Abstract

The study aims to find out educational values and also how those values are reflected by the characters in the movie. The value of educational fosters us into adult individuals, individuals who are able to plan the future and make the right decisions in life. In this life of course having a noble character will look good in the community. The researcher used movie to analyse because when we watch movies, we not only get entertainment but we also get lessons or educational values tucked in the film. This study used theory of Linda and Eyre (1997) and theory of Klarer (1998). This study uses descriptive qualitative method. The result of this study indicated: (1.) Educational values found in Trolls movie (2016) are value of being consist of bravely, peacefulness, responsibility, honest. Values of giving consist of religious, tolerance/respect, social care, kind & friendly. (2.) Those values are reflected by the six characters in the movie. Value of being consists of three characters with six data, values of giving is consisting of four characters with four data. Those educational values were presented through conversation and action in the movie.

Abstract

This study aims to identify knowledge about literary studies, especially the intrinsic elements of a literary work, which is limited to the type of external conflict in Todd Philips' Joker movie. The formulation of the problem in this study are (1) How does the character resolve the conflict in the Joker movie. This study uses a quantitative and qualitative descriptive method to provide a clearer picture of the problem under study. The data from this study were taken using the observation method through four stages, namely watching the Joker movie. Then, find and record the type of external conflict spoken by the characters in Joker movie. Reading the Joker movie script and finally, the writer categorizes the analysis of the types of data findings based on the type of external conflict. There is only one type of external conflicts found, namely man against man. The types of external conflicts can be distinguished based on the data found. The results show that there are 3 types of external conflicts found in the Joker movie.

Abstract

This study concerns with the term of semiotics that is aimed at describing the verbal and visual signs as well as analyzing the functions and meaning of signs. The data of this study were taken from popular memes in 2020 on Pinterest or www.pinterest.com. The data were collected by observation method. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive qualitative method. Furthermore, the data were presented by formal and informal methods. There were three theories applied. The theory of semiotic was proposed by Saussure (1983), the theory of meaning was proposed by Barthes (1997). In addition, the theory of color was driven by Wierzbicka (1996). The result of this study showed that there were 6 verbal signs and 8 visual signs based on 3 data used in total. The visual signs are the most sign used on each meme. The purpose is to attract people on the internet when communicating with friends and shared for humorous purpose because it also conveys someone’s idea.

Abstract

This research focuses on “An Analysis of characterization in the movie Moana”. It aims to analyze the characterization of character in Moana movie. The data were taken from the characters in Moana movie and were analyzed to reveal what characterization used to describe the character and what types of character is found in the movie based on theory by Kenney (1966) and theory of characterization by Murphy (1972). The data source of this research was the movie “Moana”. The researcher collects the data using qualitative research method. Based on the result of the analysis, there are some characters that can be categorized into their characterization. The research concluded that there are three types of characters found in Moana movie such as main character, second character and supporting character. Moana being the main character, Maui is second character, and Villager, Heihei, Te Fiti, Tui, Sina, Gramma Tala and Tamatoa supporting characters. Besides that, to support this analysis about characterization there are nine methods of characterization such as personal description, character as seen by another, speech, past lives, conversation of others, reactions, direct comment, thought, and mannerism. But not all of the characters use all methods of characterization.

Abstract

Educational values are parts of life values that people can learn from many art works including films. The aim of this study is focused to analyze the types of educational values proposed of the “The Blind Side ” film. The analysis this research uses a qualitative method, This study applied the theory of Linda (1997). The educational values found in the “The Blind Side” film are honesty, courage, peace, ability, self-confidence and potential, self-discipline, pureness loyalty, trustworthiness, respect, love, compassion, sensitivity, unselfishness, kindness, and fairness. The result of this study showed that all types of educational values are found in the film “The Blind Side.” The most dominant of types of educational values in the film is Value of Being 7 (60%) data meanwhile, be the lowest dominant data is Value of giving with 5 (40%).

Abstract

Onomatopoeia is naming objects or action based on the imitation of sounds associated with the object or actions. There are two problems to be solved in this study, namely; (1) what types of onomatopoeic words are found in Justice League comic; (2) how does the context of situation help determine in Justice League Comic. This study used two theories to solve the problems, the first one is a theory proposed by Elizabeth (2013) to identify the types of onomatopoeia, and the second theory is from Halliday and Hasan (1989) used to analyze the context of the situation found in Justice League Comic. The data were collected through library research by reading the comic, identifying the onomatopoeic words, note-taking the onomatopoeic words, and this research used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data descriptively and qualitatively to support the explanation by presenting the percentage of the data in a table to show which one is the most present data found in Justice League. The result of this study shows the types of onomatopoeic. From 29 data found in the Justice League Comic by Daniel Kibblesmith, the types of onomatopoeic mechanical is most commonly occurs with 13 data or 44,8%.

Abstract

This research analyzes Ugly Love, a novel by Collen Hovers (2014). Ugly Love in is one of Collen Hovers novels that reflect the reality of life. This research focuses on the personality of Miles, as the main character in the novel. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative study. The aim of the study is to see the Miles personalities as the main character of Ugly Love. By examining the character dialog and quotes of the novel, and related issues on the topic. In order to achieve the goal if this study the researcher applied the theory of personality traits that purposed by McCrae and Costa (1992). Some characteristic that represent Mile’s character traits are: angry, nervous, jealous, panic, sensitive.

Abstract

Figurative language is way communication to convey the speaker’s through with meaningful sentences. The purpose of this study is to find the type of figurative language contained in the lyrics of Justin Bieber's song from Purpose Album. In analyzing the data qualitative and descriptive methods are used. The theory used in this research is Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) to analyze the types of figurative language. According to him there are ten types of figurative language such as: simile, personification, metaphor, synecdoche, allusion, dead metaphor, metonymy, hyperbole, paradox, and the last is irony. From the ten types of figurative language, there are six types found in Justin Bieber's songs in Purpose Album, there are: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, synecdoche, and metonymy. The most type used in this research is simile and hyperbole.

Abstract

Slang occurs in any language of a region especially when people communicate in informal situations. This study focuses on identifying the types of slang words used by Neel + Jordan on their conversation through a podcast. The data are taken from their podcast on Youtube entitled Australian Culture. This study was done in order to make the viewers of the podcast easier to understand the content. The method conducted is descriptive qualitative. Observation and note-taking techniques are used to collect the data. There are five types of slang as follows: fresh & creative, clipping, flippant, acronym, and imitative based on the theory used from Allan & Burridge (2006). The writer formed the data using a table and conducted a description afterwards in order to make the analysis clear and the readers easy to understand. The result of the study was that there were five types of slang found in the Neel + Jordan Podcast.

Abstract

This article investigates the Maxim Violation analysis employed by Emily, the main character in the movie. The data was taken from Emily in Paris Season 1 Movie. The goal of this research is to discover different types of maxim violations and figure out what motivates the main character to violate the maxim. The data was gathered using the observation approach, which contained steps such as downloading and observing the data, finding the script, and writing notes for the discussion that showed the violation of the maxim. The data were analyzed using a qualitative methodology. The study was comprehended using theory from Grice's maxim violation theory (1975). The results of the analysis of selected dialogue in the movie indicate that there are 28 data points in the film that include Maxim Violation. Quantity, quality, relevance, and manner can all be characterized as types of maxim violations. The reason that motivates the main character to violate the maxim was discovered in this film, which is supported by the context of the situation that occurs in Emily in Paris season 1 movie.
