Abstract

This article aims to examine how academics in the field of communication comprehend Islamic communication as represented within scientific publications, especially scientific journals. This study reports on how academics discuss Islamic communication within 227 articles published in Indonesian journals indexed by Garba Reference Digital (Garuda) for the 2016-2020 period. Using descriptive quantitative content analysis, this study states that most Islamic communication writings tend to position Islam as "an object", rather than as "a perspective". In this regard, Islamic communication is often put into the normative realm, regarding manners and rules of conduct when doing communication.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how Salafi da'wah TV, Surau TV, has utilised local wisdom for proselytising. Using a descriptive qualitative approach through field research, the findings illustrate that the local tradition-based Salafi da'wah represented in the Suluah Minang program presents a different face of puritan Islam. The Salafi group, which has been considered to understand Islam textually and reject local wisdom, turns out to consider the existence of local culture as long as it is not ad odd with the principle of monotheism (tauhid). According to audiences, although Surau TV promotes a Salafi perspective, they do not reject the teachings presented on Surau TV, the Suluah Minang program in particular. This is because the themes discussed in this da'wah program do not directly offend religious groups, but it only explains cultural phenomena that are considered to be conflict with religious values through the arguments of the Qur'an and sunnah.

Abstract

This article is a research report focusing on the construc–tion of Kompas and Republika's news coverage regarding gender-related issues such as polygamy, domestic violence, and early marriage. Zondhang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki's framing analysis was applied to analyse six news articles published by Kompas and Republika in 2021. The findings illustrate that both Kompas and Republika tend to construct gender discourse to mainstream gender equality in order to "break the chain" of violence and oppression of women. In regard to polygamy, Republika as an Islamic-based me–dia has framed polygamy as a behaviour that is not recommended in Islam by highlighting very strict sharia requirements while cons–tructing the news coverage of polygamy. Kompas as the represent–tation of the secular media has framed polygamy as behaviour that leads to destruction rather than constructive behaviour for society.

This paper examines deradicalization programs from the former terrorism prisoners’ narratives on Sofyan Tsauri’s YouTube channel. Through library research and data collection from digital sources using a phenomenological approach, this paper argues that Sofyan Tsauri becomes an influencer in combating radicalization through his YouTube channel which explains matters related to radicalism, extremism, terrorism, and peace that are likely to have resonance in various locations. Further, Sofyan Tsauri's move has become a vehicle for former terrorists to talk about terrorists from their perspective to overcome various barriers to knowledge hegemony. This article suggests that other terrorists and former convicts are expected to be able to replicate such methods of da'wah in the digital era that are friendly to millennials.
