’ engagement and interest. To conclude, the teacher’s strategy in the use of song lyric is able to make students actively participated in the online classroom and make the teaching atmosphere more lively.

Abstract

This research is aimed at seeing how the English curriculum is implemented at Islamic Junior High School. This study employs a qualitative method: a case study. In collecting research data, observations, interviews, and document analysis become useful tools. This qualitative research used semi-structured interview questions and an observation checklist as the instruments, with an English teacher as the data source. One English teacher was involved in this study. In order to analyze the information gathered, the researchers used triangulated data. The information is then presented in a qualitative descriptive format. The findings show that while the concept of putting the 2013 curriculum into a document ; such as, syllabus and lesson plan has been well executed, teachers are having some difficulty putting it into practice in EFL classes. It could be indicated that the 2013 curriculum implementation in English subjects has been completed in written form, but the implementation in the teaching and learning process in the classroom has not been completed perfectly because the teacher is experiencing issues during the teaching and learning process and some of the challenges that an English teacher faces in implementing.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the students’ motivation in learning English with the use of storytelling. The research was categorized as descriptive qualitative research. The research was done in Junior High School YAPIS Merauke which focused on eighth grade in 2021. The sample was chosen by using cluster random sampling. The sample focused on VIII. A which consisted of 21 students. The data was taken through observation using an observation checklist and interview. The observation checklist included 20 statements and the interview included 8 questions related to motivation and storytelling. The result of observations and interviews showed that the students' motivation increased in learning English. For treatment step, students were motivated to ask and respond to the questions given. Thus, most students enjoy learning English through videos, students are interested in the teaching materials provided, and some students understand the material better by presenting using videos, concluding the material, and understanding by presenting the material through the zoom application. In addition, by telling stories, most students are more flexible in retelling the contents of the story and they are also motivated by using such a way.

Abstract

A linguistic study about Systemic Functional linguistics commonly analyzes the text in an article, journal, magazine, novel, or headline in a newspaper. However, the texts from a board game will be examined in this study. This study analyzed the mood system and sentence structure. The theories that Halliday and Matthiessen, 1992 on mood Analysis and the theory of Oshima and Hogue, 2007 are used to analyze the sentence structure. This study was qualitative research. The data are the text in every flash card in the “Speak It Up!” board game. The results of the study are, first, the declarative sentence was dominantly found in the study. Second, the results showed that the simple sentence was dominantly found. That means the language in every flash card is appropriate for children because the language is easy to understand.
