Abstract

The level of reading comprehension questions in the textbook, particularly essay items, is thought to be important because previous research has shown that they can improve students' critical thinking skills in reading and help students learn English. The goal of this study was to look at the level of questions in an English course reading for high school seniors' reading comprehension questions. Anderson's taxonomy, which was used to analyze the level of reading comprehension questions, divides thinking skills into two categories: low order thinking skills (remembering, understanding, and applying) and high order thinking skills (remembering, understanding, and applying) (analyzing, evaluating, creating). The data were gathered and then calculated into percentages and frequencies that corresponded to each level of thinking within the questions. It appears that 77% of questions emphasize low-level questions, while 23% emphasize high-level questions (high order thinking skills). Furthermore, one of the low order thinking skills, comprehension, dominates the questions in the English reading material. As a result, the reading comprehension questions in the Bahasa Inggris English reading material for senior high school grade twelfth are generally classified as low level questions. As a result, teachers must devise questions that elicit students' higher order thinking skills.

Method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of the research are two lecturers of Department of English Education. The instrument consists of documentation of descriptive observation (by joining class group platform) and list of interviews on August 2021. In analyzing the data, the researcher observed the learning process through online platform, recorded the lecturer utterance, transcribed the recording, classified the data into kinds of code-switching used by the lecturer based on Romaine’s theory (1995), then calculated the percentage of each kind of code-switching. The researcher analyzed the factor why the lecturer used code-switching in teaching process based on the recording of interview and draw a conclusion by using Holme’s theory (1992). The result showed there are two types of code-switching used by the lecturer, namely inter-sentential switching (57,5%), intrasentential switching (42,5%), and there was not tag-switching. The data of interview showed the reason of lecturer used code-switching in teaching process because of the participant, setting or social context, topic, and function.

Covid-19 pandemic has changed the ways of teaching from face to face  to online learning. This study is intended to investigate strategies the teacher used, to know the  problems faced by the teacher in implementing strategies, and to know how the teacher solves  the problems in implementing strategies on teaching reading comprehension during the covid19 pandemic at junior high school. This descriptive qualitative research was conducted at SMP  2 Manyaran, Central Java. The subject is an English teacher. Observation and interview were  applied to collect the data. Miles and Huberman’s interactive model is used to analyze the data.  The results of this research show that the teacher applies five strategies to teach reading  comprehension during the pandemic covid-19 namely, strategy of identifying the purpose in  reading, skimming the text for main ideas, scanning the text for specific information, analyzing  vocabulary, and implementing L-R-D (Listen-Read-Discuss) strategy. The teacher encounters  several problems in implementing the strategies because the students fail to identify the purpose  of the text, face difficulty to skim the text and analyzing vocabulary. To overcome the problems,  the teacher makes several efforts such as giving more exercises and texts and conducting  discussions. The online learning during the covid-19 pandemic challenges the English teacher  to navigate the students to find the sources of learning using the technologies.
