Abstract

This study is aimed to develop English reading materials for vocational school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). The subject of this research was Grade X students of Culinary Art Department of SMKN 1 Kisaran, Asahan, Sumatera Utaraconsisting of 25 students. The data consist of syllabus, lesson plan, syllabus and existing materials. Instrument of collecting data were questionnaires and interview which were used to collect information about students’ needs and learning needs. The evaluation of existing reading materials showed that the existing reading materials are not intended for students of Culinary Art Department. The existing reading materials are intended for all vocational students. After the students’ need and reading materials had been analyzed, the new reading material was developed that considering the students’ need and the relevant with culinary. The genre of the reading texts which were developed is descriptive text.The product was validated by an English teacher and an English lecturer with the mean score is 4.1 from 5. The product is categorized as “Good and Relevant” reading materials.

Abstract

This study focused on finding out the effect of applying RAP (Read, Ask,Paraphrase) Strategy on students’ reading comprehension in reading analyticalexposition text. This study was conducted in experimental design. The populationof this research was the second year of students in SMA Swasta Katolik BudiMurni 2 Medan. There were seventy students of the second year senior highschool students as the sample of the research. This study was conducted with tworandomized groups namely Experimental Group and Control Group. Theexperimental group was taught by applying RAP Strategy, while the control groupwas taught by applying conventional strategy. The instrument of collecting thedata was multiple choice tests which consisted of 25 items. The data wereanalyzed by using t-test formula. The calculation shown that t-observed (5.36)was higher than t-table (1.994) at the level of significance (α) 0.05 with the degreeof freedom (df) 68. It means that there was a significant effect of applying RAPStrategy on students’ reading comprehension in reading analytical exposition text.

Abstract

This study is purposed to find out the errors in translating narrative text based on Dulay‟s Surface Strategy taxonomy. In addition, this study is also aimed to describe the possible causes of those errors. This study applied the descriptive qualitative research which the data were obtained from the translation texts that were written by the second- year students of SMA Tunas Pelita Binjai. The data were collected by using the students‟ translation text. Then the data were analyzed by identifying the errors, describing the errors, and the last explaining the errors. The errors that occurred in students‟ translation texts are omission error, addition error, misformation error, and misordering error. The result of the research indicates that the students made 230 errors which classified into: 22,61% omission error, 11,30% addition error, 65,22% misformation error, and 0,87% misordering error. The most dominant error that occurred in the students‟ translation text is misformation errors and the causes of errors were influenced by the interlingual transfer and intralingual transfer.

Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to improve students’ speaking achievement in reporting procedure text by using video. It was a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subject was students of Grade X, senior high school ( sekolah menengah atas) Budisatrya Medan, which consisted of 35 students. The research was carried out in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments used to collect the data were speaking test as quantitative data and Observation sheet, Interview, Questionnaire, and Diary Notes as qualitative data. The results of the speaking tests showed that the students’ score improved in every test. The mean of the students’ score in Orientation test was 51.68, the mean of the students’ score in Cycle I was 65.28, and the mean in cycle II was 81.05. The mean score in cycle II was highest, so it can be said that the students’ speaking achievement improved from 51.68 to 81.05. Based on the Observation Sheet, Interview, Questionnaire, and Diary Notes, it was found that teaching- learning process ran well. The findings of study indicate that using Video significantly improved the students’ speaking achievement. So, English teachers are suggested to use Video in order to improve the students’ speaking achievement in reporting a procedure text.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out whether the English reading texts areappropriate or not in terms of the readability level for the tenth grade students ofSMK Negeri 1 Binjai. This study focuses on the readability level of Englishreading texts for grade X students of SMK Negeri 1 Binjai majoring in Bankingclass in the academic year 2015/2016. This study is categorized as descriptivequantitative research. The data of the study was seven reading texts from anEnglish textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris published by Kementerian Pendidikandan Kebudayaan in 2014 with various length and genres as the source of datatested to 30 students as the research sample. The instruments of the research wereFlesch-Kincaid Grade level and Cloze Procedure Test. For the Flesch-KincaidGrade Level Formula, the researcher counts the words, syllables, sentences, theaverage number of words per sentence and the average number of syllables perwords of the reading text to determine the level of readability of the English textsin students’ textbook. The cloze test was used to assess the difficulty in terms of areader’s understanding and response to the structure of the language of a text. Theresults of the study show that based on the cloze test result, the researcher gets theaverage score of 7 reading texts is 57.39% and based on the Flesch-Kincaid GradeLevel Formula the average score is 6 so it can be concluded that reading texts ofBahasa Inggris published by Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan in 2014are in the Independent level because the reading texts are readable andunderstandable to the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Binjai, and the textsare predicted to be quite easy. Therefore, the researcher takes a conclusion thatthis textbook is not appropriate to be used by the students at the tenth gradestudents of SMK Negeri 1 Binjai because they can read them by their own.

