Abstract

Rural Students Barriers in Learning English during the COVID-19 Pandemic Research paper: this research describes the obstacles that students who reside in rural areas experience and how they overcome those obstacles. Ten students from the English Education Investigation Program were the subjects of this study. The author employed a qualitative technique and a case study design. The writer utilized an online questionnaire, interviews, and documents to collect data. The data findings revealed that practically all students faced social, institutional, dispositional, and epistemological difficulties. The data also indicated that students face nine obstacles, such as an unsupportive learning environment, a network difficulty, time management, a significant assignment, a cost, students' challenges in learning English, a learning style issue, and students lack of desire. They overcome such hurdles in various ways, depending on the individual. This study's findings will impact the teaching and learning processes. The professor is required to assist pupils in overcoming obstacles. The study also recommended that students pay more attention to the online learning experience. The study also contributes to the realm of language, and future researchers should pay close attention to this phenomenon.Keywords: Rural Students, Barriers, Online Learning, Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Online learning is implemented due to the Coronavirus Disease-19. This implementation is intended to avoid the spread of the virus. This study is qualitative research aimed at students’ perceptions and the effectiveness of using WhatsApp and Google Classroom to learn English throughout the pandemic era. This study consists of 37 students in SMP Negeri 1 Galur. All the participants are seventh-grade students. The participants are required to respond to all the statements written in the form of a questionnaire. The questionnaire is individually administered online using Google Forms. This study reveals that students found it helpful and effective in utilizing both applications even though there are some obstacles while utilizing the application. This study was conducted to find out the benefits and effectiveness of using technology in learning during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to discover there was a substantial effect of using comic strips on students’ vocabulary and reading comprehension in the tenth grade at SMK Lab Business School Kota Tangerang. The researcher used a quantitative method. In this study, pre-experimental research one-group pre-test post-test was used with 40 students as the sample, which was taken at non-random. The instruments for data collection were vocabulary and reading comprehension tests. The data distribution was not normal, so the researcher used Wilcoxon Signed Rank to analyze it. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test vocabulary and reading comprehension results of the above pre-test and post-test data were 0.000 less than 0.05. The mean score for the pre-test vocabulary was 58.12 and the mean score for the post-test vocabulary was 78.63. Meanwhile, the pre-test reading comprehension score was 58.12 and the post-test score was 78.63. It revealed a significant increase from the first to the second mean score. As a result, the findings of this study, which used comic strips to improve students’ vocabulary and reading comprehension in the tenth grade at SMK Lab Business School Kota Tangerang had a significant effect. This suggests that comic strips can be used as an alternative media in the process of teaching vocabulary and reading comprehension.Keywords: Comic Strip, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary

Abstract

The research aims to find out lexical and contextual meaning in the lyrics of Maroon 5 songs. This research chose five songs from Maroon 5; titled Maps, Leaving California, In Your Pocket, New Love, and Sugar. The research method used descriptive qualitative. The focus of this research is describing the context found lexical and contextual meaning theory by Mansoer Pateda to conduct this research. The step to obtain the data is collecting source of the data from Maroon 5 songs taken from the internet. After that, the writers select, read and listen the songs which contain lexical and contextual meaning the content of the songs. As a result of this research, it found 34 dates with lexical and contextual meanings. The result of this research is a complex romantic love story, or the bitter sweetness of a relationship of happiness, betrayal, struggle, and even loss.Keywords: semantic, lexical meaning, contextual meaning, songs, Maroon 5

Abstract

Cost and Benefit of Revenge: A Sociology of Literature Study on Sidney Sheldon’s Master of the Game. Revenge as old as the existence of organism in the earth. Revenge occurs as the act of getting even or to punish the wrongdoer. This study aims to reveal the particular issue regarding revenge as it written down in the novel Master of the Game by Sidney Sheldon. This study utilized the theory sociology of literature by Alan Swingewood. This study used descriptive qualitative method to unravel the impact if revenge toward the characters. This study showed that each characters undergone different acts of revenge based on the three types of revenge and it also revealed that the revenge cost more that benefitted the characters.Keywords: cost, benefit, revenge

Abstract

AbstractTeaching English Strategy for young learners. In teaching and learning, teacher must have strategies in every subject including English lessons, the teacher must have strategies in teaching to support the learning process and achieve learning goals especially for young learners because they have different characteristics from adults, she must have strategies suitable for young learners. This research aimed to find out the strategies of teaching English to young learners at MIN 2 Kutai Kartanegara. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The subject of this research is an English teacher at MIN 2 Kutai Kartanegara. The data were obtained from interviews and documentation. Then, the data were analyzed using an interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana condensation. The technique of data validity uses triangulation data. Based on the data results, this research can be concluded that the teacher’s strategies for teaching English to young learners at MIN 2 Kutai Kartanegara were teaching planning, implementation of strategy, and teaching Evaluation. The teacher prepares the lesson plan, materials, media, and methods in teaching planning. Moreover, she implemented teaching English strategies by using demonstration, choral drill, look-and-say, pictorial illustration, verbal illustration, association, question and answer, narration, and read-and-say. She also evaluated teaching English through formative and summative evaluation.Keywords: Teaching English, Strategy, Young Learners.
