Abstract

The goal of this study was to learn more about the perception of love in “That I Did always Love” by Emily Dickinson and “Love after Love: by Derek Walcott. The research method used is the descriptive-qualitative method. Abrams theory becomes the main key in this research. The results of this research showed that the perception of Emily Dickinson about love in her poem “That I did always Love” that Life is nothing without love. She forces to have love and it must happen into her life. Because she desires to be loved, wanted, needed, missed, and prioritized by the man she wants. Where in real life she has never felt what love is. Therefore she seems so desperate to feel and get love. In contrast to Derek Walcott's perception of love in his poem “Love after Love”, he considers that there is no need to rush into looking for love; he wants all his readers to focus more on improving themselves and loving themselves and allowing true love to find them.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The United States is a continent full of immigrants. Immigrants are always related to identity issues and cultural adaptation due to diverse backgrounds. The life of immigrants is remarkably interesting to discuss, especially the problems they faced and the process of accepting their lives in the host country. Therefore, this paper will discuss the identity crisis experienced by the main character in pursuing the American dream in Girl in Translation. There are two objectives to be achieved in this study. The first objective is to find out the identity crisis experienced by the main character in Girl in Translation. The second objective is to find out how the main character overcomes the problems she faced. To achieve the objectives of the study, the writer will use mimetic theory as an approach. The method that will be used is qualitative method. Based on the analysis, it can be found that the main character experiences the identity crisis through language, dwelling, food, clothes, lifestyle, and moral. To overcome the identity crisis, the main character uses hybrid identity. The mixed identities make the main character become a Chinese-American. Keywords: main character; identity crisis; the American dream; Chinese immigrants; American culture.

Abstract

In this research I discuss about racism in Suburbicon film by George Clooney (2017). The reason I analyze racism are because I realize that racism does not start from the environment, but racism starts with the people themselves and we should know more about racism, including its definition, the history, the impact, the causes of racism and the struggle of black people who experienced racism. The main theory that I used is the extrinsic approach to Literature: Literature and Society. The method that I used is qualitative descriptive. The result found that racism benefits the perpetrators which are superior, but it harms the victims of racism which are the inferior because the victim suffers a loss in the form of mental and physical. The concept of racism is a concept that distinguishes one race from another and considers one race to be superior to other races. Racism can occur because of differences. In this thesis, I conclude that there are three factors that cause racism. The first is because of the stereotypes in society. The second is because of an incident that happened to the Gardner Lodge family. The third is because of a lack of understanding of the meaning of difference. In addition, there are also impacts and consequences of the occurrence of racism in the Suburbicon film. The first is inequality. The second is divided into two, namely from the side of the race that benefits and the race that is harmed. On the one hand, racism brings “advantages” to the ruling race but on the other hand racism causes invaluable “losses” both mentally and physically for the harmed race. Keywords: Racism, Representation, Literature, Society, Film

Abstract

The present study aims to find out how the use of sticky notes can help EFL students to improve their skills in reading narrative texts. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews taking a sample of 7 third-semester EFL students at an Indonesian higher education. Interview data in the form of implementation patterns of using sticky notes in narrative texts were explored to determine recommendations and produce research. The findings of this study from qualitative research indicate that provocative language and plots are major contributors to EFL students' difficulties in reading narrative texts. In addition, it also shows that EFL students use various reading comprehension strategies. Based on the results of this study, a new approach was found using sticky notes to read narrative texts. Most of the participants considered the use of sticky notes to be effective in improving reading skills. Although there were, several participants, stated that their use was less effective for reasons of time efficiency. The impact of this research is that a new method, namely sticky notes which are considered commonplace, can provide benefits in improving students' reading skills in English.

Abstract

This study is a linguistic analysis that discusses sentence patterns of syntactical fields of song lyrics “Say You Love Me” by Jessie Ware that uses trees diagram. Jessie Ware is an English singer, songwriter, and podcaster. The theories are used to find sentence patterns refer to transformational generative grammar (TGG) theory by Noam Chomsky, the theory of phrase structure from Goodman, and the tree diagram theory by Bornstein. The research method used is the descriptive qualitative method. The data source of this study is Jessie Ware’s song and to collect the data, the writer chooses “Say You Love Me” The result shows that there are 6 syntactical structures that are dominant in 18 lines, and there are 4 syntactical structures composed of different pattern constructions found in 5 lines in Jessie Ware’s song lyrics “Say You Love Me”. Data as follows. There are 6 categories of dominant syntactical structures which used in the three songs of Jessie Ware’s song lyrics namely (1) S ⇨ NP + VP in 5 lines, (2) S ⇨ VP + NP in 4 lines, (3) S ⇨ Conj + NP +VP in 4 lines, (4) S ⇨ Conj +VP + NP in 2 lines, (5) S ⇨ S + Conj + S in 2 lines, and (6) S ⇨ VP + Conj + NP in 1 line. There are 5 other syntactical structure categories also founded in these songs, namely (7) S ⇨ Conj +Adj P + VP in 1 line, (8) S ⇨ Conj + adj P + NP + VP in 1 line, (9) S ⇨ Adj P + NP + PP in 1 line, (10) S ⇨ Adv P + VP + NP in 2 lines. (7) S ⇨ Conj +Adj P +VP in 1 line, (8) S ⇨ Conj + Adj P + NP +VP in 1 lne, (9) S ⇨ Adj P + NP +PP in 1 line, (10) S ⇨ Adv P + VP +NP in 2 lines. From the result above, the writer suggests that this research could be continued by future writer or researcher and that it might be utilized as a resource for learning about syntax in the hopes that it will be interested to the reader. Keywords: Jessie Ware’s song lyrics, syntactical analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACTClass conflict occurs because of the relationship between one class and another. In this thesis, I analyze the class conflict that occurs in The Hunger Games the film by Gary Ross (2012). The class conflict that occurs in this film is the difference in social life between the upper and lower classes represented by the citizens of the Capitol and the Districts. In this thesis I emphasize on the existence of class distinctions that cause class conflicts. I used a qualitative descriptive method by analyzing scripts and scenes that contain the main topic in the film. I used theory about literature and film to prove that film is a literary work as well as literature and society theory as well as a mimetic approach as a literature approach. In relation to the main topic, I also used the theory about class conflicts. As a result of this analysis, I found that there is a class division between the Capitol and the Districts which is class conflict in both classes because of their interaction. I concluded that the problems that exist between these two classes depend on power and economy. Keywords: Class Conflict, Game, Film, Society, Literature.

Abstract

Reading is an active process that involves a person focusing on the reading text. It helps students improve their critical thinking skills and reading skills. The ability to read is needed in student learning today. By reading, students get a lot of information. Not only to retrieve information but also to learn grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Therefore, a method is needed to improve students’ reading skills, some of which are often used, such as the SQ3R method and critical reading. This study aims to determine the role of the SQ3R method and critical reading in improving students' reading skills. This study uses a qualitative method in the form of interviews conducted virtually through a communication application (WhatsApp) with students at an Indonesian higher education. The results of this study show that the SQ3R reading method is helpful for students in improving their reading skills and critical thinking.