English EducationProgram, State University of Medan, 2020.This research was aimed to develop appropriate reading materials based on Problem BasedLearning for the eleventh-grade students of Computer Network Engineering program in SMKCinta Rakyat Pematang Siantar. This study was conducted by using the Research andDevelopment design through five phases, such as; a. gathering information and data, b; analyzingdata, c. designing new materials, d. validating by experts, and e. developing the final product. Thesubject of this study was the eleventh-grade computer network engineering students of SMKCinta Rakyat Pematang Siantar. The data were collected from the existing textbook, syllabus,interview with English teacher and distributing questionnaires for 25 students. Based on the needanalysis, it was concluded that the students were in need of appropriate reading materials whichare related to computer science, particularly in form of procedure texts. In response to thisinformation, some relevant and appropriate reading materials were developed, namely; a. How tostart Windows PowerShell, b. Installing Avast Antivirus, c. How to Create Ad-hoc Connection,and d. Troubleshooting Computer Problems. These developed procedure text have been revisedand validated by a team of experts which consisted of an English lecturer and an English teacherbefore acquiring the final product. The first expert evaluated the final product with a score of 4.12from the total of 5 points. The second expert evaluated the final product with a score of 4.03 fromthe total of 5 points. Based on the Likert scale, the final product is categorized as suitable withstudents‟ need. Therefore, the developed reading materials are considered appropriate for theeleventh-grade students of Computer Network Engineering program in SMK Cinta RakyatPematang Siantar.Keywords: Research and Development, Vocational School, English for Specific Purposes,Computer Network Engineering

Abstract

This study deals with improving students’ questioning achievement through picture word inductive model. The subject of the research was class X SMA Amir Hamzah Medan consisted of 22 students. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The instruments for collecting data were oral test for quantitative data and diary notes, interview, observation list, and questionnaire sheet for qualitative data. The result of the research showed that the mean of the students’ scores in the second cycle (80.63) was higher than in the first cycle (70.36). Based on the qualitative data, the students studies more enthusiastically during teaching learning process in the second cycle. It can be concluded that picture word inductive model could improve students’ questioning achievement.

Abstract

This study is aimed to develop English reading materials for vocational school.This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). Thesubject of this research was Grade X students of Light Vehicle EngineeringDepartment of SMK YPT Pangkalan Brandan consisting of 22 students. The dataconsist of syllabus, lesson plan, syllabus and existing materials. Instrument ofcollecting data were questionnaires and interview which were used to collectinformation about students’ needs and learning needs. The need analysis showedthat 81.8 % of students had difficult to understanding English reading text becausethe text is not relevant, difficult to understand the structure of word and sentencesin reading text and difficult to conclude the reading text. The evaluation ofexisting reading materials showed that the existing reading materials are notintended for students of Light Vehicle Engineering Department. The existingreading materials are intended for all vocational students. After the students’ needand reading materials had been analyzed, the new reading material was developedthat considering the students’ need and the relevant with vehicle. The genre of thereading texts which were developed is descriptive text. Based on basiccompetence, kinds of descriptive text which developed are describing people,tourism place, and historical building. The product of this study consists of fivechapters which titles are Soichiro Honda, Museum Angkut, Coventry TransportMuseum, TMII Transport Museum, and Cadillac Ranch. The product wasvalidated by an English teacher and an English lecturer with the mean score is 4.1from 5. The product is categorized as “Good and Relevant” reading materials.

Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate the student’s perceptions towards the use of Google Classroom. The research was conducted at SMAN 1 Aek Natas. The research was descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research was thirty-one students of SMAN 1 Aek Natas grade X have been using Google Classroom for teaching English. The results shows that Google Classroom is being helped for the students for study during this pandemic. Online learning can not completely replace conventional learning in the class but this system needs to be continuously developed for more effective learning.Keywords: Students' perceptions, Google Classroom, English teaching.

Abstract

This study focused on finding out the cohesiveness and finding out the dominant types of cohesion of descriptive in English textbook used in the tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 8. In this study, the researcher used qualitative research design. In this study, the source of data is the descriptive text found in English textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris” for grade X Senior High School published by Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia, 2017 written by Utamiwidiati, Zuliati Rohmah, and Furaidah.This study was conducted by finding out the coheviness and finding out the dominant types of cohesion of descriptive in English textbook used in the tenth grade students according to Miles &Huberman and Saldana (1994) technique. Miles &Huberman and Saldana elaborate several steps of analyzing data; they are data collection, data reduction, data display, and data verification/conclusion. The technique of collecting data of this study were collected through reading attentively and accurately the Textbook Entitled “Bahasa Inggris” for Grade X published by Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia from certain pages that have been chosen by the researcher as the samples. From the data, the researcher discovered 93 cohesions. From the 93 cohesions, the researcher reduced the data which contained only the grammatical and lexical cohesions. In finding out the dominant cohesion, the researcher discovered that the grammatical cohesion dominantly is conjunction. Meanwhile, for the lexical cohesion is collocation dominantly.Keywords: cohesion, descriptive text, English textbook
