Abstract

Semantic is the study of meaning communication through language. Linguist who work in these branches of linguistics are interested in the ways in which words acquire meaning and the processes by which native users of a language are able to give stable interpretations to word strings. Problems of meaning are arguably among the most significant which addressers and addressees experience in communicating with the other. This is principally because of two things: first, the range of possible meanings of which many words are capable; and second, the considerable contextual features which influence how strings are interpreted. We are all aware, in everyday communication, just how much factors such as intonation, word stress, and situational context can affect the interpretation of utterances. In the other hand, phonology is defined about the speech on sound including intonation and stress. This paper describes that semantic and phonology have the correlation in analyzing the language communication. Keywords: Correlation, Semantic, and Phonology.

Abstract

Besides grammar, writing mechanics are one of important components for producing an effective piece of writing. This study has attempted to explain the types and the most frequent type of errors in writing mechanics found in essays produced by the second semester students of English Department of Universitas Airlangga year 2018/2019. Steps of Error Analysis explained in Gass and Selinker (2008) and the classification of errors by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982) were adopted in this study. The data were collected from 51 typed essays of division and classification written by the semester-two students. The study found in the essays 686 errors in three writing mechanics: punctuation (368), capitalization (291) and spelling (27). The errors belong to four types: addition (271), omission (269), misformation (139), and misordering (7). The two categories combined, the most frequent errors were in the addition of capitalization (211), followed by the omission of commas (160). The findings indicate that capitalization and punctuation become a writing problem for many student participants of this study. Therefore, the problem needs to be dealt with as writing mechanics help make the message in writing conveyed more clearly. Keywords: Error Analysis, essays, types of error, writing mechanics

Abstract

This paper highlights the importance of listening comprehension in learning English as a foreign language (EFL). The aim of this paper is two-fold: (1) to suggest use of listening-first approach  towards successful listening comprehension teaching; and (2) to propose a challenge of teaching listening strategies to help students acquire good competence in listening comprehension.  It cites significant research findings in second language acquisition and reviews the concept of listening comprehension and listening strategies and their relationship language teaching and learning. Research suggests that listening is prerequisite to other language skills, speaking, reading, and writing, and listening should be the primary skill to be acquired in learning a new language. There are major reasons for applying the listening-first approach. Listening comprehension sets a foundation for the future acquisition of speaking. Emphasis on aural comprehension training, and relaxation of the requirement for oral production in the initial phase of instruction, fosters development of linguistic competence, and produces better results than those obtained through intensive oral practice. Additionally, research also suggest that listening strategy is something teachable, so that it can be taught students in such a way that they will have opportunities to choose which suits their learning capability.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze cohesion and coherence in students’ narrative texts using critical discourse analysis approach and to identify the implications of applying critical discourse analysis approach to students’ narrative writing. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The object of this research is 6 narrative texts written by 2nd semester students of English Education Department of STKIP PGRI Bangkalan. Data collection is done through observation, questionnaires, interviews and documentation. The findings show that the students applied their narrative text writing tasks with grammatical cohesion, lexical cohesive, and coherence. Related to student assignment texts, most of them are good at writing cohesion and coherence and some of them need to be improved. In terms of writing, they are good at the reference, conjunction and reiteration or repetition. From student writings, the researcher got349 reference words collected, and 26 words from substitution, no ellipsis at all, 112 conjunction words collected, and the last 69 words lexical cohesive. They need to learn more about ellipsis and collocation, they are good at reiteration or repetition. About coherence they are good. most sentences are coherence but there is some to learn about coherence. Then, the implications of the critical discourse analysis approach model of Norman Fairclough are also very effective in analyzing a discourse or text because it can identify the content and intent of students’ narrative texts through three stages, namely the description stage, the interpretation stage and the explanation stage.

Abstract

In the first decade following reformasi, three main factors fostered the revival and re-signification of documentary film in Indonesia. First, there was resistance to the New Order’s repressive paradigm of censorship which was still imposed, particularly on issues such as sexuality, religion, and ethnicity. Second, there arose wider freedom for individuals to express their creativity due to the zeitgeist. Third, there was a coherence between the spirit of ‘make-your-own-film’ and the increasing popularity of the digital camera to produce independent films. Ayu Utami’s Jamu (2002) provides a subtle and yet excellent example of a documentary film from this period. It is a documentary that might have never had the opportunity to be made in the New Order regime. The film, set in Jakarta, represents the power of jamu - traditional herbal medicine - which pertains to sexuality and its myth. Using an unconventional expository mode, this film explores jamu as a socio-cultural artifact that forces issues relating to power and sexuality to be brought out into the open. I contend that the representation and symbolism of power and sexuality in the film is predicated on challenging the prevailing view that Indonesia is a moralized society as once constructed by the New Order regime. Therefore, the effect of Jamu can be perceived as twofold: a celebration of freedom of expression and the creative resistance to a hegemonic view of sexuality. My analysis is designed from a semiotic and cultural approach, concerning Roland Barthes’ photographic paradox, Michel Foucault’s power/knowledge, Jeffrey Weeks’s inclusive sexuality, as well as Robert Segal’s and Laurie Honko’s concepts of myth. Keywords: jamu, power, sexuality, and myth
