Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the theme of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the system thinking skills set out in the 2016-2018 National Science Examination Questions for Elementary Schools. This study uses qualitative research with content analysis methods presented through descriptive delivery techniques. The results of this study indicate that the average result of the highest percentage of ESD theme content on the 2016-2018 Elementary School National Science Examination questions is on biodiversity subject as many as 52.2%, while the average result is the highest percentage of systems thinking competency on the exam questions. 65.9% of the National Science Elementary School from 2016 to 2018 is in the ability to perform complex analysis because students are asked more questions on the plants and animals body parts shape and function; type of animal; ecosystem components; how living things conform; and natural resources. Also, students are given more questions in system component analysis.

Abstract

Scheduling can be seen in many areas such as chemical processing, logistic, supply chain, and class. In this study, two different cases of scheduling problems are addressed which are batch reactor process scheduling and University Class Scheduling (UCS) problems. The aim for the batch reactor process scheduling is to minimize the total discrepancies between the size of the assigned reactors and their corresponding assigned capacities or reactor sizes. The approach taken into consideration includes some constraints such as desired products, the production capacities, and the reactor capacities. Meanwhile, for the UCS problem, the concern is on the number of needed courses assign to certain classrooms while at the same time noting the constraints such as the size of the classroom and the number students. The UCS problem also seeks to optimize the distribution of courses remarkably to classrooms refers to the ratio of classroom capacity to course enrolment. These issues will be resolved using Integer Linear Programming (ILP) in the form of Excel-based software. The ILP model tool for both scheduling problems, therefore, is developed and resolved using the Excel solver utilizing Visual Basic Applications (VBA) and Macro.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyse the performance of the solar panels and batteries used to operate the water pump. The results will be used for the application of water pump energy sources in Sirnajaya village, Gununghalu district. The method used to analyse is experimental. The data of the voltage generated by the solar cell and the data of the batteries voltage are collected every hour for six days. Then collect the data of the duration for filling up the water container 500 litres. Results show that the solar panels generate the highest voltage at 12.00 with an average voltage of 19,1 VDC, at 13.00 with an average voltage of 19,1 VDC, and at 14.00 with an average voltage of 18,9 VDC. The result related to the batteries voltage when charging shows the highest voltage at 12.00 with an average voltage of 14,0 VDC, at 13.00 with an average voltage of 14,1 VDC, and 14.00 with an average voltage of 14,1 VDC. The duration for filling up the 500-litre water container takes 60 minutes. These results come because of the various intensity of the sun and the position of the sun against the solar panels which give an impact to the voltage value from the solar panels and the batteries. This study gives impacts on the application of solar panels for various uses.

Abstract

Principles of Chemical Engineering (PCE) course is a core and highly important subject to study Chemical Engineering program that caters most fundamental concepts that bridge science to engineering. This study assess the effectiveness of portfolio workbook as a strategy to enhance student active learning in PCE. It was implemented for a full-semester and the student feedbacks on perceptions and implementation of the method was obtained after the course was completed. Results show that most participant agreed on the imposing mark on the workbook to enhance their study motivation. Vast majority of the students (82%) admit that the workbook significantly helped them in mastering the subject, thus recommended the method for other subjects (85%). The workbook as well as the method implementation can further be improved by providing short-answer as well as more intense scaffolding.

Abstract

The advancement of civil engineering plays a major role in determining the nation's development. Generally, geotechnical engineering has a great influence as there is a building on the ground. The facts show that there are still many geotechnical problems that arise during the development process. One of the supporting factors in dealing with these problems is the development of research in the geotechnical sector in various fields. This research aims to determine the development of research related to Geotechnical Engineering through a bibliometric distribution map using the VOSviewer application. Data collection is gathered from the dimension site. The keyword used in this study is "geotechnical engineering" with the publication year of the 2017-2020 articles. This search was conducted on 23 October 2020 which resulted in 79,185 articles. The results show that the most productive writer in geotechnical research is Ronald Kerry Rowe. Moreover, China is the largest country in the field of geotechnical research so that many other countries have established cooperative relations with China. The journal that publishes the most articles on geotechnical engineering is the International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Science. As for keyword analysis, it produces bibliometric maps including network visualizations, overlay visualizations, and density visualizations. Four keywords often appear, namely "Displacement", "Strength", "Stress", and "Earthquake". Through the bibliometric approach, researchers can identify keywords on each topic or research that has been done before, it is, therefore, valuable in determining the novelty of the research that will be conducted in the future.

Abstract

T main purpose of this study is to find out the causes of the respondents’ reluctance to participate in classroom discussions among college students at Notre Dame of Tacurong College (NDTC), enrolled during the academic year 2016-2017. The descriptive method of research is employed to determine the causes of the respondents’ reluctance to participate in classroom discussions. The study is conducted at Notre Dame of Tacurong College (NDTC) with 273 respondents of whom 114 are males and 159 females coming from all courses and year levels. Convenient sampling is utilized to identify the individual respondents from each course included in the study. A researcher-made survey questionnaire that is formulated by the researcher after a review of literature and studies was used to gather data for this study. Statistical tools such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to treat the data. Findings disclose that out of 273 respondents, the majority (58.24%) are female against 41.76% male. As to course, most (18.32%) of the respondents are BSCrim students. As to year level, most (34.43%) of them are second-year students. As to the ethnicity of the respondents, most (47.99%) of them are Ilongos. Further findings show that generally, the investigated causes of students’ reluctance to participate in classroom discussions are moderately prevalent. The top three causes are being tensed when forced by teachers to answer a question; getting tensed and nervous to speak in front of the whole class, and having faulty pronunciation in English. Also, the most popular strategy used by students to participate in classroom discussions is to think carefully about what to communicate before they participate. Based on the major findings of the study, it can be concluded that there are moderately prevalent causes that hinder the participation of some students in the classroom. As a result, several recommendations are offered to academic leaders, teachers, counsellors and students to address the issues so students feel more capable, confident and comfortable to actively participate in their classroom discussions.

Abstract

This research aims to study and analyse the relationship between earthquake events and the disturbance of the ionosphere. The method for this research is to use the International GNSS Service (IGS) network to get Total Electron Content (TEC) in the ionosphere and then find the correlation between earthquake events and ionosphere characteristics. The result is correlated at 0.089, which shows the evidence of correlation on earthquake magnitudes and ionosphere. For future work, the researchers will study an impact on the development of an earthquake warning system.
