Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the types of slang and the process of creating slang word found in a movie script entitled The Fast and The Furious by Rob Cohen. This study employed descriptive and qualitative method. The data of this study were obtained by watching and taking notes of slang word spoken by the characters in the movie “The Fast and The Furious”. There are two types of slang word, namely primary and secondary, using the theory by Chapman (2007), and in a matter of process of creating slang, the theory by Yule was adopted (1985). The data of this study were obtained by observation method through four steps, namely watching The Fast and The Furious. Next, finding and taking notes of slang words spoken by the characters in the movie The Fast and The Furious. Reading the online movie script and finally, the writer categorized the types of data. There were two types of slang words encountered, namely primary and secondary slang. The result of the study demonstrated that there are 5 slang words found in the movie The Fast and The Furious with 3 primary slang and 2 secondary slang.

Abstract

The film Friends with Benefits is the data source in this study. In collecting the data through library research by viewing films, reading scripts, and taking notes. In analyzing the data, the qualitative method is used and presented descriptively based on the theory adopted in this study. The theory used in this study is the theory of literature proposed by Wellek and Warren (1949) about characterization. The results of this study showed that only three characterization dimensions were analyzed. In presenting these dimensions, this study presents an overview and/or dialogue from the film. There are three dimensions of the characterization of the main character analyzed in this study: physiological, sociological, and psychological. These physical and psychological characteristics combine to build up Jamie Rellis and Dylan Harper, a romantic person in the film Friends with Benefits.

Abstract

This goal of this study is to describe the types of directive illocutionary act and to find out the most dominant directives speech act performed by the characters in The Complex: Lockdown movie through the theory of Speech Act by Kreidler (1998) and supported by the theory from Searle (1979). In analyzing the data, descriptive qualitative method is used. This study found 73 data of directive illocutionary act performed by the characters in the movie. In addition, it was found the most dominant directives used is command with 27 (37%) occurences followed by question with 23 (32%) occurences. Both types of directive is the most commonly used because the characters are forced to do a certain task quickly with a limited time to think. That causes they gave command to other and asked question frequently during the emergency situation after several bio-weapon attacks. The least dominant types of directive speech act are found namely; request with 16 (22%) occurences and followed by suggestion with 7 (9%) occurences.

Abstract

People speaking language differently, it can be influenced by some social factors. This research is intended to find out the kinds of speech style and the variables that influencing the characters of “Birds of Prey” in speaking a language. There are two aims of this study, those are: 1) To find out the kinds of speech style are used in “Birds of Prey” movie, 2) To find out the dominant style used by the character in “Birds of Prey” movie. This research is using descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data with the theory proposed by Joos (1967) to divine the style of speech style. The result of the data was presented in both formal and informal method in finding presentation. The formal method was applied through table and the informal method was applied through word explanation to explain which type of an utterance belongs to. The result of this study showed there are 266 utterances that categorized into type of speech style, there are 4 types of speech style that grouped into: 17 formal styles, 56 consultative styles, 180 casual style and 13 intimate styles with casual style as the dominant style to be used by the character according to the movie’s rating and genre.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to know the function of derivational affixes and to analyze the word structure of derivational affixes found in HighEnd Magazine. This study focused on the function and the word structure of affixes attached in each word found in HighEnd Magazine. The magazine entitled HighEnd Magazine is used as the data source. In this research the writer used observation method in collecting the data and qualitative method was used to analyze the data. The data were analyzed by using theory from Katamba (1993) and Carstairs and McCarthy (2002). The researcher used formal and informal method to present the result of the analysis. There are 302 words attached by derivational affixes found in HighEnd Magazine. There are two functions of derivational morpheme they are class changing morpheme and class maintaining morpheme.

