Abstract

Currently, the prevalence of degenerative diseases in Indonesia is increased. The degenerative and chronic diseases need life-long treatment as well as changes in life style. On the other hand, long-life treatment using drugs will develop risks of adverse drug reactions or the possibilities of drug-drug interactions. In these circumstances, the role of a pharmacist is important to providing drug information and counselling, and patient education. However, there is evidence that pharmaceutical care in almost all pharmacies (drug dispensaries) in Indonesia is still “drug-oriented”. Drug information is not adequate and is provided by pharmacy assistants (technicians). In order to implement pharmaceutical care practice that meets the “Standard Competence for Pharmacy Practice” as well as consumer’s expectation, we need to know what is the exactly consumer’s expect in pharmaceutical care, particularly in drug information, and how is the commitment of the pharmacists to provide drug information of degenerative and chronic diseases in pharmaceutical care. For those reasons, a field survey has been carried out in Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Makassar to explore the consumer/patient’s opinions and needs for pharmaceutical care. A focus group discussion has also been done to explore the pharmacist commitment to provide drug information in pharmaceutical care practice. As a result, there is an indication of a discrepancy between the consumer/patient’s need for drug information and the commitment of pharmacists to provide drug information. Consumers have need for more drug information for all aspects including adverse drug reactions, drug interaction, what to do if adverse reaction occurred, duration of any treatments etc., not only drug indication and administration. On the other hand, pharmacists still need more knowledge and continuing education, particularly in pharmacotherapy and pharmacology of drugs used for degenerative and chronic diseases.

Abstract

There is a plethora of evidence to suggest that host seeking in mosquitoes is medicated by infochemicals or semichemicals emanating from the host and visual clues that the mosquitoes recognize. The objectives of this research was to evaluate larvacidal and repellant effect of several herbal extracts that repell the mosquitoes. The result shown that ethanolic extract of Piper aduncum effective as larvacide for the first instar of Culex sp, while extract of Canangium odoratum repelled almost all of the female mosquitoes treated.

Abstract

Many type of starch from various plants can be exploited as an alternative for additional materials in tablet formulation. One of the source that have been developed as a pharmaceutical excipient is durian seed starch, which relatively easy to find in tropic area such as Indonesia. The objective of this research was to observe the ability of durio seed starch as binder in wet granulation of ketoprofen tablet formulation. Durio seed starch obtained by extraction and drying methode. Starch as a paste used in wet granulation as a binder. Tablet made by wet granulation with ketoprofen (25%) as a drug model; calcium phosphate dihidrate as a diluent; Avicel® PH 102 as a disintegrant; magnesium stearat (1%) and talc (2%) as a lubricant. Placebo formula with various durio seed starch concentration (5%, 6%, 8%, 10%) in tablet compared to other binder that is cassava starch. Placebo tablet formula with better hardness and friability used in ketoprofen tablet formula and compared to cassava starch as a binder with the same concentration. Formula with durio seed starch as binder have smaller hardness and more friable than cassava starch as a binder. Thereby tablet with durio seed starch as binder have faster disintegration time than tablet with cassava starch as a binder. The dissolution test for both ketoprofen formula did not meet the pharmacopeial requirements.

Abstract

The use of traditional medicine in Indonesia as the substitution and complementary of modern medicine for the treatment of disease may cause interactions to other therapeutic drugs in the body. This research was aimed to observe the effect of Morinda juice on theophyllin toxicity in white rats. This research was initiated by checking sample of Morinda juice including organoleptic, density and thin layer chromatography analysis. The effect of pre-treatment time of Morinda juice to theophyllin toxicity was done by taking randomized completely design using 60 male Sprague Dawley rats that were devided randomly into 5 groups. First group (control) was given 225 mg/kg BW theophyllin suspension, second to fourth groups were given 5.5 g/kg BW Morinda juice on 2, 6, 12, and 24 hours before treatment of theophyllin, then all were observed the toxic effect that appeared. The results of interaction effect have shown that the pre-treatment of Morinda juice which was given 2, 6, 12, and 24 hours before 225 mg/kg BW theophyllin increased number of rats death for 40, 60, 60, and 100%.

Abstract

The determination of triprolidine hydrochloride and pseudoephedrine hydrochloride in anti influenza tablet has been performed using derivative spectrophotometry method. Triprolidine hydrochloride and pseudoephedrine hydrochloride were determined by measuring the first derivative ratio amplitudes, at 227,6 nm (zero crossing for pseudoephedrine hydrochloride) and at 230,0 nm (zero crossing for triprolidine hydrochloride) respectively. The linear calibration graphs were obtained for 5-50 ppm of triprolidine hydrochloride and for 100-800 ppm of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride. The results showed that the method is rapid, simple and can be applied successfully to assay simultaneously of two components in tablet preparation.

Abstract

For most reason for dry suspension is the drug changes from chemical degradation or hydrolysis like ampicillin. The dry syrups that require mixing prior to administration is solving the problem. These suspension are commersial, dry mixtures that require the addition of water at the time of dispensing. Many antibiotics are formulated as dry syrups and are intented for a pediatric patient population. There are usually fewer suspending material in suspension dry syrup than in convensional suspensions. The criteria for selecting inggredients are based both on suitable reconstitution and on physical tipe of powder mixture desired. This research was carried out the possibility of using phycical and chemical modification of cassava starch as suspending material. First, pregelatinized cassava starch was made by heated the cassava starch with added amount water. Secondly, phosphorylated by adding phosphorous oxychloride for making cross-linked reaction and adding sodium monohydrogen phosphate (Na2HPO4) for making substituted reaction respectively. Both of the cassava starch phosphate derived was used in tree formulas dry syrup, as comparative suspending material was Na Alginate. Then dry syrup was evaluated accordance to Indonesian Farmacopea ed IV included sedimentation volume, redispersion, viscosity, flowing properties, pH, and ampicillin content after seven days. The result of evaluation were particle size 355-500 µm, flow rate 2,7-4,6 g/ det. Sedimention volume at temperature 27ºC during seven days for all formulas were 0,8-1,0, and redispertion 3-5 times. The viskosity of the suspensions were 58,6-357,1 cps .Flowing properties of the liquids were plastis -plastis tixotropic, pH 4,97-5,21, and ampicillin content between 93,12-99,00%.
