Abstract

There are difficulties faced by students in learning reading of the narrative text, such as difficulties to find details, translating new words, finding main ideas, and making inferences. This research was conducted to see the effect of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) on students reading comprehension of narrative text by applying ‘preview’ for brainstorming, ‘click and clunk’ for translating new words, ‘get the gist’ for finding details, and main ideas, and ‘wrap up’ for making inferences. It is a quasi-experimental research with experimental and control groups. The sample was the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Palangka Raya. XI MIPA 3 and XI MIPA 2 classes were the experimental and control groups, and each consists of 37 students. Reading comprehension tests were used to collect the data. Since the data were normally distributed, the hypotheses were tested by using the independent sample t-test. The hypothesis testing results show that the obtained sig (2-tailed) was 0.027 and smaller than the probability value of sig. 0.05 (Sig. 0.027 < Sig. 0.05). Therefore, Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. In other words, CSR significantly affects students’ reading comprehension of narrative text.

This study is intended to unravel how an EFL teacher working in a special needs school teaches her students. The central issues of this study are challenges and strategies employed by the teacher, government concern, readiness, and future expectations of the teacher. Narrative inquiry is carried out as the method of the study. This study involves a participant who has been teaching as an EFL teacher for special needs students for more than seven years. The in-depth narrative interview is conducted to collect the data. To ensure the trustworthiness of the results, the researcher confirms the interpretation of the data with the participant. From the story told by the participant, it is concluded that the biggest challenge faced by the teacher in teaching special needs students is growing their motivation. Thus, the teacher shall be wise in planning the lessons based on each students’ characteristics to enhance their learning motivation. Furthermore, in relation to the government, supports in forms of training and material availability have been given by the Indonesian government. In terms of readiness, most of the English teachers working with special needs students have limited knowledge and experiences at the initial stage of their careers. However, the teachers learn along the way through trials and errors and from a series of training provided to develop their professional skills. In the future, it is expected that the English pre-service teachers can be prepared to teach special needs students as a part of their training and education. Furthermore, the existing teachers are expected to continue learning from different media so that they can keep improving the quality of their teaching.

Abstract

Speaking is a common English skill which is still difficult to master in Indonesia. Especially in secondary school contexts, many students cannot use English for communication functions although they have studied it for several years. As the modern era demands the need of communication skills, this research was initiated to discover whether there is a correlation between self-efficacy and students’ speaking performance to help them improve their speaking skill. The study was conducted with a sample of 40 high school students from class XI MIPA 2 of SMAN 1 Palangka Raya. To collect the data, self-efficacy questionnaire, speaking test, and documentation of students’ latest speaking scores and teacher’s notes of students’ activeness in English class were used. The data then was calculated and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25 Program. It was found there was a weak correlation (r-count = 0.333) between the two variables. The level of students’ self-efficacy was moderate, but their level of speaking ability was high. Therefore, the study concluded self-efficacy has little or no direct effect on students’ speaking performance. It is suggested that English teachers can continue to improve students’ speaking skill and further research is conducted to find more evidence of this phenomenon.