Abstract

Machine translation (MT) offers great assistantship when people have difficulties in understanding or comprehend text of their non-native language both in spoken and written language. One kind of machine translation is Google Translation that can be got on their hand just by using mobile phone. This machine can help people to translate the text from one language to another one, in short time. This study aims at finding out the translation procedures found in the translation product by Google Translation and analyzing the errors occurred in Google Translation product. The data of this study are in the form of written data taken from a bilingual children story book of archipelago legend, which consists of 100 lines. There is a source language text in Bahasa Indonesia which is translated into English by using Google translation. The texts are chosen as it contains several sentences that are constructed by paying attention on the rhyme of ending sounds. The data of this study were analyzed through qualitative method. The translation results were analyzed based on translation procedures proposed by Vinay and Dalbernet (1989). Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that translation procedures used by Google Translation found in the data source are borrowing, calque, literal, transposition, modulation, equivalence, and adaptation. The most dominant type of translation procedure is literal translation. It has the highest frequency data; with a total of 50 data (50 %). Some errors are found in the result of Google translation. They are the errors in the use of pronoun, the use of plural and singular noun and inconsistency in the translation of name. Those errors are caused by limitation of machine in detecting the context of the text. Thus, the translated text is incoherent.

Abstract

The data source was taken from conversation among the characters in Mulan movie. The data was collected by using observation method based on library research. There were some steps in collecting the data. The qualitative method was the method that was used in analysing the data in this study. The conversation among the characters analysed in the category types of language function that was according to the book written by Blundell (1987) entitled Function in English. The data was presented by the formal method which presented the language function. The research finding showed that there are four type of Language Function: main function, social formula, making communication work and finding out about language. Based on the data, there are 33 data for main function, 15 data for social formulas and 2 data for making communication work. The study concluded that the most used language function was main function and the least used language function was finding out about language

Abstract

In this era, the news is a medium to share the information and some newspaper companies had already made the E-Paper. There are some problems discussed in this article such as the type of persuasive technique and its function used in The Jakarta Post daily e-paper and meaning consists in the persuasive technique. The collected data were analyzed by applying descriptive qualitative method. In the analysis, persuasive language technique and its function were comprehensively analyzed based on theory from Walton (2005) and the meaning used theory from Leech (1981). There were seven types of persuasive language techniques found in The Jakarta Post daily e-paper. The use of adjective is a persuasive language technique that is often used in The Jakarta Post’s news that published on 21st September 2020 until 25th November 2020.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of derivational affixes forming noun and the functions of derivational affixes forming noun in the novel entitled Firefly Lane written by Kristin Hannah. The methods used in this study are quantitative and qualitative methods. This study used observation method in collecting the data from all chapters in the novel Firefly Lane. Finally, this writing concludes that there were two functions of derivational affixes such are: class changing affixes and class maintaining affixes and each function has two types which are: prefixes and suffixes. The result of the study found there are 3 prefixes forming noun such are: re-, pre-,and pro-, and from suffixes there were found 22 suffixes forming noun, they are: -er, -hood, -ism, -ist, -ity, -ship, -ness, -th, -ize, -less, -ous, -y, -ful, -ive, -ing, -ance, -ence, -ant, -ion, -ment, - or, and –ure.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the problems in learning English Vocabulary especially in the eleventh-grade students of Harapan Senior High School Denpasar. In this study, the writer had 70 students of 11 social 2 and 11 social 3 at eleventh-grade students in Harapan Senior High School Denpasar. The writer gave a test to the participants. Since this study has purpose to know the students’ problem in learning vocabulary, the writer also interviewed 3 students who got lower score than other students to get rich description of the problems. The eleventh-grade students still have many difficulties in vocabulary learning. The categorization of the student problem is based on vocabulary learning aspects, such as pronunciation, spelling, word meaning and word use. The average score that the students got in pronunciation is 81,43%, in spelling is 59,71%, in word meaning is 71,02%, and in word use the students got 73,33%. So, the students still have problems in vocabulary. Furthermore, the problem can be caused by many factors, such as: hard to memorize many words, their motivation, or lack of experience in language learning.
