Second, what are the uses of womens language features of Eilis Lacey in the Brooklyn movie script? In order to answer those two research questions, the researcher applied the theory of Lakoff (1975) on womens language. This research used a descriptive qualitative method that supported by quantitative method. The researcher described the data in sentences and tables and then counted the percentage shown in tables and diagrams. The researcher was the main instrument to collect the data needed. Abstract

One of the most prominent ways to shape children and adolescents’ mindset is through learning formally at school. EFL textbooks have an important role for students to learn English, but they will also unconsciously learn about gender stereotypes. These gender stereotypes include the belief that women’s role is limited to being a housewife, a good mother to her children, and an obedient woman for her husband. For men, their role is more to the wider part of society, which includes being a breadwinner and more successful in career. The object of this study is BSE English textbooks from grade X-XII. This paper will analyse sexist languages shown in the EFL textbooks using Mills (1995) theory and gender stereotypes using Arliss’ (1991) theory. This research is considered as descriptive qualitative research. The result shows that there are three types of sexist languages: fragmentation, presupposition and inference, and generic nouns. The second research formulation indicates that there are three gender stereotypes, namely stereotypes on traits, roles, and behavior.

Abstract

Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of The Red Death is a famous story of a plague in which the infected ones died with blood coming out from pores. Prince Prospero as ruler of that area ignores it but then was killed by a figure with a face full of blood covered in a mask. In the COVID-19 pandemic, the infected ones are quite seen as terror and disgust. People stay away from them as if they are dirty and sinful. It is similar to how Red Masque and Red Death are indicated in Poe’s story. However, Emmanuel Levinas argues that the epiphany of the face invites people to be ethical to others. Then, how is the epiphany of the face reflected in Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of The Red Death? By using the qualitative method, written data, concepts, and theories are asserted to answer that question. Comparing Levinas’ explanation, Poe’s story, and today’s pandemic situation could bring in better insight into how the infected ones should be treated better. They must not be excluded, but they need our ethical compassion in answering their presence to us.
